The latest software was quite a while back, but reports of this behaviour or similar have been around for a lot longer The were back in the old days (2010 or so) issues with apparently random jumps in volume or tone; one possible cause is that the Amp Control knobs are being moved just a tiny bit by the vibration from the sound, and if you have say your Amp Volume knob set high up and it moves very slightly, then the HD will think that you moved it and want the amp set to the current knob position setting. http://uk.line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/47935/ You could try "parking" the amp controls on the HD500 at 0 and see if that helps. If the unit is a few years old (out of warranty) it might be worth giving it a "service" - clean the pots, switches and sockets (yes open it up), backup all presets and reload the firmware then restore your presets. And if you are using L6 Link then while you can get away with a mic cable if it is for any distance you might want to try a proper AES/EBU cable.

Can I connect my lt3 to a headphone output?
Rewolf48 replied to mcbeddall's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
It was worth asking - I have never tried a Firehawk as I am still on one of the early HD500 units and the problems I was having getting a good sound originally all came down to a proper FRFR speaker rather than just a PA speaker. My L2t has fixed that issue - and learning a few HD500 specific tricks of course. -
You need to plug the Variax into your normal amplification system - Workbench HD changes the in-memory model on the JTV in real time (so you can hear what effect the changes you make are having); it doesn't provide any audio interface, and it doesn't overwrite the saved model unless you explicitly send the changes to a patch in the Variax.

Can I connect my lt3 to a headphone output?
Rewolf48 replied to mcbeddall's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
I don't know why nobody has asked this before (including me), but when you set up the patch to sound great in headphones.... what headphones were you using? If you are setting up patches using headphones you really should be using Studio Headphones - those that try to be as flat as possible; Consumer headphones for use with mp3 players are typically designed to give a nice sound with a well mixed source and can for example be bass heavy. Setting up your patch with bass heavy headphones will cause you to cut the bass much more than you thought you were, and when you then play the same sound through an L3 which is basically a big flat response Studio monitor the bass end will be absent and it will sound thin. -
If you find it really hard, then it is quite safe to turn the HD500 upside down and shave a bit off the black rubber block using a file; just try not to get too many shavings inside; this will let the pedal travel just a little bit farther and engage the switch a little easier.

Think I have found what you are after - obviously it was only the original 16 Amps and not the later additions such as the SLO or the Model Packs. Sadly Nick is no longer with us. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzPo5gALR-IkcnBSTjFlUjVlbHM/view?usp=sharing

Stage Source speakers - Horizontal vs vertical
Rewolf48 replied to archisc's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
Monitor mode definitely does cut the lower end - whether you want to do this depends on what you are after. I use mine as a monitor but have already cut most of the low end from my guitar to avoid getting muddy with the bass player and drummer  Paul Hindmarsh when has demoing Helix used a pair of L2m on their sides but in PA Ref mode - I checked because the other thing that Monitor mode does is to sum L+R to mono which isn't what you want if you have two of them. -
I agree with cruisinion2 just get these for £76 - I also have a really good match with my L2t speakers and don't deafen the house while setting up live patches: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0016MNBAM/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2

Replacement Body for JTV-69
Rewolf48 replied to jcosta_sr's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
There have been successful transplants - mainly by people who can build there own guitars anyway, but I would look to see whether there is anybody that could do a custom body for you; you do get to choose your own shape and finish and could end up with something unique. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/latest-jtv-variax-transplant.1297783/ -
The VDI cable does give you a few additional options - such as being able to change guitar models as you change patches, to have a different tuning on each patch without defining it on the guitar, and to be able to use the volume and tone knobs as continuous controllers on HD500 and Helix. For the equivalent of a little bit of EQ on the patch it seems worth it to me. IdeaScale is not letting me log in with my Google ID at the moment, but there was one (or more) ideas raised ages ago suggesting that the cable simulation used in the L6 Digital Wireless lines should be included in the VDI connection somewhere.

Can I connect my lt3 to a headphone output?
Rewolf48 replied to mcbeddall's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
You can use the XLR out from the L3 to send to PA, so don't worry about using that output to feed the L3. I would send XLR out from the Firehawk into the mixer inputs on the L3 - this gives you the option of using the EQ if you need to and gives you additional gain controls. There is no reason (as long as the cab simulation in on) for the Headphones and main outputs to sound different. If you go ahead with the idea of using the headphones out is that you should use a splitter to get the separate L+R mono signals and feed them into the two mixer inputs on the L3 as this will mix them together into mono. A 1/8 stereo to 2 x Phono adapter is pretty cheap and can be used to connect to a stereo system - that can be extended with a pair of phono to 1/4 jack adaptors so that it can link to the L3. -
M20d recording and overdubbing question
Rewolf48 replied to CDogMcFly's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
For this purpose it doesn't need to be a full DAW, even something as simple as Audacity on a lightweight laptop would do - all you need to do is copy the files and play back the overall mix (or a simple mix from the single tracks) into the mixer and record both that and the new tracks on the M20d. You can then trim all of the tracks to the first count in click from the drummer and they will be in sync across the two sessions for when you want to do a proper mix in your full DAW later -
M20D not saving monitor output levels
Rewolf48 replied to Phildoanfield's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
All the final output levels are set to zero so that you don't have loud and potentially damaging signal levels going out when you switch on, and of course you looking like a bungling idiot! For example if your L3 was set to 12 when you saved the setup and then as part of loading or unloading (or a helper that doesn't know what they are doing) the knob got pushed to 5pm (full volume) then you could get quite a shock when you switch the system on. By defaulting all the outputs to zero level you can elegantly bring them up and everybody thinks you know what you are doing. (well it has worked for me so far :) ) -
In a monitor position I find 12 o'clock on the L2 reasonable and then control the volume with the HD Master Volume knob - because you can see that one while the L2 volume is facing the floor. Normal xlr cable is fine for L6Link for short runs. One little trick is that the "Mix Out" XLR Output from the L2 is a good Line Level signal for sending to the Desk with the D/A conversion happening in the L2, rather than the Mic level signal from the HD500

