  1. Perhaps use a volume control FX set to 0% and turn it on/off with one of he foot switches.
  2. And if you do select a cab and want the mic sims OFF, use one of the ribbon mics. Those have a very wide & flat frequency response and will be as close to OFF as you'll get. That being said, ANY cab model you pick will have way more effect on your sound than mic choices (not saying they're negligible, just that they have less variation mic-to-mic than the various cabs have).
  3. It is my understanding the mic sims are only ON when you select a cab.
  4. Another disadvantage I forgot about: the weak USB connector. I had to replace mine on the HD500. Did they fix this on the HD500x?
  5. +1 to the optical output. I forgot that one. Another of my favorite disappointments.
  6. Sorry about the missing PDF. it's too big to upload here. I'll have to get it here instead.
  7. Disadvantage - 1) no indicator of digital clipping. This should be a FX block that you can move around to see where/if digital clipping is occurring after any of the other FX blocks. 2) patch switch time is ~5msec, which is clearly audible each time I've tried it. It's made me go to FS1-8 mode, which is more limiting. ABCD just takes too long. 3) give me some time, I'll think of some more. Still, I wouldn't give up on this unit for anything. Beats lugging around all the equivalent equipment I'd need.
  8. You'll need a special one that only goes to 10K ohms (iirc), which most (if not all) don't. It's not your normal volume pedal. I'd just go ahead and buy the Mission Line 6 pedal and be done with it. It works. It's sturdy. I do not work for them.
  9. Hurg, I agree. Yes, there's a difference between Global EQ on/off but I doubt anyone can hear.
  10. I measured the frequency response of my HD500 with the Global EQ turned On and Off and there is a difference as suggested by Rewolf48 above. It's exactly as he said. I updated the zip file of plots as well as included the new plot here.
  11. Oh, right. I see. Yes a Global EQ equivalent FX would be more powerful and potentially replace the Parametric EQ.
  12. Yes, undoubtedly I'll get around to measuring the new amps as well.
  13. The Parametric EQ basically does the same thing as the Global EQ (except the readings are in %). It should satisfy what many of you are discussing (except for the readings are in %).
  14. Hurghanico, For you, I will do it. You just want a blank patch with the Global EQ at default settings and then make 2 measurements: Global EQ on/off, right? Please note that I'm just doing steady-state sinewave frequency responses. No dynamics effects (e.g., compression) will be seen.I doubt there are any but if you're hearing a difference then perhaps something like that is going on.
  15. The remaining plots are in here. Aaargh! I can't upload anymore. You'll have to download the whole shebang here from Dropbox. Sorry...
  16. I took my HD500 in after upgrading it to 2.62 and measured the frequency responses of the Global EQ. I used an Audio Precision to generate a 100mV RMS signal into the Guitar input (set to Normal) and listen to the SPDIF output. I used a blank patch and panned Paths A/B to full L/R, respectively. Things aren't nearly as interesting as the FX EQs (plotted here for reference) because there are no % labels. Line 6 properly labeled the actual filter parameters and, based on my measurements, they did a pretty good job of getting them right. L/R balance is perfect. No surprises, although my measured Q was x2 what their label says. Not a big deal in my book. Still, attached here are half the graphs. Due to upload filesize limits I had to spread the plots out over two messages. The rest of the plots follow below.

    AUX input

I've been able to use Aux In and Guitar In, so the functionality is there. Perhaps it's a mixer setting? Using Path A = Guitar In panned Left and Path B = Aux In panned right should get you two independent signal paths. Try using no FX or amps to start with and set the mixer so both paths are panned to the center. Plug the guitar into Guitar In. Do you get an output? Now plug the same guitar into the Aux In. Do you get an output? Also, get onto the custom tone webpage and find one that uses voice & guitar. Change the Mic input to Aux input and try that.
  18. Yes, Google 'white noise generator" and you'll find several you can use. Paul
  19. Oh. That explains it. Thanks.
  20. I'm even a bigger idiot. I upgraded my HD500, Edit, Line Monkey, etc. Where in the world do I find the Global EQ?
  21. Optimized code? I wonder if the fixed the L/R mismatch in the high frequency portion of the 4 Band Shift EQ. I'll have to check it and see.
  22. I had the exact same problem. What the heck is this? It started me off on a project to measure the frequency response of ALL the EQs available in the HD500. You can find plots here. Hopefully it'll answer your question on what it is (but not how to use it).
  23. Sounds like I need to update my HD500 and take it back into the lab to measure Global EQ to see exactly what it's doing. This weekend would be a good time for that.

    Pre Amps

Yes, that was the point of my reply. They are a whole 'nother set of sounds you have access to. Many behave quite a bit differently that their full model counterparts. Don't treat them like preamps. Treat them as another way of getting the tone you seek.
