Need help with live setting - sound not cutting through
cruisinon2 replied to watch4king's topic in Helix
Mids...if you're setting up your patches with headphones, or through a similar (or even the very same PA) rig, but at lower volumes, you'll almost always have issues trying to use those same tones at stage volume. When you get loud, the lows and highs become more prominent, the mids disappear, and your guitar vanishes from the mix. You need to tweak your patches as close to stage volume as you can. Having a sound guy that doesn't know what he's doing isn't gonna help either... -
JTV-89F piezon does not work properly
cruisinon2 replied to dustinjmoroz's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Piezo outputs vary. That's why Workbench allows you to adjust the levels of each string individually, on a per model basis, as well as globally. Though personally, I find the global string volume to be of little use, as some models have more of a disparity than others. What works for the LP models probably won't for the Strat. Pretty much everyone has a bunch of tweaking to do initially to get string-to-string volumes leveled out.- 4 replies

Agreed...but that's a whole other discussion, and I didn't have the strength this morning, lol. Figured it best to steer him away from what is likely an under powered amp for a completely diffrent application first.

The connections are nothing mysterious. Guitar--->HD--->power amp--->cabinet. I found a manual for that power amp online, and there are 1/4" outs, so there's no problem there. However at 75W per side, this thing is clearly designed for powering a pair of small near field monitors, not a 4x12 cabinet, as it also has connections (RCA? hard to tell from the picture in the manual) specific to some model of Samson monitors that they obviously intended you to use with it. The manual claims a 4 ohm impedance rating. You'll have to check your cabinet and see what it's rated at. Anything higher than 4 ohms, and you'll be losing power...and at 75 W per channel, it's already likely to be seriously under-powered for a 4x12 cabinet. What were you using to drive it before? EDIT: I took another look...you can run it in bridged mono @ 8ohms, so that'll give you more juice. Might work ok, just depends on the impedance of your cabinet. Still not really designed for a guitar rig, though...no telling if it'll give you enough power to be heard over a drummer until you give it a shot. The claimed wattage on spec sheets is often "peak" power, rather than RMS (continuous) power, and thus is not always a good indicator of how loud the thing can actually get.

What's this "reading" you speak of? ;)

Ibanez neck on a JTV 69 HSS
cruisinon2 replied to roscoe5's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Extraordinarily unlikely to work. Even if you can shoehorn it in there (which is a longshot...the heel dimensions are not the same as a Strat) I'll bet you the price of a nice Warmoth replacement that there will be scale issues, and the intonation will never be right. Check out Warmoth's "wizard" profile necks...they're pretty slim. Probably not quite as razor-thin as some of the shred-mobiles that Ibanez makes, but it'll get you in the ballpark. Lord knows anything is better than the stock neck on these things. -
What you're describing may be the dreaded "fan rattle". It's a known problem on the L2T's...something about the original design of the fan assembly causes it to rattle with certain frequencies at louder volumes. If that's what's going on, it needs to be replaced, cause it ain't gonna get better, and it's got nothing to do with the guitar. Open a service ticket and they'll tell you where to take the amp. I had the same problem...took two tries for the repair to stick, but it's fine now.

For those of you that have wondered about that Friedman ASM-12..

No, but I have straddled my share of bikes that are street legal, but probably shouldn't be...so I hear ya! -

This really isn't directed at you per se, I just wish someone could explain to me how this phrase came to be used to distinguish what a guitar cabinet does from any other speaker in the universe. They all push air...that's how sound travels. Yes, the frequency responses differ...but give me a speaker that doesn't push air, and I'll need a sign language interpreter at my next gig. ;) -
Ongoing them. Users of older Variax versions seem to be disappointed with the new models, more often than not. The models themselves are fundamentally different in the older firmware versions you're used to...unless something is actually malfunctioning that an update might remedy, the latest firmware isn't likely to change your opinion much.

If you're actually playing to a sea of writhing humanity, packed in like sardines and stretching to the horizon, then you're already paying someone else to worry about that crap for you. Show up, play the tunes, find tonight's wife, and get back on the bus... And if you're playing to 17 binge drinkers down at Paddy's Dry Heave (where the homeless drink free on Tuesdays), then a rig that "professional" won't fit through the door anyway. ;)

Newbie Here. Is there a spot for Korn patches here ?
cruisinon2 replied to xSUITTOx's topic in POD HD
Search a dumpster...better chance than Customtone. -
That's exactly what this entire thread is about. The reasons area always the same, no matter what headphones you're using. There are numerous other "why does my Helix sound like crap?" threads, too...it's been discussed ad nauseum lately. Take a week off from work and start reading.

At the end of the day, if it works and you're happy with the results, then who cares how you get there? I'd smear peanut butter on the speaker cones if I thought it would help...;)

Ouch... If I still have to think, then what am I doing with this smartphone? Perhaps I could order "awesome tone" from Amazon... ;)

OK, now I'm lost. Whom are we blaming now? Apple? L6? John Deere? (you call that a tractor?). I thought we had established that this was all Line 6's fault...totally confused about who I'm supposed to hate now, and there's nothing worse than misdirected righteous indignation. It's like swinging at a piñata...sometimes you end up cracking somebody over the head who didn't deserve it. ;)

The question is, why? ;)
