Changes to function of Helix Looper in 2.82 firmware?
HonestOpinion replied to Cingaro's topic in Helix
Not sure whether Think I am seeing the same thing you are on firmware 2.82. This may be as designed even if it is not operating the same way as earlier firmware versions. Don't remember how this was working in earlier versions to be honest. Let me ask, are we talking about the 1Switch or 6Switch version of the looper here? I think the next paragraph describes the behavior in both. The looper's loop is not persistent if you stop it before leaving the preset. As long as you are in preset "A" for example, you can start and stop the loop to your heart's content. Leave preset "A" with it stopped and that loop is gone! You cannot restart it from the preset you switch to nor is it there when you return to preset "A". However, if you leave the loop playing when switching presets it is persistent. You can switch to another preset and it will still be playing, can be started and stopped from the preset you switched to, and will also be available when you return to the preset you started the loop in -- as long as it is playing when you switch back. I guess the overriding principle is switch away from any preset with your recorded loop stopped and you lose it; leave it playing while switching presets and you can control it(start/stop,undo, change 'Playback' volume parameter, etc.) across presets. Noticed another unrelated difference between the two loopers while I was testing this. Probably also as designed but maybe worth mentioning. I have my bottom row of switches set to stomp and the top row to snapshots. When I use the 1Switch looper and hit my bank switch it retains my snap/stomp setting for the top and bottom row of switches. However, when I engage the 6Switch looper while it is playing, if I hit my bank switch, both rows of switches, top and bottom, display presets. I don't think this is a bug, more how engaging the 6Switch looper interacts with the different modes activated by the Mode switch. Probably due to the fact that there is that extra switch click required when you select the 6Switch looper to bring up the six looper switches; unlike the 1Switch looper which engages immediately when you select it. Behavior may vary depending on your global settings. -
Why isn't the Helix displaying the PowerCab+ IR names?

Well apparently you can't send MIDI via L6 Link right now and maybe ever but I love it as an Ideascale entry. Of course it would have to be enabled in both of the devices on either end of the link. :-) -

Was not aware of that. Thanks! Excellent piece of general information. The fact still remains unfortunately that what could be a simple menu driven process from the Helix would still remain a tedious MIDI programming task requiring manual lookup of preset names with no visual feedback as MIDI does not provide any indication of the PC+ preset name on the Helix. Good to know that option is there though. I still hope Line6 changes their decision and includes preset changes along with displaying the presets names. Also the PC+ IR names definitely should be displayed on the Helix. Would really make the Powercab+ a home run. -

Good point but it just seems like it would be a shame to have to have both L6 Link and MIDI hooked up to get basic functionality that should be happening through just the L6 Link. -
I have the Headrush 108 and it sounds great with the Helix. Personally I would probably never use anything like it for a paid performance although I suppose you could, particularly in a small venue or doing a singer-songwriter type of thing. It is however unbelievably small and light and very inexpensive so it is ideal for practice, and grab&go jams, maybe even small gigs. The 112 would probably make you happier if you gig regularly but costs a bit more and is heavier and larger, although not egregiously so. You get a bigger speaker with more bottom end and maybe more capacity to get over a loud drummer. As other have stated though even the 108 has 2,000 watts peak. Either one can get loud. I would make the selection based on cost, what you intend to use it for, weight and size considerations, and which one sounds better to you.

Voted! Agree with phil_m that the snapshots approach is easiest but if you need it I posted a preset/template up a while ago(link below) that allows you to use a footswitch to activate the Helix's onboard expression pedal in stomp mode. This method using a foot-switch instead of a toe-switch retains for example the volume setting on the expression pedal when you switch rather than maxing out as it does when you use the toe-switch. If you want to set it up yourself you can use the included instructions or you can use the preset and modify it for your own use. The link in the preset description helps if you need to edit it. As kevin627 said you do need to connect a MIDI cable from the Helix' MIDI in to MIDI out. https://line6.com/support/topic/45297-how-to-resolve-volume-and-wah-expression-pedal-conflict/?do=findComment&comment=293774

