bnk files are a Bank - a set of 5 Patches on the same knob position. A Patch is a single guitar and pickup combination. That forum is the only JTV Patch exchange resource there is (don't know why Line 6 don't support one) I expect that most people will have registered and looked, but it depends on what you want to achieve with the JTV how much you will use other peoples patches or banks. Personally I don't want balanced volumes because the original volumes are the relative volumes of the original guitars and that gives you more variety into the same amp, but sometimes it is nice to get somebody's model of a different guitar if only to see what they have done. It is worth reading up about the impact of things like Volume and Tone Pot resistance and Tone capacitor values and then trying making changes. Personally I used Workbench to make a bits and pieces guitar (Custom 1) that is completely different depending on pickup position (patch) selected - for example: LP Bridge, 89 Bridge, Jazzbox Neck, Strat Neck + Mid on masonite (very bright), Tele Neck. The different levels on this virtual guitar mean that a point of breakup Amp will be clean for the Neck through to Mid positions but breaks up in the Bridge positions with the 89 being mid focussed and the LP being fat; very different sounds in each position. But this guitar while it suits my current band needs for completely different sounds in sections of the same song would be a complete waste of time to anybody else.

JTV-89F and HD500x
Rewolf48 replied to mark51969's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Demo of the concept in action - just feed an acoustic model down one path and magnetics down the other path and keep the paths totally separate; this demo has both active at the same time and allows cross fading between them: -
Just looked up prices in the UK for Mission Engineering EP1-L6. Are we really talking £120 ($170 US) for a pedal with a simple Pot in it?

In case you don't know about it, there is a Patch exchange for JTV (and Variax Standard) hosted here: http://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=138.0

Output levels changing? Trim tracking issue?
Rewolf48 replied to CGM777's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
Just a thought, but if there is compression on the vocal channel, and it is trimmed for solo voice at lower than performance volume, then the compressor will react to the higher volumes when the backline is playing by reducing the final volume and thus reducing the vocals in the mix. Or it might be as simple as too much backline getting into the vocal mics - especially if the Bose L1 is behind the singers; rearranging the stage so that nothing except the singers is pointing into the mics could help as might tightening up on the eq. Listen to the vocal channel in isolation to see what is getting in, or look at the frequency analyser displays? -
Pod HD always sends Patch Change when it patch changes (apparently this makes synchronising devices easy). The way to achieve what you want is to change the “System†MIDI Channel from 1 to say 16 and make sure that the vocal processor is only listening to Channel 1 (at least not Omni) that way it will ignore the Pod HD changes and only listen to the CC messages you want to send

<geek mode on> is the code for a non-breaking space, and is very useful when you don't want a space between words to be used as a line break. The example on Wikipedia is between say 100 km where the km on the following line would look wrong. Also used in Dates or Names In MS Word you press Ctrl+Shift+Space together to insert one. <geek mode off>

