I tried using that program and I'm sure its me being stoopud, but it seems beyond my level of comprehension how to load the IR's and everything. I'm generally not unable to learn, but the program does way more than I need it to I'm sure and its not very intuitive......

Single vs Dual amp path channel volume matching
themetallikid replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
well yes, but for my preset OCD'ness and to help facilitate changes I hear when I play them live with the band....I dont want to have 4+ different output volume values to remember where they 'should' be. What I was asking was this...I'll try to simplify my question (for those with the same question).....though I believe I have it figured out. single amp presets 7 single amp presets, all volume matched (enough for live use and no surprises during lead boosts) dual amp presets (for live use using a song per preset approach, utilizing snapshots for verse/chorus/lead etc) Intro/Chorus/Lead = Crunch preset........Verse = Clean preset In the dual amp preset, even though I copy the Crunch Lead Preset utilizing a volume matched Amp block to the Clean preset (I use the 'lead version so all my solo goodies are copied over when I create the Song Preset, no changes in the amp block settings are made, and when I disable the EQ/Drive/Delay/Volume blocks, i'm left with my Crunch preset)...when I split the signal and have an A/B patch that is selected via snapshot.....the overal preset volume is lower than presets that do not have the split signal (dual amps). It makes sense above that when its split, the Helix is assuming you are using both paths and not muting one of them....so it drops the volume on the paths to compensate for the extra signal path's volume. So in order to not have multiple versions of the same amp block sound or multiple output block settings to remember...I was wondering where and what the best place was to make a change so that my 'settings in the blocks' can remain the same, but I can compensate for this volume difference. When I go from a single amp preset to a dual amp preset that has always been where my volume issues have come from...and I understand it now, how to adjust and compensate for what the Helix is doing signal wise. ****answer**** I can adjust the merge block to compensate the volume of the preset and leave my block settings the same that way there should be no difference in volume single vs. dual....however if there is, I can adjust that one parameter and it will be easier to be consistent with my edits. -
ok, I dont have the $$ right now to spend on an IR loader for the few IR's I wanna try this with. Anyone have any decent free apps to recommend or willing to combine the ones I want for me?

I don't have apple, but your right, I have heard similar things regarding that application.

I agree...in my area, there are some bands for sure that have phenomenol instruments, boutique amps on stage, pay $600 for sound/lights in a night and....they get the same audience response to the same song my band plays. Using my $600 guitar, Helix direct to FOH, that we run ourselves on a pair of powered single 15" tops and single 18" powered subs. The difference...between them and us is that they pay 15% booking fee, $600 sound/lights and cost the bar a lot more money.....which in turn raises drink prices on band nights and prevents people from coming out... sorry, I rambled a bit, lol.....but ultimately those patrons will not notice the difference between that band and my band regardless of gear and IR technicalities. I'm not disagreeing with ideas of the OP or how much the technicalities matter....I just think in 'my' scenario of live use I don't get as much mileage (to keep with my vocabulary earlier) out of the information as someone in a studio or recording environment.
-
Your mileage may vary... Your mileage may vary... I agree, I'm just referring that some people get more use out of that information than others. While I find it interesting to know, but will probably never hear, nor dial a tone based on that information.....some may dial in a tone specifically for that information you speak of.
-
I'm interested to watch this when I get home.... While I agree with the premise of 'if it works for me, I don't care about the details'....I also like understanding why something does or doesn't work. It doesn't mean I obsess over every detail with every tone or if I want a certain tone it 'has' to be a certain way....but knowing that your swiss army knife has a toothpick accessory sure makes it easier than using the knife to make one out of a branch. Your mileage may vary...

ahh, my phones are good enough for what I do, but I do know of discussions people had with lag and using certain monitor sources....so helix>headphones is fine. ....sounds pretty simple....I look forward to jamming some tracks... thank you
-
i'm familiar with Reaper a bit from a band demo I mixed better than our sound guy, lmao....lol.... I'm good with that, though free trial may be used already...oh well....$65 aint bad. So can I 'monitor' via headphones in the laptop or the helix? better choice? due to child/wife, I dont have 'true' monitor speakers other than built in laptops which are of course not sufficient
-
Not directly helix related so.....Mods, please move if this isn't relevant to this forum, its just where I live on here..... If I want to start recording....nothing serious, just a way to jam and listen back.....I know my Helix can go to cpu....I've just never done this thing before but what do I all need...... I assume I can send to the cpu via USB? Best free recording application? I'd like to import jam tracks or backing tracks of songs to jam to....
-
aint this the beautifully destructive truth But I love it. I don't mind the details or details revealing details....as long as it leads to something more efficient. I don't see mixing IR's as a tone enhancing thing as I'm happy with my tones, but the ability to save blocks and not have to 'burn' a split path just to use 2 IRs is awesome. Eliminates my need for them to create a stereo IR block (for now).... ...until they do and Mix 2 IR's to use in stereo, lol.
-
Sorry, I'm 'new' at this idea.... Does this mean that I can take my 2 IR's that I use a split path for, and combine them into one IR that I can then use in my Helix to save space/split paths/cpu power?
-
yeah I get it wont be as authentic as some ears would like....but I also play in a cover band on weekends for $100-ish a gig. Most people here just want the same 35-40 songs puked out every weekend and this will at least satisfy the tone monster in my head a bit more. Less tweaking - more playing...lol Indianrock - I see your located in Bellingham, I used to live in Mukilteo for about 2 years....worked temporarily for US West Dex (phone book company back then....that was probably 20 years ago or so....but was a nice area. Was too young to 'get' anything about the music scene there. didn't really play out yet when I was there. Went to one show at a place called Rock Candy (probably the wrong name) in downtown seattle for some ska/punk bands my sister wanted to see. Random thoughts, don't mean to hijack the thread....lol
-
yeah not saying the non-IR tones were bad at all, but it was good to hear back to back comparisons. I'd be cool if they had their own vids that did the same thing so you can compare how the IR really changes what your getting.
-
wow, when played next to each other like that, that tele sounds really fat, juicy and bluesy with just enough single coil bite....mm
-
yeah I'd dig a variax for sure, I just don't have the coin to do it. For live use I'm thinking these will be good enough for me then. Thanks for the input.