Why isn't the Helix displaying the PowerCab+ IR names?
HonestOpinion replied to HonestOpinion's topic in Helix
I can see where the way I put that might have been a little confusing or appeared contradictory. I was just trying to express that I am not having any issue that I am aware of getting the PC+ and the Helix to communicate with each other properly. At least to the extent they are capable of presently Just that the way they do it right now is still difficult to navigate when some of the requisite data, e.g. PC+ IR names, is not being populated on the Helix. I thought all of that would have been remedied in the latest update enabling L6 Link communication. The L6 Link communication is two-way. Very cool! Settings on the Helix do change when you manually modify a setting on the PC+ and vice versa. That along with phil_m's comment above tells me that there is at least the possibility that more information could be communicated from the PC+ to the Helix to truly enable elegant and comprehensive remote functionality. It would require at a minimum that the IR names be displayed though, at least in HX Edit if not the Helix, and adding the ability to change PC+ presets would be very desirable but not critical. Either one of these capabilities would suffice to vastly enhance interoperability between the two. Both would be ideal, at least from the view in the cheap seats. -
Why isn't the Helix displaying the PowerCab+ IR names?
HonestOpinion replied to HonestOpinion's topic in Helix
For one thing, if you could select PC+ presets you wouldn't have to use some kludgy method for looking up IR numbers. :-) I have seen this rationale batted around and it has some merit but ultimately makes no sense to me. It's fantastic that the capability to dial in all the PC+ parameters(except sadly presets, and obscured IRs) from the Helix is there at all(that's the merit part). But why force the user to dial them up every time in each Helix preset/snapshot? Isn't that the whole point of a preset, any preset? Find the combination of settings you like and save it for easy retrieval. The Helix and HX Edit are ideal tools for remotely setting the PC+. They offer one place to potentially comprehensively dial in everything in your signal chain from the Helix to its final delivery by the PC+. That goes to the heart of the brilliance of providing L6 Link connectivity from the Helix to the PC+. I would rather not get embroiled in the religious debate as to whether or not PC+ preset selection should be allowed from the Helix (I believe it should); it seems self-evident to me. Let's put that aside for the moment though. As always there may be sound technical reasons for not doing it that have not been disclosed. It is the cumulative effect of not allowing PC+ preset changes and also not displaying IR names that is hamstringing the current PC+ remote control implementation on the Helix and making it more difficult than it needs to be. It was literally the first thing I noticed when I hooked up my new PC+. It was only after determining to my chagrin, wow, they really did do it this way, that I began to enjoy what an awesome cab they had developed. Hardly even seems worthy of debate, there is clearly a better way to do remote connectivity between the PC+ and Helix and Line6 excels at innovative and intuitive UI implementations. IMHO they are really close but not quite yet up to their usual standards for the remote connectivity here..... but it easily could be and hopefully will. -
Why isn't the Helix displaying the PowerCab+ IR names?
HonestOpinion replied to HonestOpinion's topic in Helix
Not having any problems technically switching things on the PC+ from the Helix. The PC+ is a brilliant piece of kit, but the "ecosystem" connectivity using L6 Link between it and the Helix is just not there yet and I wonder if it ever will be. I love that they gave comprehensive control over many of the PC+ parameters on the Helix but to leave out the ability to change presets and then on top of that to have us requiring spreadsheets listing the IRs, doing lookups in Powercab Edit, or alternately having to scroll manually through the PC+ for IR names, and then go back to the Helix or HX Edit to program them is a disappointing implementation. The lack of ability in the Helix interface to either list IR names or allow presets to be changed from the PC+ seem related to me. They both would involve either populating some kind of list(array?) on the Helix that had the preset names and IR names from the PC+, or alternately a dynamic connection that retrieved the preset or IR name as you scrolled through them from the Helix. Additionally, unless it is a rumor, I have seen it posted that DI has announced that you will never be able to select PC+ presets from the Helix. This indicates to me that there is at least currently some technical obstruction to this because I can see no practical reason for this basic remote interoperability to have been left out. With a 128 possible IRs selecting them by number only is just impractical. Reminds me of the bad old days before equipment started having alphanumeric screens of adequate length. Everything was limited to two or three digit displays. Modelers and other equipment required a paper cheat sheet because it was impossible to remember what was in more than a few presets as all they had in the display was a number. Hang on, let me comb my mullet before I program this thing, grin. The user community should encourage Line6 to go the last mile and link the PC+ and Helix up properly. There is enormous potential there, it is just not fully realized yet. If I have to use a spreadsheet to program the PC+ from the Helix I will, and I am certainly happy to see any connectivity at all between the two but a couple of basic tweaks would take this ecosystem over the finish line. I hope they can improve things in an upcoming firmware version. -
Know I'm late to the party but I just received my PowerCab+. Upgraded the firmware to the latest(2.00.1) and I am on HX Edit 2.82, firmware 2.82. connected by Helix via L6 Link. When you scroll through the IRs on a Helix IR block the names of the IRs are displayed. This does not seem to be the case with the IRs stored on the PC+. All I can see on the Helix or in HX Edit is the numbers of the IRs on the PC+. Not very useful having a mystery number and no IR name when you are trying to select an IR. Is this the current state of affairs or is there a way to show PC+ IR names on the Helix? If not that really throws a monkey wrench into using the Helix to select the IR on the PC+. Are people keeping a spreadsheet with slot numbers and names of the IRs on their PC+, or maybe checking the screen on the PC+ for the IR name and number and flipping back to the Helix to select it? Also, I know there has been much discussion regarding it but I don't even begin to comprehend why you can't select PC+ presets from the Helix via L6 Link. Seems like the first feature you would want when controlling the PC+ remotely. I bring it up because seeing as you can't switch PC+ presets from the Helix, making the IR names visible from the Helix becomes even more essential to a one-stop selection of the PC+ setting from the Helix. Otherwise there is a whole lot of manual cross-referencing going on. Maybe I don't have some option set properly but if that is the case I can't find it.

