You can't A/B them with one feeding into the other...it'll never work. Whichever one is first in the chain will have its tone significantly altered by the one that follows it. You could try messing with the 4 cable method, putting one in the other's FX loop, using one for your basic tone and the other for FX, but you're not gonna be able to completely isolate either one while they're joined at the hip. It'll end up being a whole lot of work for very little pay off. I suppose you could do this with a pair of A/B boxes...Guitar into box #1, out to the Boss and the Pod, then out of those into box#2 and into your amp. But it's kind of a waste of time, and it'll cost you money unless you've got 2 of them lying around. It's gonna take you a while to get used to the POD anyway. Constantly comparing it to something else is gonna get old real quick. Besides, why try and replicate the Boss anyway? Your ears will tell you if you like what you're hearing...

It would have to be a real tank of a music stand, otherwise it's gonna be top-heavy...we're talking about items designed to support a few sheets of paper.

What you're proposing is a string of redundancies. Daisy-chaining two modelers/multi-fx units together is a clusterf***. They're both designed to give you an amp tone, plus FX. Pumping one into the other, then running that whole mess into an amp is like trying to wear 3 pairs of shoes...it will look funny, sound funny, and you're gonna roll an ankle. Besides, everything the Boss does, the POD does better anyway. Ditch the Boss, and learn the ins and outs of creating tones with the POD...trying to mate these two things, the kids are gonna be ugly.

Disappointed with VDI cable from Line 6
cruisinon2 replied to watch4king's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yeah, they got balls charging almost 30% of the cost of the item for shipping...nothing's that good. You'd think it weighed 100 lbs. No way it's costing them more than 2 or 3 bucks to ship. -
Ok...who's gonna be the first to claim that they can tell the difference between 0.060" and 0.057" frets (without calipers)? That's less than a millimeter...you'd need fingers with better resolution than half of the CT scanners in clinical use today. ;) One man's "medium" is another's man "jumbo"...

You were issued two of those at birth...;) I envision similar discussions 100 years from now, long after the last driver-operated cars disappear from the roads...somebody will be pining for the "good old days when you had to steer". I have less noise, less maintenance, and less crap to drag around. I couldn't care less that it doesn't sound identical to my old Marshall 4x12... We're all pretty much looking to emulate a certain sound (if not a specific artist(s)), suitable to whatever style of music we're playing. And where did we all first hear those sounds? On somebody's album...and what made those sounds? A guitar, an amp, one or more speakers in a box, and a mic sitting in front of it all. I'm not chasing tones anymore. I have them...can't say that about any other amp/cab or combo I've ever owned. Last thing I want is all this tech and some combo of settings that makes it sound just like the stuff I had 20 years ago.

JTV with POD tuner -- unsteady

Never tried a clip-on strobe...aside from being 5x the price of the cheapo tuners, I imagine it would solve your problem just as well. -
Just alternate the peanut butter with Ramen noodles...you'll be fine. Fat and retaining water, but there are pills for that...HELIX! HELIX! ;)

JTV with POD tuner -- unsteady
cruisinon2 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
If it's behaving differently at home, perhaps the power is sh*tty at the gig/rehearsal space, etc, and the tuner has a fit as a result...just guessing, who knows? Electronics do weird things when it suits them... Snark...or a reasonable substitute if you don't wanna be seen with one...Nine bucks. Problem solved. Leave it on the headstock, or not. Half the time I forget it's there...though unless you have the stage presence of one of those giant Easter Island heads, it's probably gonna fall off at some point. -
Help!! My NEW pod hd500x adds harmonics to the outputs
cruisinon2 replied to eitankosman's topic in POD HD
It's kinda hard to pick out much of anything with an example that short...the only thing I can hear is that the first chord you hit seemed to be clipping a bit, and does almost sound like there's a slap-back delay, but again it's one chord ringing for a second, if even that...hard to tell. The second one is certainly at a lower volume, and you can hear the noise gate closing...but I'm not hearing a delay there. Doesn't seem to be anything grossly abnormal on the second example. Phones output is probably not the best choice for direct recording... -

