Power Amp And Cab Live - Are You Using Pre Or Full Models?
joel_brown replied to NinoScholz's topic in POD HD
I use a PreAmp patch with cab and mic into the power amp of a Marshall and cab for live use. -
And that's what I meant in my earlier post about communication. The Product Managers, or someone who has the ability and authority to speak for the company, should atleast occasionally post on this forum. Of course they don't want to tip their hat and give away any information that may help their competition and I'm sure that's a big part of it. It's one thing for Kemper and Fractal to discuss things more openly. There's not eleventeen differant competitors trying to find out what each other is doing next for under $500 bucks. That's right I said eleventeen... That's means a bunch...

That's a good point. I've been using Line6 products for 10 years and have only been on active on this forum for about the past year. Mostly because I didn't need any help until I bought the PODHD. The previous products were easy to use, not that that was a good thing because the PODHD is a big improvement. I believe Line6 is reading this forum just not responding. I worked for a large software development company that sometimes took a similar approach. Atleast until they realized it was better to communicate with their customers more. Obvious things Line6 should fix: 1) Better communications with their customers. 2) User Installable Impulse Response Support (I've joined that bandwagon) 3) Global EQ

I just listened to this video. I could hardly tell any differance. I think that was the point of the video. All I know is I applied an IR inside my DAW to my PODHD that was already recorded, which had CAB and Mic emulation turned on. I tried out a few IRs inside of the Poulin plugin. When I finally found the IR I liked it made a big improvement. Was this the right way or intended way to do this ?. I don't care and it doesn't matter. Whatever makes it sound better is right. Back to what I was orginally trying to get accross with this thread. PODHD customers should try the Poulin CAB plugin or any plugin that allows user installable IRs and see what a differance it makes. First new (good sounding) modeler that has user installable IRs for under $700 bucks gets my next purchase. I just hope Line6 is hearing this.
-
In my case I was thinking of PODHD into Torpedo CAB. That way I get the PODHD with whatever IRs I want to use. At that point I'd have a $1000 into it. Still less than AXE Ultra but I've seen AXE FX II for $1000 on eBay. But I can always use the Torpedo with anything I buy in the future.
-
I'm going to wait and see if Line6 or someone supports user installable IRs in the near future. If nobody does then I may drop the $550 bucks for the Torpedo. Atleast with the Torpedo I'll have the ability to use IRs with any modeler. So if at some point I buy the Kemper, AXE, Digitech, another Line6, whatever.
-
It's hard to believe Line6 would ignore something like user installable IRs. Seems to me this would be a huge selling point for them without a ton of effort. If Digitech does it then I'm sure others will follow.

It's 2013. Why Are User Irs Still Only A Boutique Offering?
joel_brown replied to Rane1's topic in POD HD
I 100% agree. If the new Digitech or Peavey come out with installable IR support I'm dumping Line6. -
That's good to know. Atleast someone has done it for a reasonable price. I hope Line6 is making this a priority. After hearing the differance it makes I'll throw the PODHD away in a heartbeat if Digitech or Peavey come out with an updated modeler that includes installable IRs. I urge anyone who hasn't heard the differance an IR makes to download the Poulin Plugin or any plugin for IRs and check it out. I was real satisfied with the PODHD until I heard it with an IR. Of course finding the right IR takes a little time but there's lot of them to choose from.
-
I download the Poulin Plugin and a handful of IRs and applied them to my recorded PODHD tone. This was an eye opener. Wow, screw any other feature, I want to be able to download and install IRs right into the PODHD for live use. I didn't realize how much of an improvement it was. Plus there are thousands of IRs to choose from. First modeler to do this for under a $700 gets my money.

