I'm surprised nobody has brought up the old model knob shim "fix"...it's the longest running model knob malfunction. The switch probably isn't engaging anything.

New 89F Won't Stay in Tune
cruisinon2 replied to pearlfukinjam's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Strings on a new guitar, invariably have not been adequately stretched when it's shipped...never fails. Tune each string to pitch, then yank the daylights out of it and re-tune. Repeat until no matter how much you pull on it, it no longer goes out of tune. It's either 5 minutes of that, or playing on it for a week, constantly tuning until they stretch on their own. -
A tube amp and headphones are worlds apart in terms of frequency response...that's why they sound nothing alike, and there's nothing you can do about that. If you want your patches to sound the same at home, then you need to be listening through a similar amp, end of story. No set of headphones will ever sound like your tube amp. However, if cost-effectiveness is the goal, then just create a separate set of patches for use with headphones. It'll require some time, and EQing things a bit differently, but it won't cost you a dime.

As with the overwhelming majority of things discussed around here, the answer to this question is entirely subjective. Might as well be asking for advice on broccoli vs. cauliflower with tonight's chicken cutlet. You like what you like, what I like is irrelevant, and neither of us is "right" anyway... You're never gonna know what either of them will sound like until you plug it in and let her rip...and nobody can tell you ahead of time what will sound good to your ears.

Who's ear(s), though? Frankly, the possibility of having to endure threads where we debate the relative merits of the "Pavarotti" ear model vs. "Paul McCartney", or Dr. Dre vs. Eminem...is too depressing to contemplate. ;)

Not a lot of Facebook fans around here...perhaps there's hope for humanity after all. ;)

What's the over/under on how long it will take for the first firmware-related whining to begin? ;)
-
Yeah...it has an "outside" and everything. ;)

Oh you're definitely not alone. If it were the only way out, I'd gleefully pay money to NOT be on Facebook....I figure Facebook user ID's will eventually be issued at birth, just like your SS#...;)

Communist...;)

Only if you're under 30 with a degree in one of the "nothing is ever anybody's fault" social engineering, pseudo-disciplines that we've invented do "educate" today's existential misanthropes...;) "Safe spaces" are over that way, just beyond the Crying Pavilion...;)

It should, but it doesn't. At least it never has on mine. It sends the changes I make, but nothing is actually saved to the POD itself unless I do it manually. The little asterisk on the display stays there until I hit "save". Been like that since day one, through various firmware updates and resets...so if that ain't the way it's designed, then mine's been busted for 3 or 4 years now. Oh well...

Solid state power is solid state power. Both of those seem to be designed more for PA use, as opposed to a guitar rig, so they're likely gonna deliver fairly clean power that won't color your tone much one way or the other. In terms of what it will actually sound like, I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference blindfolded. The only questions are how much juice do you actually need, can you run them in bridge mono, and do they have selectable impedance so you can match it to your cabinet? etc...

The prescription for just about any sort of weirdness such as you describe is always the same: back up your patches and do a factory reset. It's really the only thing you can do on your own. If that doesn't solve it, it's service time.

We should just skip to the end....eventually everything will be an Amazon subsidiary. ;)

Lol...while it's been updated for the digital age, this is hardly a new phenomenon. With a good enough sales pitch, snazzy packaging, and the occasional "sale", one could successfully market laminated rat turds. People will buy anything. "Pet Rock", anyone? ;)

You guys realize you're all replying to posts that are 3+ years old, right? Necro-thread...

Well hallelujah! At least that's settled. It's been at least a week since a new "WHEN'S IT COMING?!?! WHEN'S IT COMING?!?!?" thread appeared...the other 75 were clearly insufficient. ;)

You don't need to spend anything close to $1K...AKG K701's can be had all day long for about $200 on eBay or Amazon, and are excellent. The K240S model are also quite good, and will only set you back about 80 bucks. There are plenty of other options in the sub-$300 price range that should suit you just fine as well. Those are just the two pairs I've used the most.

Of course they are. Treble is never the problem in situations like this. You can attenuate the highs with cheese cloth. Low frequency = long wavelengths, which are essentially omni-directional...they go everywhere, which is why it won't matter where you point the front of the amp. The lows are gonna march right through walls, floors, and ceilings, at anything but the lowest of volumes. Headphones...

Realistically, all about an FRFR speaker, EQ, and the Variax. With no amp or cab model in the chain, it's not the POD or Helix that is giving you the acoustic sound. If I'm recording acoustic tones, I go straight into my interface, and use the EQ and FX in the DAW...with studio monitors or headphones, I get results just as good as the L2T. No POD at all.

Well the 12 string models leave a little bit to be desired by themselves. I don't use them, much less with alt tunings. Between the extra 6 strings it has to "create", and adding alt tuning on top of it is WAY too much processing imho, and it sounds very artificial to me. I'm also not a Helix guy...so I can't help you there. Initially the OP said he was running the HD 500...I have the 500X. I use no amp model, a little reverb, and usually just the graphic EQ, seasoned to taste. Very simple patches for my acoustic stuff. You could also just run it straight to the L2T in "acoustic guitar" mode, and skip the POD altogether. I've done that too.
