  1. That's what I like to use, too. The delay for patch changes 1-4 is just too long for me. I use FS1-8.
  2. You could probably shoehorn in many different USB connectors but the one in the link above has the same footprint as the original and will solder right into the HD300 PCB. There are probably others that will do the same. There are others that will fit the USB cable (since that's standard) but will have different PCB connections. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to open the old printer to see if it might fit.
  3. If you're good with soldering you can replace the USB connector, which is notorious for breaking. This one works as a great replacement!
  4. But you can stick your mp3 into the Aux input. That will come out S/PDIF. You may have to use a few FX gain blocks to boost the signal, though. You'll need to rout it thru path B and your guitar thru path A to keep the two signals and FX separate.
  5. Be sure the input settings on your HD500 are set to Guitar/Variax. The default is Guitar/same which may be overdriving the input stages on the HD500. That's what fixed it for me.
  6. Agreed. I consider a guitar a "lo-fi" type of signal with all the hum, pick noises, buzzing, etc going on. The data converters in the HD500 are plenty good enough for guitar. I wouldn't upgrade just for this.
  7. Funny. I get the complete opposite of some of the advice here. When I setup a patch on headphones and then move into the gig and running thru a PA, I almost always have to ADD more delay and overdrive/distortion to get the tone back that I like. Otherwise, they get lost in what else is going on. Reverb, yes, this can usually be dropped back some since the room usually adds a lot.
  8. Do you get the buzz when nothing is plugged in?
  9. The HD500 Advanced Guide also shows the AC Flanger as not having the Mix control, so the answer above is probably right.
  10. Does the noise go away when you unplug the guitar? Does the noise go away when you turn the volume all the way down on the guitar? Does the noise go away when the HD is disconnected from a computer? Select your 2 inputs as Guitar/Variax. The default is Guitar/Same which adds noise.
  11. I also use the SPDIF output into an external sound card. That way I get ALL my signals from the sound card and makes things a little easier for me.
  12. Well, they're used that way here but it's not always so clear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phone_connector_(audio)) so this is actually a good question.
  13. How about plugging in a mono 1/4" jack into unbalanced right output (going no where) and another mono 1/4" into the left going to your amp? Wouldn't that keep the left & right separate so you can still use the stereo XLR outputs?
  14. That being said, I have used only the Left XLR output many, many times and have noticed nothing funny. But my signal path is fairly straight forward. Plus, I use the mixer with everything panned center.
  15. I sometimes use the Octo reverb 100% wet to get some ambient pad sounds.

    Which Pod?

I think you'll be happier with a used HD500 (cheaper than the HD500X) over the X3. I believe they've fixed much of the "digital-ness" with the HD series. There is a substantial difference between them from my understanding (I have never used the X3).
  17. I fixed this by changing the two inputs to Guitar and Variax. I have no Variax so this setting basically turns off that input. I believe the default is Guitar and Same which, in effect, doubles the input signal hitting the first FX/Amp block. This was overdriving the Pod and caused all sorts of nastiness.
  18. I measured the gains of the various inputs and outputs and recorded the results here: http://line6.com/support/topic/848-gain-line-up-measurements/?hl=pfsmith0&do=findComment&comment=4669 The Aux input should have the same gain as Guitar Normal. Guitar PAD adds about 6dB of loss at the Guitar In jack. The other differences between Guitar In and Aux is 1) the tuner is only available at Guitar In, and 2) the input impedance of Guitar In is programmable while Aux is 1M ohm. I've seen no other differences between these two. I assume you plug the guitar into Guitar In and then Aux without changing anything else and you're noticing a difference, right? Ideas are: 1) make sure the Guitar In switch is set to Normal 2) make sure the Input Impedance is set to global 1M If you still hear a difference then perhaps the unit is defective. I can't think of anything else to do.
  19. Better? My preferred outputs are (in order of preference): SPDIF: only go thru the data converters once as they're the biggest source of signal corruption. XLR: gain is cheap but balanced shielding is not. I'm happy to use a lower signal level to get less noise, interference, and ground loops issues. 1/4": when all else fails, I can always use 1/4".
  20. I've covered this in my measurements located here. The XLR outputs are about 10dB lower than the 1/4" outputs.
  21. Wouldn't putting a mono FX as the last block make Left = Right?
  22. Yep! I agree. But you now know that 1500 Hz is about 62%.
  23. I cannot remember exactly, but the display may be connected to the motherboard thru a ribbon cable. Perhaps it's as simple as the cable falling out of the connector. I did a quick search on opening the HD500 but couldn't find it but somewhere around here is a video showing how to open it. I mean, it's out of warranty anyway, right? It's not difficult (I've had to replace the USB jack) but just watch out for the spring-loaded foot switches. Try Googling on how to open the HD500.
  24. Rewolf48 - I didn't realize that! I'll try that out. Thanks!
