So many variables affect sound. How loud the rest of the band is, the room, the number of people in the room, your mood, dead strings etc. all affect tone. The last gig I played the same sounds that had been coming from my monitor for months sounded thin and weak. It was distracting. But when I walked in front of the mains in the middle of the bar it sounded fantastic, so after that I stopped worrying about it. Not to say there may not be something going on with your set-up. Just pointing out that it could be any number of different things.

Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable
Rocco_Crocco replied to joebar23's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I use a Cat 7 between my FBV and Firehawk 1500 and it works fine. I just tested from JTV59 to Helix and it also works. :) -
How's the sustain on your 89F?
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
OMG sometimes I just have to shake my head at myself. I brought the guitar to a tech and within 1 minute of looking at it, he said, "well your pickups look pretty low." He raised the pickups and now its fine. I have adjusted pickup height dozens of times throughout my life, but I didn't even think to look at the PUs on this guitar. No charge, at least. -
Nice guitar. What is it?

Hmmm. I just got home from work and dialed in the saved patch that gave me the issue so I could post it. Now its working fine. Here is the patch anyway. See what happens if you try... https://app.box.com/s/lremiaoxcktd8fqktxkdhv88bfm0v0c6 Maybe turning the unit off and on fixed the glitch.

I am refering to a dual cab block, not 2 independant cab blocks.

How's the sustain on your 89F?
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Loosen the screws 1/2 turn of so, and the tension from the strings sets the neck by pulling it deeper into the pocket, then re-tighten the screws. -
Running 2.20. I am creating a preset with dual cabs. Only the last cab I picked from the cab list is working. I can turn down the volume on the last cab selected and I get silence. If I turn it back up, then go to the other cab and turn down the volume, there is no change in tone or volume. Bug?

How's the sustain on your 89F?

I did the loosen the screws of the neck trick, and it didn't change anything. Dead spot on the neck theory sounds like a good possibility. Man, I have a Luthier nearby who does some really great work, but most on acoustics and vintage stuff. I know guys really dislike working on guitars with Floyds, but I am going to call him tomorrow and ask him to take a look at the guitar. In the meantime, I think I'll Google JTV89F neck replacement. -

It is pretty light for an Epi. When I pick new ones up in the store I am still surprised by how heavy they usually are. I guess the Floyd route removed SOME weight, but still... Regarding set neck vs neck through vs bolt on, I always believed bolt-ons would finish last in the sustain department. Below is an article about the subject. I can tell you from personal experience (as much as anecdotal evidence is worth) that my cheap-lollipop Ibanez RG bolt on guitar absolutely has amazing sustain. My 1984 Yamaha SBG2100 (neck through) doesn't hold a note worth a damn. http://www.cycfi.com/2013/11/sustain-myth-science/ -

You got me curious, so I just turned on the scale... Les Paul 8.6 lbs. 89F 8.1 lbs good sustain priceless :) -

The settings on Workbench check out. If you think of it, the next time you whip out the 89, see how it does and report back, if you don't mind. -
How's the sustain on your 89F?
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
With the guitar in question, the note played on the G string 7th fret completely dies in about 3 second... with high gain and a fairly good amount of compression. Even applying vibrato and "diggin in". Playing a note on the same string at the 2nd fret gives me 5-6 seconds. Much better. That fact that your 89F seems normal is giving me some reassurance that I could get this working up to snuff. I posed this question in the Luthier section of another forum. A couple replies stated that the GraphTech saddles may contributing to the issue. These guys claimed to have experience with GraphTech. Another very well regraded Luthier suggested I try loosening the neck somewhat while it is under tension. I googled that technique and it appears legit. I am going to try it. If that doesn't help, It's going to a Luthier for another opinion. -

Also, it is only the 3 highest strings that are lacking. -
Even with the magnetic pickups, the notes seem to die way too soon on my 89F. Anything below the 5th fret is fine, but above is a no go. For example, my band plays Metallica's version on "Turn the Page". People familiar with that song will remember the little singing lead parts throughout the song (actually played with a slide by Kirk Hammet, but I digress). I could never use my 89F for this song because the notes fade so quickly. Even at high gain with a lot of compression. My Epiphone Les Paul (with a Floyd) sustains much better. It KILLS "Turn the Page". I wonder if replacing the trem block and getting better springs for the 89F would help. I know the block and springs in my aforementioned Epi LP are stock, and that guitar sings. The guitar seems to be set up ok. No buzzing, slight relief @ the 7th fret when 1st and17th frets are fingered, comfy action. Could my problem still be a setup issue? I am curious to hear other 89F owner's thoughts on how they perceive their sustain.

Monitoring inputs in stereo on an interface. Possible?
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
I don't want to have to plug in the Helix to the monitors every time I want to play, which is what I am understanding that I have to do. Is this correct? -
Monitoring inputs in stereo on an interface. Possible?
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
Thanks, guys. I like to play along with MP3s and YouTube on my computer, so I need a mixer. Found this on Craigslist. It should do the trick. https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/6044269675.html -
I like to run the Helix through my PreSonus Audiobox USB interface, and into my monitors. I do this for at home practicing, creating guitar patches, etc. I am not going through a DAW or anything. I run 1/4" L and R outs from my Helix into the 2 inputs of the Audiobox. The problem is the signal is in mono, and after a bit of research, I discovered the inputs on the Audiobox cannot be monitored in stereo. Is there another affordable interface that will allow me to monitor in stereo?

Helix will not load my saved bundle after 2.20 update
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
Thanks Silverhead. Yes driver and Updater are the proper versions. Any suggestions for fixing the JSON file would of course, be welcome, but I doubt I would be able to interpret the data. I found a setlist with some presets that were the origins of all my main patches, so this would not cost me more than a couple hours of work, thankfully. -
Helix will not load my saved bundle after 2.20 update
Rocco_Crocco replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
Yes I am on Editor v 2.20. I am able to load older bundles, setlists and presets without issue. I am going to assume the bundle file somehow got corrupted when I saved it to my hard drive before the update. I think I am screwed. :( -
I get a message stating "badly formed JSON". Update went without a hitch. I saved the bundle right before beginning the update process. I tried rebooting Helix, still get the same message. This is very very very bad if I can't get this resolved. I need that bundle loaded. Otherwise this will cost me hours of work. I do not want to be a cautionary tale. Any ideas?

One of the EB VPJR volume pedals can be used as an expression pedal. It's one one that has "25k ohm" printed on the front jack plate.
-
I always run mono into my Alto, even though I have 2 inputs.

Its worth the extra effort to rename your IR files in the Helix editor by placing a number in front of the IR name. Add a "1" in front of the IR in slot 1, a "2" in front of the IR in slot 2, etc. Then save the IRs to your hard drive, sort them alpha-numerically, and Bob's your uncle the next time you need to reload your IRs into Helix, as they will be in order.
