crackling sound in my own presets for a hofner verythin line semi hollow body
PerS replied to sherimehmood's topic in Helix
Just a longshot… your recording sounded like the Hofner was quieter, but in case that was just a technicality in the recording – If you have any block in your preset where you can change the “Headroom” (like e.g. Vintage Delay, Adriatic Delay, Transistor tape), turn it up and se if it make any difference. If it is set to low it can/will clip the signal. Well, at least worth trying before changing cables and mic’s :-) By the way, the preset you supplied is a “php”-file, not a preset, so I could not check it out. //Per -
V.3.61 is bugfix update of Edit. No firmware update on Helix, still 3.60. So you did it successfull :-) /Per

Agree, hope OP will. But it’s actually a funny story on this with Google translate… A few years ago, I proposed to my gf that we should go to Italy on vacation. So, I wrote her a mail asking her if she would like to go with me describing how fun and romantic it would be, Florens in April… Just to make it more interesting I came up with the bright idea to translate the mail to Italian. My advice is - Check the translation both ways before sending it. Conclusion is I’m surprised she didn’t slap me :-) We had a great time and had a good laugh about it. Take care //Per

I made a copy of the included Allure IR's (my PC+112) in case of an "accident"... Below is a list how they where loaded by default Pos IR/Name 1- Allure_64_A30_G12.wav 2- Allure_59_Tweed_P10N.wav 3- Allure_64_USDeluxe_P12N.wav 4- Allure_67_Brit_Greenback.wav 5- Allure_70s_WhoWatt_100.wav 6- Allure_90s_Cali_V30.wav //Per Allure-Pack-IRs.zip

Oh, sorry somebodyelse, I forgot to include the English translation in the post, impolite of me. Usually do that but was probably so exited to answer in Swedish :-] A couple of days ago I found out that there is a Global Reset on the PC itself, if you press the “Home/house button” and scroll down the menu. Think it was last in the list. I don’t think that is described in the manual… Haven’t tried it but would be surprised if it wouldn’t restore everything to default. Still a good Idea to make the backup because it will delete all IR’s and presets if you made your own. //Per

I prefer to use the AES cable, one less D/A-A/D conversion and less risk for noise. Schmalle’s video explains it well. If you want to use the XLR’s and find the signal level too low, in HX Edit click on the XLR output block and increase the “Level” to match the PC+ input indicator. Or, you can also trim the input gain on the Powercab (input 1 and 2 individually) to a suitable level. I use the Gain for Input 2 on PC+ (e.g. under System in PC Edit) to increase volume (+12db) when I use my Variax 500 to run the acoustic models direct into PC+ through the XLR from the Variax XPS/power supply (yes, I know, stone age). Works great (but even better via Helix and a good preset…). Just to correct myself – What I suggested above in Helix would be a change per preset, not always preferred. A more “global approach” would be to check that Helix XLR are set to Line level in Global Setting. Set to Instrument it will be like what you get. This change will affect all your preset the same way. If the volume is still low it’s still possible to increase the input gain on the PC+. The changes I described above using HX Edit and PC Edit can off cause be made directly on the device (HX via Global Setting and PC+ via “little house” knob…) To be fast is not always best :-) //Per

And I couldn’t even take it in that it was possible... ;-) Well accidents happen, that’s when this forum is at its best. I made the backup… :-), so extracted from HX Edit the one/Factory1 to be used if you want/need. Unzip and all the files are in the included map (original/unchanged). On my Dropbox - https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/uxo5i5ugpr1lfz8ybhjb6/Helix-LT-Backup-2023-Apr-26.zip?rlkey=kzvd1eetxqihfcwfub36vte1k&dl=0 //Per

I guess you made a backup when updated from 3.5 to 3.6. In that case you can extract the files you want using HX Edit/Files/Extract Files From Backup. Unselect what you don’t want to have and download (Extract Files…) Hope you find your preset... //Per

I have a Helix LT and did use a PitchBlack Plus for many years (great tuner that let me hook two guitars to my old pedal board and program the tuner for different tunings). When getting rid of most of my pedals I also tested/compared the tuner in Helix with PB+, no difference. Also tested it against both software tuners and a Boss tuner. PB and Helix tuners stood up really well. Since 2017 there has been at least one update addressing the tuner function and stability. I think it works just great, so easy to use. Sold my PB and only use the Helix tuner. Is there limitations, probably but nothing that effects me today. Read an advice many years ago (just to add to theElevators point above), think it was on the POD HD forum – Guitar pickup in neck position, volume all the way up and no pedals between the guitar and tuner. Be sure to use fresh strings… worn out strings can be hard to get in tune. Has work for me anyway //Per

