JTV-69 Open Back Plate
cruisinon2 replied to Jubzz's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Oh yeah, I forgot about this. We were all under that impression. This is an example of "sensitive info" that they're not gonna part with. You see, if you actually knew when your guitar was made, somehow that will curve your spine, and make the Allies lose the war...;) -
You're difficulties are very common when making the move to modeling. I was never been able to get a decent tone without the cabinet modeling either. And while it might seem redundant to run a cab sim through a power amp and cabinet, it absolutely can be done with good results. There's no quick fix though. You'll need to spend lots of time...hours, days...experimenting with what combination of amp/cab/mic models will work best with your rig. It won't necessity be an "obvious" combo. And unfortunately, other's experiences won't help you much (and might just send you down one blind alley after another), as every rig is different. What you might want to consider is going with an FRFR speaker instead of your amp. They're smaller, lighter, and they really allow you to take full advantage of units like Helix.

That's kinda what I figured...they guitars were made a month apart. I'll bet they use the different backplates interchangeably. -
How is anyone else supposed to "see" your mixer clipping? You can make any patch clip on any mixer in the universe. Adjust accordingly.

Tweak patches via headphones or powered speaker
cruisinon2 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
It depends a lot on the headphones in question. Some have a flatter response than others. But, unless you're cranking that powered speaker to stage volume, it probably won't matter much anyway. A powered speaker at comfy bedroom volume isn't likely to match your cranked stage tone any more than headphones will. -
Lol...seriously, volume so DOES NOT make you sound better. One of the best live shows I've ever seen was Dream Theater @ Irving Plaza in NYC, probably 16 or 17 years ago now. They did a stripped down version of their usual stage set-up, still plugged in (at least the good Lord has delivered us from the "Unplugged" concept ;)) but a smaller drum kit, everybody out in front, using maybe half the stage. And most notably, they weren't trying to blast the audience into next week. When everybody isn't fighting for the extra 3dB they need to be audible, it's easier to get a good mix.

If you had a pair of them, running a true stereo rig is easy, though in my experience this is a mess live. They're designed to be networked, so all you would need is one L6 Link cable from the Helix, and a second one between the L2's. No messing about with L and R outputs. They also have an accelerometer, so it knows of you're laying it on the floor as a monitor, and it will adjust the output mode accordingly to account for the bass coupling the often happens when you put a speaker on the floor. It's got an onboard mixer, so if you wanted to run a vocal and acoustic through it for a small gig, you've got that option. How much, if any of that stuff matters to you depends on how you're using them.

Selling my JTV 59

Lol...that's nearly 2 Strats. We're they sticking lead blocks in them back then? Craziness. -
Do I like the gap? No...but it's not the Matterhorn. There are plenty of ways to camouflage the changes. Dual amp patches, using the expression pedal to smoothly transition from one tone to the other should take care of 90% of these issues. So many amp and fx parameters can be assigned to the expression pedal, I rarely need to switch patches mid-song anymore. And has been noted already, virtually every modeler on the market will suffer from this problem to some degree...work with what you've got.

Selling my JTV 59

Depends on where's you buy your sugar, I guess. Most of today's LP's weigh in around 9 lbs...after an hour on stage, that's heavy, if you ask me. Back in the 70's they were even worse. 12 lbs was not unusual. I just wanna play a few tunes, not tie up the QE2... I've got a couple of Strats that are in the 7-8 lb range. Much more manageable. -
They deleted it? Lol...nannies

JTV-69 Open Back Plate
cruisinon2 replied to Jubzz's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
By sticking a Philips head screwdriver through the slot. It's not supernatural. I've done it numerous times, on this guitar, and others with the same style backplate. Is it a deal breaker? No. Would I buy, or not buy a guitar based on what the tremelo backplate looks like? No. But that doesn't mean that there is no difference between them, and that was the question that was asked. So with that in mind, why remove and replace 6 screws if you don't have to? It just makes a 4 second job take 5 minutes. -
JTV-89F and HD500x

+1...FRFR is pretty much a necessity if you want acoustic tones that are anything close to convincing. Trying to pump them through a traditional guitar amp is a dead end. The necessary frequency response just isn't there. -

Depends on how much it's going to irritate you to have to remove the backplate entirely when you have to adjust the tension on the tremelo springs. That's what the slots are there for. It's a floating bridge...sooner or later, it will be necessary. -

Well mine is from 2012 and has the slots, but I don't think it's a particularly good yardstick to judge the production date, anyway. Maybe they ran out of the slotted ones that day, who knows? Plus, if the guitar in question is hanging on the wall down at Megalotunes, any of the 16 year old scut-monkeys manning the helm could have swapped it out for reasons unknown. You never know with those places... -
Lol...SHORT FUSES AROUND HERE LATELY. Sorry, I'm hard-of-hearing. ;)

FRFR Discussion (specifically, L2 Stagesource)
cruisinon2 replied to WithALoudNoise's topic in Helix
Hey, either way the thing is awesome. Smallest and best sounding rig I've ever had. I do sometimes miss the "guitar amp look" of a half stack behind me, but then I'll bend over to pick something up, and I remember that my back isn't 25 years old anymore. No regrets, and I ain't going back, lol. -
I doubt it. They tried that already with absurdly priced US JTVs. 4x the price for a guitar with the exact same specs and modeling engine, a few more colors to choose from, a quarter-sawn neck, and a vague promise of more attention to detail? No thanks.
-
Yeah...I sympathize with ya. But sending it in for service is likely a waste of time. They're just gonna tell you they can't reproduce the problem. As much as I love this stuff, the complexity is sometimes it's Achilles heel. "The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to clog the drain" -Capt. Montgomery Scott ;) Good luck.