I've been using a clip-on tuner in noisy bars for years. Never had trouble getting in tune. -
JTV 59 string guages
cruisinon2 replied to Allan66's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The only way I can see the string gauge causing problems is if you change gauges and don't set up the guitar properly, resulting in fret-buzz, intonation issues, etc. I put 11's on mine straight out of the box, almost without playing a note...yes, I fiddled with it enough to know that the thing worked of course, but 3 minutes later, the 10's were gone. Never caused any problems. -
Create tuning patch or model
cruisinon2 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Or just get a clip on tuner...even the Snark tuners that everybody loves to make fun of work just fine for quick-tuning between songs. This one of life's rare problems that has a perfectly workable $9 solution...run with it. I wouldn't try putting a tuner in the FX loop. One, it chews up an FX block. And two, the FX loop on the POD is very noisy. You're just trading one problem for another. -

I'm sure there's a question in there somewhere, but damned if I can find it... -
Lol...well its not as if your local bureau of weights and measures is running around standardizing fret wire measurements anyway. There are a ton of different sizes, differing by millimeters, or a fraction thereof...depends on where you're buying the stuff. "Jumbo" doesn't really mean much beyond "its bigger than some of the other stuff we've got laying around". And, if the work is done correctly, some meat comes off with the initial dressing anyway...so whatever it measures while it's still on the spool is gonna be slightly different than properly finished fretwork. That of course assumes they're not just pressed in by a factory drone and sent out the door...some of the stuff I've seen makes you wonder (I mean on mass produced guitars in general. Sh*tty fretwork is a worldwide contagion). And while we're talking frets...everyone should play on stainless frets at least once. You'll never want to go back to nickle-silver, and you'll probably drop dead before you need new frets. Best thing I've ever invested in is converting all my guitars to stainless...

How many models of the JTV 69 are there?
cruisinon2 replied to Gkf9's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Who makes the best cheese cloth? It's all subjective...either way, it's basically a Strat, the only difference being the bridge pickup. Besides, if you're interested in the guitar, I assume it's the modeling and/or alt tunings you're after, in which case you won't be using the mags pickups anyway. They're really just there so that it's still a functional guitar if the fancy electronics crap out on you, or the battery dies, you can still finish the set with a working instrument. -

The "s" has 3 single coil mags. The other one is HSS. -
Another question to consider is what are you gonna do with the rig? Stereo FX are great for recording, or even just goofing around unaccompanied, but if you're playing live, trying to run in stereo is usually a clusterf***. The one guy who's standing dead center between your speakers will be the only one hearing all the nifty stereo FX...it's gonna sound weird everywhere else in the room.

Am I the only one having these problems??
cruisinon2 replied to ricoustic101's topic in Variax Standard
Fair enough, but I still think that the mags blending is a longshot, unless you had been set one or more models up that way. Try and get Workbench up and running and check it out, but I don't see that happening on its own. If that ain't it, something weirder is going on...these guitars are full of "weird".- 7 replies

Check the AMP/LINE switch by the expression pedal. You want it set to "Line". "Amp" would be used if you were running the POD straight into your amp's input, which is expecting a low-level instrument signal.

cruisinon2 replied to ricoustic101's topic in Variax Standard
I doubt that you've got the mags blended with the models anyway. Yes, it is an option, but one that you would have had to set up that way deliberately. It's unlikely that it just happened by itself, though I suppose anything is possible. The so called "ghost notes" that you're describing have been complained about for years with the JTV's. Nobody ever wants to believe it, but sometimes it's nothing more than hearing the actual pitch acoustically, along with the alt tuning coming from your amp, especially at lower volumes. It's happened to me, and I was incredulous too at first, but that's what was going on. Try recording something straight to a DAW (NOT mic-ing the amp) with an alt tuning, and listen to the playback. If you don't hear both tones that way, then you're hearing the guitar itself as you play, with the alt tuning on top...it creates a dissonant mess, (especially at close intervals like 1/2 step down) and is more common than you'd think.- 7 replies