The 900s dirt/grit does well provided they are biased correctly and the pre amp tubes are changed to something more suited to taste. I didn't like the stock Russian 12ax7s too much. I also prefer Mullard or Ruby EL34s for the power amp section. JJs didn't do it for me at all. I've been very happy with the JCM's sound and have used them that way for years. What I prefer now is the stereo effect I get live from the PODHD, plus with high gain it's damn hard to tell the diiferance. Clean tones I completely agree with you. I think the PODHD lacks in that area, but the high gain stuff I'm very happy with.
-
Actually more and more professionals are using modelers, however most of them are using AXE but in the past for example Megadeth used Line6 or Digitech for their live performances. I've done old school for years and what I don't like is noise. For the almost imperceptible differance in tone, I'd rather have the lower noise plus stereo sound - that's why I have two Marshall JCMs on stage spread apart. However the method I prefer is using the PODHD into the Effect Return of my tube amps. I don't like the sound of the PODHD into a solid state amp at all and would agree it sounds too digital. That's where Impulse Responses (IRs) would really help.
-
I also use Marshall amps, a pair of JCM900s that I spread apart for live stereo effect. I also play hard rock metal. For me the PODHD was a struggle for several months. The Line6 EQ sucks so bad I went out and bought a used dual band EQ, that helped a bunch. There was more than a few times I thought I had wasted my money and was going to get rid of the PODHD. In the end the light bulb finally turned on and I got it working the way I wanted. That's the bad part. The good part is, once I got it kind'a figured out I can't go back to other products that don't have the flexibilty of putting anything anywhere in the signal chain. Also the tone is definetley HD but it's hard to tell until you get it sounding the way you want. If you decide to give it another try (I think you should) then here's a couple things that will hopefully help. I had posted my tone on another thread to help someone else in a similar situation. Here's the links again. I plug my guitar into the PODHD and PODHD into the Effect Returns of my amps. I don't use the 4 Cable Method. Download these two tones and see if it helps point you in the right direction. http://www.childreno...AngelHvyPre.hbe http://www.childreno...olOvrDrvPre.hbe Also check out the meambobo website. Line6 should be paying this guy for all the great info he has on there. Or atleast give him free gear. http://foobazaar.com/podhd/

Even though it's not specific to Line6 it shows off what IRs can do and how to spice up recording. A lot of you may already know this but I thought it would be helpful for the people still learning. It's also somewhat humerous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6PHzkPjH7c

So We're About A Week Out From The Firmware Anniversary Give Or Take...
joel_brown replied to RipperShred's topic in POD HD
Let's just label all the knobs like this: Knob1 Knob2 Knob3 Knob4 Then let's don't really tell you what they do just hint at it a little. Now just use your ears to make it sound right. You know I can drive down the road and look at the sun and tell which general direction I'm going but it's nice to have signs telling me a little more precisely. Line6 failed miserably in their EQs and have a number of other shortcomings that their competition does better. The only thing the competition needs to do is get slightly better than Line6 with the actual amp tone and I think it will hurt. -

I know I'm seriously watching what Digitech does and I'm sure other Line6 customer are too. The PODHD is really good but it's not the new kid on the block anymore. The competition has had time to make improvements. -
Are you comparing the SANSAmp for bass to the PODHD's Flip Top ? I'm talking about guitar on SANSAmp to PODHD guitar tones, especially with regards to high gain.
-
Adjust the compression before the pre-amp in the patch you got from me. That may help some with finding what you need. Also switching it out for the Line6 Tube Screamer effect may help too. And sometimes a little EQ can make a big differance. But definetley goto the foobazaar.com/podhd website. Tons of great info there.

I also used the orginal red bean for years playing hi gain music. It took me a while (months) to figure out how to get the PODHD sounding better too. Download these two tones and see if it helps point you in the right direction. http://www.childrenofthegraveband.com/AngelHvyPre.hbe http://www.childrenofthegraveband.com/SolOvrDrvPre.hbe Also check out the meambobo website. There should be several threads here dicussing how much great information is available on that website.

I'm not trying to get the PODHD to sound like the SANSAmp, I'm looking for anyone who has tried both of them and would like to give an opinion of how they compare with tone.
-
I occasionally see posts about PODHD and how it compares up to Kemper, Digitech, AXE, Boss and so forth. I've never seen anyone mention Tech 21 SansAmp PSA. SANSAmp has been around a very long time and is still selling. I've never tried one but would like to hear if anyone has tried it and how it compares. I know it's a pre-amp only and doesn't have effects but demos I've heard of it sound very nice.

IMO - I think this original post was SPAM.

Same here. It doesn't seem accurate enough for me but ok for quick on-the-fly tuning.