M20D - where do the solo signals go?
Rewolf48 replied to Phildoanfield's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
I would double check the headphones on another source before doing any soldering. The M20d sometimes has issues with the sockets - for example problems with ground or shorting against the case (see other threads); not saying it is a problem in your case, but test them elsewhere before assuming the headphones are wrong. -
Line 6 L2T or traditional monitors?
Rewolf48 replied to r1pt0rn's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
You will loose the ability to control the speaker mode from the HD. So if you planned on using the Guitar Amp emulation mode of the L2, then you can no longer switch between that mode and PA/Reference mode when you change patches. If you are planning to use the speakers as Studio Monitors then they will be in PA mode all the time and you don't loose anything. I use L6 Link in rehearsal and on stage in PA mode with my L2, but at home when I want to play along with recordings I use the XLRs Guitar Amp mode works great if you have some other pre-amp - I used it to demo my Marshall JMP-1 to a buyer because I had already sold all my guitar cabs. -
The M20d is probably treating it as a USB drive; you can record to it if you want or play directly from the drive using the media player, but you cannot use the iPod as a digital music player (except as you said via the 1/8 socket). So yes it will charge the Nano, but probably not very fast as it is only expecting to power USB memory sticks, and you probably can't use the controls on the Nano while it is connected.

Line 6 L2T or traditional monitors?
Rewolf48 replied to r1pt0rn's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
For home practice it is worth mentioning that USB Audio doesn't get passed to the L6Link output of the HD500, but if you use a pair of XLRs to the L2T then it works fine, and even better if you have two L2 ;) -
You do know that you can change the batteries? :P

Totally different speakers: The Alto is a general purpose PA speaker and has "mic/line inputs" intended to work with mic level signals and it's 800W can give 125dB Peak SPL The Friedman is a monitor designed for use with modellers and wants line level signals; its 500W can give 129bB Peak SPL 6db difference is a doubling in volume, so assuming the manufacturer figures are anything like comparable (probably not) then the Friedman is half as loud again as the Alto. That said 125dB peak or even 122 dB continuous is stupid loud for close listening, so both are good; the differences will be in the quality of the sound and there you usually get what you paid for. Professional Stage monitors such as those made by my local sound reinforcement company (they do big events such as stadium tours or outdoor festivals) are £1350 each to buy, weigh 42KG, have separate inputs for the woofer and tweeter (to be fed by a £2000+ speaker processor) and "only" output about 105dB which is loud music level but not too dangerous to your hearing.

Control Varian from computer
Rewolf48 replied to Snowskull's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yes you can use the Helix (with the latest firmware) to do this, but you can also do this with an HD500X or HD500. If you are looking for cheap then a used HD500 + VDI cable is the best way to go, if you are looking for a warranty then it depends on budget as Helix is about 2.5x the price of an HD500X. With the HD boxes if you use magnetics for the electric sounds and models for the acoustics then you can have both in a single patch and just use a switch to go between them or you can cross-fade with an expression pedal. Using a single patch means that you can have trails on any effects you are using - using electric and acoustic models means changing patches so delay trails will be cut short (imagine end of solo and last note fades out after acoustic guitar is playing). Helix at this point in time is the same functionality as HD, but there is a possibility that Helix will be enhanced so that you can press a switch to change models (as well as switch the active path). What you get with Helix is more processing power so it runs more detailed models and you can have a lot more in a single patch. -
Using only piezo without modelling?
Rewolf48 replied to Dshow's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Line 6 - just give us the option of Piezo blend as well as Magnetic blend and we will all be happy! Piezo only by setting to 100% Peizo and for Ovation sounds a mix somewhere in between. Seriously while the full acoustic sounds are great, sometimes you need that fake acoustic sound to fit in at the back of a mix, and such a blend wouldn't cost anything in processing power - it is just a case of only mixing a certain amount of the body and other simulations with the source signal. Vote here: http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Clean-piezo-signal-from-JTV/515946-23508 and here: http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/JTV-Piezo-pickup-blend/576212-23508 With only 44 and 10 votes respectively it is not surprising that they haven't done anything about it. -
You must be connecting it using the XLR output from the HD500? The Friedman is expecting a Line level signal (0dbV) on its XLR's (or at least that is what it outputs) but the HD500 only outputs a Mic level signal somewhere around -20 dbV from the XLR output sockets, but it outputs a 0dbV signal from the 1/4" outputs. I suggest getting 1/4" to XLR adaptor and sending the signal from the HD500 1/4" outputs to the Friedman.