You are right… anyway, I will link to all four. In the http://hmon.ir/helix/fx_finder.htm, I hadn’t tried that one. That is handy and that name translation is not in any of the other three. Find it very useful. That was important when I made the pdf and the DSP calculator, to be able to see both L6-name and what it’s based on. For fun I made a search (ctrl+f) in my pdf and got 5 hits on “mail” and 10+ on for “fender” :-). There are a few duplicates but it’s possible to search in the documents too. I haven’t locked them down, but you can mark and copy content if you wish. I have locked cells in Excel to be edited but that’s because it’s so easy to by accident screw up formulas, try to be free from possibility to do user mistakes :-).

I can absolutely add those links to the sheet in the next update. It has been a while since I checked them out and had a quick look at them just a minute ago. My quick reflection on them is/was: It would been nice if, at least the last three, added DSP usage to the preset. As it is a preset created in Helix/HX it will be working/be in the limits, but you have no idea how much DSP there is left. If you know that it was eg 12% left, and need to add an EQ, you know it will fit. If you check the Cheat Sheet, you can also see that you can eg add 50% of the Dist pedals, at least if you don’t use stereo :-). My comment om the individual ones. http://hmon.ir/helix/fx_finder.htm - Don’t understand this one… why would I like to know in what release an amp/effect was added and see a pic of it? It would be a simple solution to link to Helix Help, Fluid Solo and/or Ben Vesco for additional info. Seen many referring to this site so it probably fill a need. https://dbagchee.github.io/helix-preset-viewer/ - Its OK when it will be updated with the 3.60. At least it could not view my Grammatico preset correctly. https://hxview.netlify.app/ - This is my favorite. Perfect to check that all commands are there and working/see that the behavior is as expected. https://hxview.vercel.app/ - This is OK, very clear view of the settings in each block. Not as good visualization as the previous one. The reason I made the links in my document to Ben Vesco, Presonid, Fluid Solo and Helix Help was that I used those sites to verify and, in some cases, found info I needed in the Cheat Sheet. Just as a curtesy to the ones done the heavy job. Remember the Cheat Sheet was lazy me who needed a one stop source to info I otherwise hade to find in different locations. The DSP Excel sheet was a combo of me having DSP problems with some presets, found Ben Vesco's site and Excel programming is quite fun... The Cheat Sheet/pdf sheet is actually a print out from the the DSP calculator/Excel file, it's one of the tabs. That said, I will add the above links as a source to more useful information/tools. Thanks for the input Schmalle, and sorry for my rambling :-) //Per

Hi stelios12 Thanks, much appreciated... Glad you liked it and have use for it. I published an update in another/new thread, add it to this thread too. It includes the 3.60 update. The difference in this update of the document is that I hade to calculate the DSP values myself… Earlier I have relied on Ben Vesco :-), now I hade to steal his method to get the DSP values. Checked the values on some guys on TGP and we got very close results, so we should be close. New is also that the cheat sheet has also been implemented in an MS Excel version where you can make DSP calculations and make customized print of the cheat sheet. It's limited to Microsoft version as it contains micros. Here’s the links for both downloads. • PDF version - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ounfwbqce53r57n/Line6%20Helix-Model%20and%20DSP%20Summary%2C%203%2C60b.pdf?dl=0 • Excel version - https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/uhrbdms3jmkpm8k1imy0l/Line6-Helix-Model-and-DSP-Summary-3-60b.xlsm?rlkey=3eyd885tqlbv9ftwe1145mcf3&dl=0 Hope it’s its of use… //Per

/Per

You have the answer in post two and three above. And you can’t run the svu-file on its own. It’s the PC+ firmware and need to be downloaded by using Updater. Do this: Download the software from here - https://line6.com/software/, from the dropdown boxes you select “Powercab 112+, “leave as is” and in the last box pick the OS of your client (Win10/Mac or whatever you use). You need the latest version of the Updater (1.27) and Driver (1.97.0.2), PC112+ Firmware 2.00.1 and PC Edit 2.00. If you have eg a Helix and HX Edit installed you already have Updater and drivers on you system. Install Updater and Drivers if it’s not already on your system. Install PC Edit. Connect your PC/MAC to your PC+ via a USB A/B cable. Prefer not to make the connection until Updater and PC Edit are installed. Be sure that only Updater is running (You will most likely fail if PC Edit is running). I actually would close all running app’s before using Updater to be sure nothing interacts. With the PC+ turned on you will see the connection in Updater. In Updater select the svu-file you just downloaded and start the update. Follow instruction. When finished reboot your PC+, close Updater and start PC Edit. Ready to have fun…

