  1. Get in touch with support. They may have more ideas, and in any case, they should know this is happening to someone. Good luck :)
  2. Reasonable things I haven't had a chance to try, and there are others. I just wanted to play guitar and check out the New Stuff, not do a Scientific Experiment. I do enough narrowing down of inexplicable behaviors at work... We'll see...
  3. It appears that if I'm on this one particular preset, a modified version of the factory Trainwreck patch, go to the previous preset and back using the footswitches, then hit the Amp button, my Helix locks up. It still processes audio, but the whole UI becomes unresponsive, footswitches too, and it loses contact with the editor. Happens every time I do that sequence of actions. Only way out that I've found is to reboot it. I've had that happen before several times, on several other firmware version, but not a lot, and I never had a repeatable set of actions like this to cause it. I tried the same thing with a different pair of patches, no problem. Odd, to say the least.

    EP boost

I thought the MicroAmp was just a clean boost, with a possible impedance buffering effect, depending on your guitar electronics, cables, and other pedals in your chain. Don't think it does anything mystical.

    Steel Guitar?

IME that's way more in the playing than the amp. Pedal steel is usually just a really clean amp, often with a fair bit of reverb. Clips of what you're after?
  6. Pretty sure mine was a new patch, very likely 2.21, but I guess I'm not 1,000% certain.
  7. I updated from 2.21 to 2.30 today, did NOT restore the factory setlists from my pre-update backup, and I still don't have any new factory presets I can find. I think you may have to back up, do the "Reset setlists to factory, Keep IRs" thing, then restore everything except the factory setlists from you backup. Did anyone actually get new presets without doing that? Are both factory banks new?
  8. Thanks for doing that, good test. Not exhaustive, as you point out, but a good ballpark baseline.

    IR Question

I think the conversions process truncates at 2048 samples, all of which gets used if you use a 2048-sample IR block. If you use a 1024-sample block, I don't the the IR itself is changed for later use, it's just that the block itself throws away the second half. I've never heard any difference between 1024 and 2048 in Helix myself.
  10. Full backup, restored everything but the factory setlists. (Which doesn't turn out to matter, still don't have new factory stuff. Seems like the upgrade leaves your preset like they were, factory and all, and you have to manually reset them, then restore yours from backups. Which is fine, just not mentioned or clear.)
  11. Yeah, I know how it works, and set the LEDs how I want them. I'll check further when I get a chance.
  12. Not the same thing. LEDs were just backwards, not matter how many times I hit the switch.
  13. Upgrade went wonderfully smoothly, good job Line 6! However, the LED state for many of my stomp switches that control more than one block is backwards. For instance, I was just fixing a preset that has a switch labeled Delay, turns a delay on and reverb off. Before the update, its LED was on when the delay was, like makes sense for a switch labeled Delay. After the update, it's the other way around, off when the delay is on. It's easy enough to fix, but I have a bunch of presets with footswitches set up like that, and a lot of them, maybe all, are wrong now. That one preset has three. Have other folks seen this? Is it just a upgrade thing, or do the new full backups not capture or not restore that correctly?
  14. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, sorted. Even my mom knew that :)
  15. What I don't get about Cartographer is how Ben could have used even a tiny fraction of what it can do live. There are so many possibilities to all its controls, without presets, or at least like 3-4 channels, you'd either be using only a couple of its tricks, or adjusting it all night. Yay modeling!
  16. Dr Bonkers has a 12" Polytone cab IR, on sale now too. Worth a try, though it's not the whole amp.
  17. I've been playing for over 50 years, a good hunk of that professionally, and still haven't played real-world versions of the vast majority of amps, cabs, pedals, or fx in Helix. Guess I'll just have to get by without all that background and common sense that makes these choices so obvious :) Seriously though, for me the ability to try all this stuff for free (built-in) or relatively inexpensively (third-party IRs), and without the racket, inconvenience, and spotty stock of an actual music store is great. I'm fine putting in some time to try stuff. I've always done that, rewiring my amps and guitars, hooking stuff up however, etc., just now I get to do it so much more cheaply and easily. When I shoe-horned a pair of JBL 15s into an old-style small Bassman cab back in high school, it was a big deal; if I hadn't liked it it would have been an expensive PITA boondoggle. Today, if I don't like that Uberkab, so what? At least I got to try it and find that out.

    New Presets?

Yes, but it doesn't install any new factory presets. I was describing how to do that.

    New Presets?

I think the upgrade doesn't blindly overwrite ANY presets, since it doesn't know what you care about or have modified. There are switch combinations to hold on startup that will restore the factory presets. The info I have WHICH MAY BE OUT OF DATE BY NOW, is this: 7 & 8 Reset setlists to factory, Keep IRs 8 & 9 Reset setlists to factory, Clear IRs 9 & 10 Reset setlists to factory, Global reset, Clear IRs We used to have to do that after an upgrade, then restore our backups, so we got any new factory presets, but the new streamlined deal no longer requires it, so we don't, unless we do it manually. You could do that, then restore your non-factory presets from a backup. That said, it'd be great if Line 6 could make the factory presets available as separate downloads.
  21. Boy, I don't know how you use IRs with EDIT without TONS of experimentation! That's what you have to do, try a bunch. I suppose maybe not, if you have so much personal experience with all the available cabs and speakers and mics and positions and IR makers and combinations thereof that you can just open a huge nested directory of IRs and pull out that one magic one, but that's most definitely not me. Plus, auditioning different mics and distances is way quicker with stock cabs than IRs, since you don't have to load some tiny fraction of a pack at a time into your Helix first. I use both stock cabs and IRs myself, but I really doubt IR users are a vast overall majority.
  22. Michael Britt of excellent Kemper profiles fame has a new pack of Helix presets, and a pack of IRs with an interesting philosophy/story behind them. He also has a 25% off sale going on with coupon BLACK FRIDAY.
