Hello Helix friends I hope everyone is doing well in the pandemic and political climate. But to take a break from our real problems and have a little fun... I have been obsessed with 412 cabs with Greenback speakers lately. Funny because I was a hardcore Vintage 30 guy. I'm not one that likes huge libraries of IR packs, so I just made a couple that work well (according to my ear and taste) with most Helix amp models, as well as my real amps into a reactive load box. I think they are neutral enough to leave a lot of the tone control to the amp controls, pedals, and guitar tone knob as well. Anyway, though I would share with you all. Oh, maybe preamp and full amp model blocks are only an option in Helix. Sorry, I know nothing about Pod Go yet, other than the great videos Paul Hindmarsh has posted. In Helix, you have a choice of a full amp model block, meaning both the preamp and power amp sections are modeled, or just the preamp. You would generally use a preamp-only block if you have a tube amp you are plugging into that is going to provide the power section "color", like the Line 6 DT25/50 or really any Mesa, Marshall, etc. If you are plugging into a guitar amp that is neutral and intended for use with modelers (Line 6 Spider Valve, PG Bias Head, Fryette Power Station, Duncan Power Stage, Katana maybe, others), then you would use the full amp model blocks generally. Reading about the Katana and the Tube Logic power section, I'm guessing that the "Tube Logic" tech may be able provide some of that tube power amp feel and coloration if desired. If you can't disable it on the amp or software, you may be double-dipping on the tube-ness if using a full amp model (not just preamp model) which can be unpleasant...like too much icing on a cake. I found it best to neutralize the amp as much as possible and let Helix or other modeler do all the work. Personal preference and experience though. Helix also has cab model blocks (and can use impulse responses / cab models). It looks like the Katana is using a somewhat traditional guitar-type speaker and maybe not full range (not sure though), which can color a sound as well. So using the modeler's cabinet models through a traditional guitar speaker is kind of double dipping on the coloration as well, again could be unpleasant. But all this is generally easy to check with some experimenting with the modeler and A-B tests with the amp and headphones.

Not sure how much help I'll be, but I'll give it a go. I don't have a Katana, but just read about it a bit and checked out some images. It looks like it is engineered for other external modelers (such as Helix) and should be plug and play just using the Power Amp in. I wouldn't personally try to mess with 4CM, probably not worth the effort and cables. https://www.boss.info/us/products/katana-50_mk2/ Amplify Your External Gear The Katana-50 MkII rocks as a standalone amp, but it also excels as a powered cabinet for a favorite preamp, modeler, or multi-effects unit. Connecting to the rear-panel Power Amp In jack bypasses Katana MkII's preamp and effects, letting you tap straight into the Tube Logic power section, complete with grab-and-go Power Control. And with BOSS Tone Studio, the input can be easily optimized for your particular gear with a high-pass filter and adjustable gain. So with other modeling amplifiers I have with similar logic of plugging into power amp in or effects return to bypass the internal modeling (Line 6 Spider Valve MKii and Positive Grid Bias Head), I just use Helix full amp models (not just preamps), turn the cabs off on the Helix presets, take a 1/4" cable from Helix left/mono out to the amp's power amp in/effects return and done. Great sound usually. I don't know anything about the Katana's Tube Logic Power section tech and the coloring/effect that may have. But generally, the less coloring by the amp, the better/controllable/predictable the results with a modeler. Maybe someone with a Katana will chime in. They do look like cool amps.

Most headphones have a single driver/speaker where the HR has separate HF and LF driver. Headphones also usually have some engineered fabric between the driver and the users ear, not just for comfort. This can really smooth things out in a good set of headphones. This may sound a little odd to you, but this is cheap/free to try. If you are feeling crafty, try laying some fabric (towel, pillow case, etc.) over the HF driver on the HR speaker. Fabric layers can filter/attenuate and smooth out frequencies, especially high frequencies with a compression horn, which may help with the near field harshness. You might experiment with multiple layers or different fabrics. If you find success with fabric and want to improve aesthetics, you can always attach it behind the grille of the HR. Mesa uses engineered, coated grille cloth in their speaker cabinets to tame high frequencies and smooth out the cabinet sound. Other manufacturers do as well. Even the coaxial FRFR designs like Line 6 Powercab and Mission Gemini have the HF driver under a fabric center dust cap of the 12" LF/woofer driver. Plus I imagine they use engineered grille cloth as well. Anyway, good luck and have fun!