ok, so it still retains your pickups sound, it just puts some lipstick and mascara on it to make it sound like the configuration you load....That what I figured was happening... I ask, because in my one guitar I have the split coil EMG's which are decent, but 'eh'...and in my other guitar I have the 85/60 combo, and even though the split one is based off the 85, it sounds a bit different...and the neck pickups are the same. So basically, even using the same guitar IR, both guitars still still sound different....I was hoping to overcome that actually...
-
Possibly stupid question, but I love this option...does it take out the sound of the pickups installed in the guitar and really all your getting into the helix (post guitar IR) is the signal strength? So if you run EMG's or a JB the color the pickup normally passes on to the signal chain is removed and replaced with the color of the guitar IR, or does the IR merely EQ the incoming signal to give the right frequencies a boost/cut to make YOUR pickup sound like its coming out of the guitar the IR is referencing? I hope that makes sense, I wasnt sure how to phrase it. Maybe this will clarify My guitar with EMG's = EMG Sound My guitar with EMG'S > Single Coil IR = Single Coil sound A My guitar w/out EMG's > Single Coil IR = Single Coil Sound B or would this be the same as Single Coil sound A (removes original pickup flavor, output is the same regardless of guitar used)

I wanna know how the '.7' gig goes, lol.... Is that where you are playing in the middle of the 3rd set when your phone alerts you to an email about a thread update and low and behold its the release of 2.8 and you immediately shed your guitar, grab your Helix and run home to try and quickly update before the gig is over so you can return with the MORE brootalz tonez you thought you were getting when you bought it over a year ago? P.S. no tones were actually constructed, edited/tweaked during this message. My Helix was not turned on, or hurt during the production of this message. Please digest the content of this post at your own discretion.

I do solo acoustic shows with just my EV speaker (single one right now) and my Helix Floor. I use the guitar/vocal preset tweaked to my liking, and run both into the respective inputs, and then out via XLR to the powered EV wedge, which I can place next to me, and angled right so that it is enough for me to use as a monitor...eventually I'll get a smaller 12" wedge for in front of me, and then run the Right output into that...or use the direct links on the back to daisy chain.

Exploring deeper functions of Helix - USB control??
themetallikid replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
I looked into it, and with the 'pro' version.....$6/month or so, that aint bad anyway. We have a band kitty I'll take it out of. RIght now we use Google calendar for our gig schedules and such, but a couple guys have work phones and don't like adding an extra email account....so an app with notifications will be easier for them to sync with. Lots of neat features... I created an account with Bandhelper, just having a hard time exporting/importing my list of songs from Setlist. I found instructions on the Bandhelper side, but they don't seem to match up with what I see in Setlist helper to export it with the right file type. Only had a short time to play with it though...maybe more tonight. -

hmm, subscription based....I just don't do enough solo/duet acoustic shows to justify that....although maybe that can change. I'll have to weigh the options. -
Exploring deeper functions of Helix - USB control??
themetallikid replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
Yeah I just looked up the apps website and found out it hasn't been updated for about 5 years....so, thinking its time to export and import my stuff into a more recent app. I'll look into the Bandhelper app. The only thing I could find on the Setlist helper page was a link to a Bluetooth pedal that you could purchase.......so, thinking just with that option alone its time to move on as I have a great tool already in-house. -

themetallikid replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
yeah for acoustic I only really run 1 preset with 4 snapshots....clean/chorus/clean with delay/lead.....so I wouldn't need the advanced programming that you use Litesnsirens....however, I would run it in 4 stomp/4snap mode then and use the stomps to advance page(s). Though I suppose if I ever ran a regulated setlist I could do what your intending. I just usually call songs on the fly though. I'll have to dig into my Setlist helper app tonight when I add some more songs -
Re-purpose the global EQ.... figured this out at my last gig
themetallikid replied to codamedia's topic in Helix
interesting...I havent touched the global, but its nice to add gadgets to my swiss army knife.