Do you have your presets backed up individually or just setlists? If you do you could restore just the ones you want. Probably aware but presets can be backed up individually by highlighting all of them at once and hitting 'Export'. When you copy/pasted on top of the newly blank preset did you copy in a preset that was working properly elsewhere? In other words will no preset load properly in that position; even one you know works correctly in another slot? Can you successfully create one from scratch in those positions after you used the FS 11&12 reset to delete the corrupt preset? Seems like you have a few options now: If the preset slots that were glitching are acting right after the global delete/reset procedure you could just not load the corrupt presets and leave things as they are. If those preset slots are still acting up with no preset loaded after the reset/delete process. Try a full global reset and restore. Or, if all else fails as a last resort completely uninstall, reinstall HX Edit, update firmware, run global reset and then restore from backup. Good luck with this, sounds like one of your setlists got corrupted but you never know. When something goes wrong with the firmware update or HX Edit install there's definitely a fair share of people who report preset issues. Also sometimes you may have a setlist that does not load properly but selecting and restoring the setlist from a "Restore From Backup" works just fine.

First impressions after upgrading to Helix from POD HD
HonestOpinion replied to dflorey's topic in Helix
I also do not like that they put the Legacy effects into a separate category. Should have mixed them in with their corresponding category just like all the other ones and differentiated them with an alternate font or color or whatever. When I audition different overdrive pedals or delays for example I prefer to have them all in one place. Having to jump out to a separate directory for the Legacy effects makes no sense to me although at the time maybe it was quicker and easier for them to program them that way. I think a lot of people would use them more if Line6 mixed them in to their respective categories(distortion, modulation, delay, etc.) with the rest of the effects. Don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth 'cos it was amazing that they added them but I hope they decide to change this at some point. Actually put this one in Ideascale a while ago, vote it up: https://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Move-Legacy-Effects-in-with-the-rest-and-make-em-look-different/921132-23508 -
How do you import 3rd party IR's to the powercab plus?
HonestOpinion replied to wizardman's topic in Powercab
Thanks for trying! Disappointing and surprising that doesn't work. Maybe a third party convertor is going to prove to be the way to go until and if Line6 widens the breadth of IRs it can import on the PC+. Don't think the exported IR is a non-truncated version though, more likely truncated and potentially format modified, at least from stereo to mono, depending on what was originally imported. Who knows what goes on behind the curtain though. I've actually been curious for a while about what exactly the Helix exports in its IR files as I wondered if it was better to load the original IRs or the backups. Probably doesn't make a difference unless the Helix converts its IR backups again when they are loaded and makes each iteration of load slightly more different from the original. Seems unlikely. -
Have to say, and you may/probably already have tried this but if I were seeing that kind of behavior I would first try to delete the preset using the FS 11&12 global reset option. That option deletes the current preset. Make sure you have the preset you want to delete selected before you do this. If you can't get rid of them that way or you have a lot more presets that are acting up I would do the backups in step#1, do a complete global reset, and then restore from backup. I would probably do that anyway just as a preventive measure. If that didn't work I would do the following. Do a create backup, backup all my setlists, and backup my presets individually. Uninstall the Helix software, and reinstall, making sure my firmware matched my HX Edit version. Do the the global reset described in the firmware update instructions. Restore from backup. https://helixhelp.com/manuals/helix/reset-options.html#helix-floor-lt As always get some backups before you start mucking with anything.

