Creating and mixing BIG rock guitar tones with Helix (Archetype Lead)
GuitarjonSDS replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
I haven't ever messed with the Ripple setting but I definitely will now! Thanks for the suggestion! -
Hey guys! It has been a while! I made a new tutorial video about creating and mixing huge heavy rock guitar tones in Helix Native because I very often get questions about this process. Figured I'd share it here since some of you might enjoy this. I explain the amp settings and some things about the mixing. The mixing for these guitars turned out to be super basic but with a good 'base-tone' you definitely don't need a lot of processing. Usually when during the mixing process I notice that too much stuff has to happen to make the tones good, I just go back and change amp settings or IR's rather than having to fix everything after the fact. So yeah, less is more! The new Waves PRS amp models came out a few days ago. I wasn't a fan of GTR3 but I figured I'd try the new plugins. They definitely aren't bad but I felt that the Archon (Archetype Lead) in Helix (Native) was so much more convinving and easier to dial in. So I decided to go with Helix anyway... Long story short, Helix is HARD to beat! Here it is, let me know what you think:

yep, equal Thanks very much!

Thanks! What other artists do you think I should cover in a future video?

Thanks guys, glad you're digging the tones!

Hey guys, Since Metallica use Fractal Audio Axe FX's for their live tones I thought it would be cool to see if Helix from Line 6 could come close. I made a couple of tones and honestly, I think the results speak for themselves! I was expecting them to be good but I think they turned out REALLY good. Dual amps can be a little tricky but it wasn't a problem at all. So I made a little tutorial video to show how to get these tones. Hope someone finds this useful and/or entertaining!

WOW! The new Placater and Cali Texas Ch2 amps & FX.....
GuitarjonSDS replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
Thanks for checking out the video and for your kind words! Above all, I'm just so stoked about everything Line 6. They're doing such a great job, especially right now. -
I was messing around with Helix 2.50 this week and the sounds I'm getting here have blown me away! I used to really love the HBE and BE amps in my Fractal but something about the Placater amp is just really special. Still love those but I do prefer this one now. The notes really 'jump out' in a pleasant way and it has tonnes of definition. The low end also is very tight so it actually works well for many different types of tunings. Very cool that they added the Sat, C45 and HBE switch options too. The Cali Texas Ch2 was a very pleasant surprise too. I hadn't used a lot of Lonestar emulations in the past so I didn't really know what to expect but I'm very stoked about the tones I'm getting for clean and low-gain tones. It's kinda the link that was still missing from the Helix.... That HBE too actually. Now it would be cool to see amps like the EVH 5150 III added and rare stuff like a Randall Satan or something haha! Another very cool thing was that they added all the 'old' M-series effects. I mean, those effects are still really of high quality and I enjoyed the crap out of them in my old colored M series multi effects. I'd say we're getting an entirely new fx modeler's worth of content.... for free. So yeah, I can't be anything else than positive about this. I made a video to demonstrate these amps with my new 7-string Ibanez. It has a swamp ash body with Dimarzio PAF-7 pickups. Sweet guitar, was really happy with the tones I got. Also used Helix for bass this time around and I'm very happy with the results I got there.... How are you guys digging the new amps?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-dYVUXinn4

Hey guys, I just finished a tutorial in which I explain how to get some convincing John Petrucci tones with Line 6 Helix (Native) and OwnHammer Recto 2x12/4x12 IR's from the new 6-pack bundles. These tones can be translated to all the different Helix platforms. The sounds came out pretty darn good IMHO..... Let me know what you think! Enjoy:

Time for another gear emulation comparison! This video is all about comparing the Mesa Boogie MKIV emulations in the following platforms (in no particular order): Helix (Native, Floor, Rack or LT) Axe FX Kemper Profiler Amplitube 4 (Mesa pack) Thermionik S-gear Those were all the platforms of which I am aware that they emulate the MKIV amp. Most of them did a very good job but I have a few favorites. The Helix tones did come out very good in the end in my honest opinion! So congrats to Line 6 for not only making such a brilliant emulation of this amp, but also for being such a good competitor to brands like Kemper and Fractal. Of course I'd love to know which one you though was best so let me know! A couple of notes: I know that the S-Gear Wayfarer amp isn't exactly based on a Mesa MKIV or any other amp for that matter, but I do think it's very much inspired by those types of amps and it can be tweaked to sound quite close. That's why I included it anyway. About the Kemper clip: I recognize that the Kemper example perhaps doesn't sound as good as some of the others. Unfortunately I didn't have a MKIV here to profile so I had to rely on existing (commercial) profiles. To keep things as accurate as I could, I chose a direct MKIV profile from a commercial vendor to be able to use the same IR as with the rest. I had to tweak from there. This was honestly the best profile I could find for this test. I guess that's just a drawback of this platform sometimes since you can't ever start a 'preset' from scratch.