Not sure I can help all the way, but let’s try… I have been running my Helix LT and PC112+ via L6-Link for 3 years now and it works well. It has some “behaviors” but in the whole picture OK. I mainly control both units via my PC (HX Edit, to control Helix and PC+ in presets, and PC Edit, to load IR/PC+-config etc.). Guess your main problem is the “ticking sound and sometimes distortion”. I presume you use HX Edit and PC Edit on your PC or MAC. Are all involved units (PC/MAC, Helix and PC212+) on the same power strip? If not try that. If you have anything else powered or connected, disconnect them (power or signal wise) (sound card, mixer… or any kind of lamp’s)? Have you disconnected your USB cables from both Helix and PC212+? If not do so. If you have the possibility, try Helix/PC+ in another power outlet, even if you can, try it in another location. You say “I have been loading some custom IRs into the PC and I have liked the results versus using them in the helix and just using the PC as an FRFR speaker. It is a pain to have to change the settings on the PC every time I switch to a different preset” – I may interpret this wrong, but you know that you can control the PC+ from your HX Edit? If you click on the output block, select it to Digital and click on the PowerCab tab, find picture below. Now you can run it in any mode you want, per preset, with different voicings etc. The only thing you can’t do is to see what positions your IR’s are loaded, you only see the position numbers. To load and see which IR are loaded where you need the PC Edit. One comment on distortion – Maybe it’s connected with the ticking, but it can also be a gain staging problem. First check is the signal input LED, keep in the yellow zoon, occasionally red (maybe not for now until rest is fixed). You may also check the Helix, that nothing is “accumulating” in the signal path or you have blocks that are “non liner”/not the headroom to handle the level in the signal path (eg Transistor Tape delay)(some block has a headroom control, turn it up, eg. Transistor Tape Delay). This means that even if you have the correct output to PC+, the signal path may have a problem. There are many videos on this, eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqesqtuDjzc&ab_channel=JasonSadites and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlWoWMz3Ugo&ab_channel=JasonSadites Hope this may be a clue to a solution. Edit: Sorry, forgot two things – In the Line6 Helix LT v.30 Owner’s Manual, rev D (if you have the “floor” check that manual, probably similar pages) Level meters in the Helix – On page 44 – Description of the level meters in the Helix, both input and output blocks. PowerCab+ with Helix – Page 27/28. Description of all the output block parameters to control the PC+ from Helix and HX Edit. In Global Setting under Ins/Outs, last choice on 2’nd page, check the digital out level sent from Helix. Mine is set to +2 db, I think it’s the default value… Just in case…

As Silverhead says... and here is some numbers thats in the design rules and will gray out some choices. Per path limit Amp - Max 2x in path CAB - Max 2x single/1x double IR - Max 2x 1024/1x 2048 Poly - Max 1x per path Per preset limit Looper - 1x total Blocks - 16x per path Edit: Here is a distillation of information, including the DSP values for amp's, cab's and effects. Most of the DSP values come from Ben Vesco's site (except the latest ones for 3.60 which I have tested). The rest of the information comes from various sources - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ounfwbqce53r57n/Line6 Helix-Model and DSP Summary%2C 3%2C60b.pdf?dl=0. //Per

So, made an update to my Cheat Sheet with the nice stuff from the 3.60 update. If anyone is interested in a quick sheet and/or a DSP-calculator for the Helix and Stomp models. There are two different downloads – One in pdf-format, which is more of a collection of information from different sources. The other download is an MS Excel document including the information in the pdf-sheet (in the second tab) together with a DSP calculator (in the first tab). The info in the first tab is used to test ideas and to see if a configuration is allowed in a preset, including error handling (design check) and DSP information. The information in the second tab allows you to print the pdf format document in your format of choice (default is the same as the pdf-download). Some notes The DSP values comes from Ben Vesco’s site, except the ones from 3.60. Those are mine that I tested out myself using Ben’s method. I did correlate some of the DSP values on TGP and we came more or less to the same result, so it has to be true :-). Will check the values when Ben makes an update. The Dark Dove Fuzz – I checked the schematic and the spec (manual) of the fuzz and it’s stated to be 130k in impedance. On TGP I got the info that the Helix model is 1M (was measured). I tried the Fuzz and have the same problem with this on as I have with the other fuzz's, and it doesn’t sound anything like the demos I’ve heard. Probably me doing something wrong (run wireless and have two buffered Boss pedal between the guitar and my Helix, so no pic-up load available…), will do some more testing. You can restore your user IR’s safely. The IR’s for the new cabs is in the L6 software and control. The IR slot’s are your user space and for you to decide what to do with. You probably know, but in case – When doing the 3.60 upgrade and follow the instructions, you will after the upgrade be asked to do a factory restore (FS 9+10+power up), that will wipe all your custom settings, preset and IR’s. In this process you will get the new factory presets (think it’s only Factory 1 that are affected) but if you want to keep the new Factory presets you need to deselect the Factory presets in HX Edit/restore from your backup, otherwise restore will read back the ones that you backed up in the beginning of the upgrade procedure. In the same process your IR and presets will be restored int you Helix.