69s: Improve sustain?
Rewolf48 replied to clay-man's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
As well as the above: New Strings - old strings lose sustain and brightness You cannot change the block as it has to cope with the piezo wires and has a circuit board on it, but you could try some lead tape (as used to tune golf clubs) to add mass. You can also use this behind the headstock to increase the mass there rather than buying a clamp-on device. Sensible advice is to try extra mass at the headstock first with a small g-clamp or a clamp type Capo. It might also reduce any dead spots on the neck that you might have. Add String Trees to the headstock to increase the angle over the nut, or better yet a retainer bar, which may also dampen ghost notes that cause warble. - something like this http://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Mite-Electric-Guitar-Retainer/dp/B00D7OT6ZGand it will also add mass at the same time. Lower the magnetic pick-ups - the magnets pull on the strings and because you can't get energy out of nothing, the electric signal comes from drag on the strings by the magnetic field. Lower the pickups and you lower the drag on the strings. Everything you do will be a compromise of some sort: Lower the pickups and you get less mag volume, but you can just raise the amp gain Add mass to the headstock and you get some ugly additions to the headstock (but it can be hidden at the back). Thicker strings makes it harder to play... so practice and get your fingers strong enough to use medium strings rather than lights. (medium is 11 on top E) Adding weight to the Trem block is probably one of the harder options as there is so little room to work with - the neck side has the circuit board on it and there isn't that much space on the back side if you want to be able to dive without cutting some wood away... and removing wood is one of those things that will probably reduce sustain! -
Output levels changing? Trim tracking issue?
Rewolf48 replied to CGM777's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
Yep, when you have active back-line the monitors should only have stuff that cannot otherwise be heard. I for example play Guitar through a monitor (directly) and everybody else on stage can hear enough from that so that they don't need any guitar in the monitors. I however often need some Vocals and Acoustic Guitar in the monitors because otherwise I can't hear them. [probably says more about guitarists having themselves loud!] In your case with the Bose L2 system you are probably positioning that behind you (if I remember the Bose suggestions for how it is used), in which case the feed to the Bose also needs a lot less of the amplified instruments and drums while you are playing, but the levels need to be raised up in order to play back any recordings -
Output levels changing? Trim tracking issue?
Rewolf48 replied to CGM777's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
So the vocal levels dropped when everybody is playing but the recordings are fine... I don't think it is trim tracking, because that has zero impact on the level of a channel - what it does is detects that the input level is high and potentially going to distort so it drops the channel trim and simultaneously increases the channel level to maintain the same overall level. Playback of the recording are fine, but Instruments and Vocal live and the Vocals disappear... So when the Instruments are playing are you monitoring them through the PA and having them live in a rehearsal room? Perhaps giving doubled up instruments and only single version of vocals. In a rehearsal room I would expect only to have Vox through the main outs and monitors even though the instruments are being fed in for recording purposes. It might be worth grouping all the instruments so that there is a single knob to turn down while you are playing together, and then bring it up again to listen to the recording - or use scenes. -
New picking technique I'm trying
Rewolf48 replied to shredjsx's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Knopfler is well known for only using thumb and first two fingers. It does help if you have nails of course! http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/guitars/how-to-play-guitar-like-mark-knopfler-619055 I use pick sometimes, and fingers sometimes and will swap between them in the same song as needed - the pick goes in my mouth which is not necessarily very hygienic, but at least I can get it again quickly when needed. Another option to try as used by GangsterUSA (Glenn Dulaune) is a thumb pick and fingers -
1V RMS is a 0db signal - Pro level (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level) HD500 1/4" outs can only do -10db signals - Consumer level (with the switch in the LINE setting) The XLR outputs and 1/4" on Amp setting are significantly quieter. Something like this claims to do what you want: https://proaudio.com/catalog/art-cleanbox-pro-2-channel-level-converter.asp
-
Your HD settings are fine to avoid overloading any post mixer effects, but the speaker is has 2 max positions - I presume by Max for Line that you mean 0 (12 o'clock). How are you connecting the two together XLR or 1/4"? If XLR then you should know that the HD500 output is Mic Level, so turn that speaker sensitivity all the way up to MAX (for Mic). If 1/4" then check your 1/4" Out switch next to the expression pedal and make sure it is set to Line and not Amp.

HELP FOR DOWNTUNING 6 string GUITAR using HD500!!!
Rewolf48 replied to abinash_ihd's topic in POD HD
I think B) is B ) so that is -4 -
The other thing to consider is DSP and Block limitations - HD500x has 2 Amp + 8 Other positions and only a single split which I am finding too limiting to do really interesting patches. But until I sell some stuff that is all I can buy. Helix has 2.4x DSP available (relative to HD500x but more expensive models) and allows 32 of anything on 4 paths (8 each); you can do a lot more with the Helix including ReAmping which can only be done on HD500x with a separate Audio Interface

several hundred dollars?? Shure SE846 (the only Quad Driver IEM from Shure) are £800 list in the UK and at best £600+ from ebay. I will need to win the lottery to something that expensive that also doesn't work properly without a digital wireless system too.

Stage Source speakers - Horizontal vs vertical
Rewolf48 replied to archisc's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
Paul Hindmarsh when he demoed Helix used a pair of L2m positioned as backline on their sides tilted in the 30deg position but in PA/Reference mode. -
Also good for the money: Westone UM-1
-
The XLR outputs from the HD500 are fairly quiet mic signals (unless you have boosted the volume level significantly somewhere in the patch which risks overloading some internal effects and adding distortion) while the daisy chain XLR outputs from the L2 are line level. I always go: JTV -> VDI -> HD500 -> L6Link -> L2t -> XLR -> FoH Basic volume is set on HD500 with L2t at 12 o'clock and then I use the Valve Comp with max threshold and output controlled by Exp 2 to control volume while playing. I use the L2t in 60 deg monitor position in front of me. We don't have a sound guy, so I control the volume boosts when needed

New pick guard and 9.5 hybrid strings
Rewolf48 replied to shredjsx's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
That's nice - where did you get the pickguard from? My 69 stays in tune really well too, but I am using Elixir 11's -
That sounds good - if you connect Helix to the Computer via USB then the dry guitar USB feed could be fed into Jam Origin MIDI guitar and then the resulting MIDI into a VSTi. Best news is that Jam Origin MIDI Guitar has a free trial so you could try it at no cost. If it works let us know...

Not that simple a task really; If you want the best solution to this as the moment then I suggest looking at Fishman Triple Play which goes wireless from the guitar mounted controller to your PC http://www.fishman.com/products/series/tripleplay/tripleplaywirelessguitarcontroller.php