Helix in 9 different styles (clean, crunch, rock & metal demo)
GuitarjonSDS replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
Thanks for your feedback willjrock! I hear what you're saying and I've gotten a few other requests for demo's without IR's. The thing is that these demo's just simply reflect how I choose to use Helix Native. It will take too much time for me to also do a demo with the internal cabs. I appreciate your feedback though and I thank you for watching the video! -

Thanks guys! I appreciate that you took the time to watch my video. Ok, tutorials will come soon! :) Which of the tones in this video are your favorites? -
Hi guys! I just uploaded this new video. It's a Helix Native demonstration in 9 different styles ranging from clean to 8-string metal. I used different amp models and OwnHammer IR's for each tone. Helix Native is such a wonderful tool and I've been a fan ever since it came out. Working wth this plugin is just so easy and I get great results every single time! If I get enough requests I could do a tutorial for all the tones. Please enjoy:

Testing Native in a full band mix.. Wall of sound achieved!

Available now: The OwnHammer Heavy Hitters Collection Volume II. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC8JKHc2e6E (taken from the official OwnHammer HHC2 newsletter) The greatly anticipated sequel to last year's viral IR library, the Heavy Hitters Collection Volume I, like its predecessor contains four monumental cabinets, each loaded with three different speaker types, those being: “212 ZLFB†based on a Zilla Fatboy 2x12 cabinet. - “H75†based on Celestion G12H-75 Creamback speakers. - “LYN†based on Celestion G12-50GL Lynchback speakers. - “V30†based on Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. “212 ZLSF†based on a Zilla Super Fatboy 2x12 cabinet. - “M25†based on 6402 cone Celestion G12M-25 speakers. - “V30†based on Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. - “WLV†based on Celestion WH-80 Wolverine speakers. “412 EDVH†based on an EVH 5150 III 4x12 cabinet. - “EDVH†based on Celestion G12EVH speakers. - “SHF†based on Sheffield 1230 speakers. - “V30†based on Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. “412 EMPR†based on an Emperor 4x12 cabinet. - “C65†based on Weber Ceramic 1265 speakers. - “H100†based on Celestion G12H-100 speakers. - “V30†based on Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. Like the HHC1, each cabinet includes dual speaker blend permutations, global V30 cab blends, and a Summary area. In place of the A1 Picks from the HHC1 is a new set of inclusions unique to the HHC2, the Custom Mixes. This takes the A1 segment to a new level, incorporating what likely would have made it to that section, and some things that wouldn't on their own, and blending them together for five tremendous and versatile tones. Each of these comes in four different mix types, mirroring most of the multi-mic recipes from the recent Player Pack entries. Like the A1 Picks in HHC1, the Custom Mixes section takes a library with almost 10,000 individual options and puts you right in the middle of the cream of the crop with 20 files, should you choose to keep it simple. With the HHC2, getting a wide variety of amazing sounds couldn't be easier! The library along with more information and a wealth of sound clips can be found at and purchased from: ownhammer.com/hhc2

Hi guys, I installed Helix Native and I am very impressed! I had to make a metal video to see how well this plugin performs in a full band mix and I am VERY impressed. You just can't beat the functionality of this plugin. The fact that you can keep tweaking your Helix settings right until the very end without re-amping is a huge benefit. Not that it needs a lot of tweaking because it already sounds very good with minor tweaking. I'm using an Emperor 4x12 IR for the upcoming Heavy Hitters Collection by OwnHammer. The release of this amazing pack is coming very soon so stay tuned for that. I love this Emperor cab for huge rock and metal tones, it just sounds great. I'm using the C65 speaker option. I believe that's the stock speaker that came in this cab. Hope you enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI10V7JLeDU

I agree, the Helix sounded very good in this comparison! I agree! Yep, the Helix is totally one of the best tones in this video. I didn't set them all the same as you can see in the video. I just basically dialed them in to sound to my liking. Probably not surprising that because of that, they sound a bit similar. I guess in the end I ran by all of them to see if any frequencies stood out in a bad way and made some tweaks from there.

Hey guys, With all the 'vs' and modeler battle demos going on I thought it would be cool to do a few SDS style. We're comparing 8 different amp modelers in a full band context, just as you would use/hear them in real life. All of the amp modelers are running through the exact same OwnHammer 4x12 EVH IR. All of the plugins without IR loaders go through NadIR (with the internal cabs disabled). The modelers in this video include: Fractal Audio Axe FX Overloud TH3 Peavey Revalver 4 IK Multimedia Amplitube 4 Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5 Line 6 Pod Farm 2 Nick Crow 8505 Line 6 Helix Floor This episode focuses on the legendary Peavey 5150 amp. I'd love to hear your thoughts guys! How well does the Helix stack up to the rest? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cFhcZpxHbg

Getting some super solid rock tones from the Helix...
GuitarjonSDS replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
Thanks guys! Maybe I can post the presets soon but getting those tones was really effortless to be honest. Just start with a guitar with passive pickups like my schecter, load up the OwnHammer M75 OH1 quick start files, use the Solo models and you should get very far!