I got the same impression. Although it is more specialized, particularly the EQ, to a lesser extent an acoustic guitar amp (Fishman), like a keyboard amp, can act as an FRFR. Would not be my first choice for electric guitar but I see no reason it can't be employed with a modeler for electric and acoustic depending on what you are playing.
-
Have to agree and talented as Pat Thrall may have been, for me Traver's best albums were "Life In London" and "Makin' Magic". "Heat In The Streets" and the stuff that followed was more like the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen, as in just not as good as the stuff that preceded him. I preferred the early years and pretty much stopped listening to him after those albums. Just my opinion and probably reflects which Travers albums I heard first more than any objective measure. The later stuff started to sound more pop and less rock to me.

Dog lover myself but pretty much like most animals, even some of the two legged ones. But yeah, the psycho who came up with that could just as easily have said "more than one way to feed a cat" or "skin an orange". But I digress. Saw the earlier posts, it just seemed like the slightly more exotic solutions were being batted around without the meat and potatoes one getting much attention.
-
'Life In London' off Pat Traver's "Putting It Straight". Great album!
-
Pretty much what hideout said, what am I missing here. Looks like you essentially want a 4CM setup. Why not just go 4CM into the Fishman from the Helix, with the electric guitar in the Helix's 'Guitar In' and the acoustic in the Helix's 'Aux In'. If you don't want to use the Helix's 'Aux In' for your acoustic guitar you could use one of the Helix returns.
-
Btw, the latest version of HX Edit and the firmware is 2.82, you list 2.8. Don't know if that could have anything to do with it but probably worth upgrading your Editor and firmware versions on the LT anyway.
-
Don't have one so this could be erroneous but did you also use the Line6 Updater to update your firmware on the Powercab to the latest version?
-
Maybe retaining the settings would be a nice option but I stopped using amp+Cab blocks almost immediately when I started using the Helix. Using separate amp and cab blocks provides more flexibility and makes it much easier to swap cabs for IRs or vice-versa. Makes alternate routings easier too. For example all three channels of an amp's blocks(e.g. clean, crunch, lead) loaded up and routed through a single cab. Maybe I'm missing something but I never use the amp+cab blocks any more. I don't see any advantage to not using separate blocks. Hard to run out of available blocks on the Helix.
-
My PC+ is still on its way. I think what johnfrancis was commenting on was that changing the speaker model from the Helix did not display the selected model on the PC+. Are you saying there is a way to set the PC+(press selector knob) so that it will display the speaker model when the Helix changes it without requiring a button press? If so that works for me.
-
It really comes down to how well the mix is handled and the ability of the speaker(s), or Powercab in this case, to handle it. A standard PA/mixing console mixes an entire band, guitars, bass, drums, etc., often to only two speakers at FOH in mono. That works pretty well so mixing two guitars to one speaker can be made to work nicely. With that said my experience with putting two guitars through the same amp has usually yielded less than stellar results. Don't know whether it is phase inversion, lack of two truly separate channels, physical differences between guitar and PA speakers, or what, but many/most guitar amps just don't handle two guitars well. Have no idea how the PC+ would fare. Might be fine, might not. Even if it sounds good it makes it more difficult to monitor your own guitar when both guitarists are coming out of the same speaker. But hey, for casual jamming why not give it a try. For me, I think sharing is a fine thing but don't know if I would want another guitarist cranking their own MFX through my PC+ while I was using it. Maybe after I've had it for a few years. :-)