I always had a hard time with the PA style speakers with horn separate and above the woofer. I think being away from the speaker a certain distance to allow convergence of the HF and LF driver helps. They can sound worse the closer you get to them. The HF drivers/horns can be harsh too. So maybe with what you have now, I would recommend you put some distance between you and the Headrush 108 if you haven't already tried it. I don't know much about the Pod Go, but Helix has a nice global EQ that can help even things out with different speaker types. I tried the Headrush 12" in Guitar Center and a Line 6 Powercab and found a huge difference. I believe the design and the wood cabinet of the Powercab certainly helped, but really I believe the coaxial design of the HF driver in the center of LF helps most of all. I have a PC 112+, but really just use FRFR 90% of the time. So a PC 112 plain could fit your needs. Not sure how you feel about used, but they are hitting the used market nowadays for around $400. Still not quite as low as the Headrush but worth it if you can swing it IMO.

The 50W Fryette Power Station PS-2 is the best amp with Helix and my Mesa 212 I have tried. I nearly drove myself (and probably others on this forum) crazy trying different things. The Fryette is neutral and you can run Helix full amp models with it. I even made some IR’s from the Fryette and Mesa to run to headphones for silent practice or tweaking tones true to my live rig.

So I recently moved and just got around to setting up the home office. With everything still in boxes and stacked up, my old Klipsch THX 2.1 computer speakers were on top and accessible. So I grabbed the box off hooked them up. I haven't had these out of the box in a few years and forgot how good they sounded for just music playback and gaming. Helix 2.80 update came out and I couldn't wait to jam. So i just plugged Helix phones out to the stereo line in on the Klipsch's. I was blown away with how it sounded through these little guys! Pretty sure it's an analog power amp and no fancy DSP or anything. Just good analog design. I wouldn't necessarily crank them all the way up due to the transients and peaks of live guitar/bass/instruments, but I had it up pretty loud. I did have to use an isolating power strip to address ground hum/buzz since the speakers were connected to the computer and I was connecting Helix to the line in. I have two Powercab 112+'s, JBL Eon 515xt's, Tannoy Reveal 802 studio monitors, Fryette PS2 & Mesa cabs, etc. and love them all. I have to say, these Klipsch computer speakers were surprisingly pleasant to play Helix through. So for someone just wanting a simple desk setup without going full blown studio monitors, the $124 Klipsch 2.1 rig makes for a nice Helix/modeler-friendly bedroom setup. Yeah you can do that with two PC112s. Bit more wiring and another trip for load in. Larger footprint, unless you stack them. I'm not super serious about getting a PC212, but had it been out when I picked up the PC112's, I probably would have gone dor the PC212,

Reading through the Powercab 212 Plus manual, I see a couple of things that are intriguing: PC212+ has neodymium magnets and only 12 lbs heavier than PC112+, which has ceramic magnets and is 35 lbs. 47 lbs is still in the one hand grab and go ballpark, for me anyway. PC212+ allows you to have a different speaker/mic/IR per side. I love V30s and Greenbacks mixed in a cab, like the Bogner Ubercab. There may be a little more processing under the hood than just the "PC112+ brain". I've been a 212 player for a long time with my Mesa cab. I might be inclined to sell my two PC112+'s and buy a PC212+. That would make a heck of a wet/dry half stack rig with my Mesa 212 and Fryette PS2, even if it never left the house ;)

Well, I didn't end up contacting support. I was able to update successfully with my wife's laptop with only Line 6 updater installed. Must be an issue with USB on my Alienware X51 R2. Funny that my Helix 2.80 update went fine amd not the Powercab

I just tried to update my Powercab 112+ to v2.0 through Line 6 Updater v1.17 and it failed with an error and some instructions to turn the Powercab off, connect the USB, and try again. The Powercab display was frozen showing "Select/Connect USB". Updater would not see the Powercab again unless I restarted the computer. I tried different USB ports, but no success. I had just updated Helix to 2.80 with the same USB cable in the same computer port successfully on the first try.

Hmm, maybe. I think there is a Supro cab in AT4. Not sure if its based on the 6x9 speaker or what.

There are some great separate rack preamps and power amps from Marshall, Mesa, Engl, VHT/Fryette, etc. It would make sense to model them separately as new models. How about a Helix "Rack 'em up" update ;)

I have created a couple of IR's of that Marshall Check v30/JC AT4 cab in your project, each with a slightly different processing method. There is only a very subtle difference between the two. Same here. Just Helix into the effects return of my Mesa Walkabout or M9. Life was simple amd sounded great.

Powercab also has the LF Raw mode with the HF driver off and no EQ. Its basically like running a traditional guitar cab with a good transparent solid state amp. I have two Powercabs and love LF Raw mode. They are surprisingly good traditional guitar speakers as well as FRFR. I actually like them better than my Mesa Recto 212 V30 cab + SS amp with Helix. Just another versatility option you get with the Powercabs. Never tried the ASM's though.