I have a Helix LT and PC+112 using L6 Link in between the two. My comment regarding this combo and fw 3.50 is what amsdenj say, Flat:FRFR mode:voicing. That’s what the cab’s in fw 3.50 are made for and that’s my starting point. The new cab’s where a real gamechanger for me, so much better/clearer/dynamic. I think I will be able to find some “standard speaker combos” in 3.50 I can tweak and store as my favorites and from there make the final adjustments. Less choices and more focus to get the tone. I’m close. I have used some IR earlier but wasn’t very lucky with them, too many options. Have a few I use in some presets (in the Helix using Flat:FRFR mode:voicing). Have a few presets loaded in the PC but IR’s in the PC doesn’t add anything for me, more than a more complicated workflow (due to the integration between PC and Helix you can’t see the IR names or if it’s actually an IR in the position and the PC+ doesn’t convert IR’s to the correct format as the Helix do, witch made using IR’s a real pain). Easier to have the “whole package” done in the Helix and send it to PC+… The speaker sim (Speaker Mode) in PC+, well I get better tone from fw 3.50 cabs/FRFR to be honest. Guess it’s a matter of personal preferences… Had some luck with Brown and Green speakers but nothing I jumped over the table for :-). I guess if you want the amp in the room and put some work in the preset to match amp and speakers you can get the sound you like but see the speakers as sound examples/starting point, the perfect match can be something else… Eg I didn’t dial in a EVH tone when I picked the Brown speaker (think I played with a fender Bassman amp…). Anyway, test it you never know... If they sound like the brand/model they emulate, have no clue. I picked and tweaked and used the brand name/model as a starting point. This could be because it was a long time since I played a real amp (before the first POD), so maybe I have been converted to a studio rat… But to come back to the other suggestion from amsdenj, he mentioned this in an earlier thread to me, Flat:LF RAW with no cab blocks in the preset. That is really cool, really worth trying. But remember the key is no cab block in the Helix preset (same as you do in Speaker Mode), because that was the mistake I did first time testing it… (was fooled that it was FRFR Mode, and maybe that was the thought from the beginning, but the amsdenj way sound much better). Let the PC+ speaker shine there. In my fw 3.50-presets I still add some EQ to touch things up. Almost always a parametric EQ at the end of the chain making a hi/low cut and “corrections” of some fq’s. Some cases add a Tilt or a Shelf after the cab (not so often with the 3.50 cabs) and in other cases an EQ between amp and cab (almost always use separate amp/cab blocks so I can do that without having to retweak the amp/cab settings when separating them) (typically use the 10 band graph or Cali Q eq’s). I’m a clean/od/low gain blues player so my presets are not that complicated, but still want it to sound good/pleasant in band content… Sorry for a long post. Hope some of it is of use. //Per

They did a survey about a year ago and I had mixed feelings about it then and the same this time. I bought my PC 112+ about 2½ years ago, so it’s not a “new buy survey”, they are checking the market with exiting users. If it’s a mkII, checking to make an upgrade to existing or even if there are an interest for this type of product on the market at all, no clue… My thoughts after answering the survey (now and the previous survey) were “they missed the point by not asking the correct questions”. Not even a text field to make a comment/describe my “wish list”/concerns/needs. In this format I can tell what I use, not the same that I’m happy with it. Can’t see how the survey will improve my use case… But I don’t mind being surprised. //Per

The DSP data are from Ben Vesco's web site and I have given him and others cred's for theire fantastic work. It's in page 11 in the pdf. This document is a print from the Excel sheet, so the same is in there. I notist that the text in the blue headline where missing... "Who made this possible...". Wiĺ correct this in a future update. /Per
