Check that your motherboard BIOS and Chipset drivers are up to date. Do you have any other USB devices connected to your PC? If so, you might try disconnecting to see if that is to culprit. If it is, try using different ports. Most PCs have two master controllers and ideally you want the POD on it's own master controller. Whenever you have multiple ports on a PC, there will be a built-in USB hub between the ports and the master controller. I don't know of this is the problem, but is one of those things you can eliminate as a cause. Additionally, there are power management settings on USB controllers that can cause problems with some devices...This is more typical on laptops where power management can be conservative...just some guesses for you. Hope you can get things figured out.

The tube pins can become oxidized and you can get some "bug zapper" sounds in the back ground. pull the tubes, clean the pins and the sockets and re-insert them...Just make sure that you do it when the amp is unplugged from AC and you note the sockets the power tubes came from so the bias adjustment stays in check.

....First answer seemed to answer the question pretty well. Nothing more than a poor attempt on my part at a humorous RTFM followup...sorry it hit you so personally.

There was a study recently that revealed that some 90% of millennials think that opening a box a cereal, pouring some in a bowl and adding milk takes too much time...Obviously, if all else fails try reading the instructions. :D

Does the Helix have Bluetooth built in for a possible blue tooth app?
spaceatl replied to Marcpattison's topic in Helix
USB 2.0 has a data transfer rate over 400 mbps...Bluetooth is around 1 to 3 mbps depending on wireless channel conditions (about 2 mbps most of the time)...Bluetooth is VERY VERY slow compared to USB. If you really want wireless, then a WIFI dongle like the M20D has might be what is needed for transfers to be at least on par or better then USB (802.11N or AC)... -
That's a 500K pedal made for a passive guitar. The intended guitar would be one loaded with Humbuckers that has 500K pots in it...A 250K pedal would be more in line with a single coil guitar like a strat....But it does not matter so much if you like what it does. Since you are wanting to put this pedal in an active (buffered) circuit, it would seems like the 25K pedal (6181) would be the way to go...10K would probably be fine too....It's all about the taper in these things...Linear taper will give you an off/on little graduation...Audio taper is what you want and that varies by who makes the pedal....good luck... My suggestion would be if you want to change volume without affecting the drive and not using an FX slot, is try assigning the amp Channel Vol parameter to the expression pedal...That works great for me...and you can change the range to whatever you want with no pot noise or signal loss...

check your bias if you are running Class AB most of the time...If the bias drifts a bit, you will get crossover distortion that can be quite harsh and nasty like you describe...If you are running loud in AB mode, best to check it periodically...if it goes away when you switch to Class A, that could indicate the AB fixed bias has drifted...welcome to owning a tube amp!

Nope, only one output mode across all of the outputs...Not enough DSP for that as a built-in feature. However, you can do it with a Dual Tone patch. You put it in Studio direct mode and use the same amp model for both and set one with a cab/mic and the other with no cab...use the mixer to pan them hard left and right...Because the POD will sum the 1/4 outs you would need a dummy plug in the other jack to prevent summing...It's doable, but FX selections will get a bit limited as it takes a lot of DSP to do it...

Something that I figured out years ago that worked great for me with the Flextone III XL is working even better with what I use now with the HD Desktop. A Flextone III was basically an XT modeler with fewer models. However, what I came to realize is that with the amp (212 open back) alone I could never get the cab models to sound right. Rendering a 412 closed cab model on an open back combo just does not cut it as it totally muds out because of the physics of the speaker cab. So I modified it a little because they can't really run loads under 8 ohms safely and added a 212 closed cab....That alone made those closed back cab models translate much much better... Jump forward to now, and I use an HD Desktop/shortboard into the power amps of a DT50 112 sitting on a closed back 212 that is run by a DT25 head...99% of my patches are single amp model patches. I run in combo power amp mode and have patches that use the PRE models for that setup. I have the same patches using FULL amps on a different setlist for running direct FRFR. HD and Helix are the best FRFR modelers Line 6 has done, but I much prefer having tube power amps and guitar cabs than FRFR. Not a knock, just a personal preference. I don't use the TOPO switching as I prefer a fixed simul-class vibe. I run the DT50 Class A Pentode and the DT25 is running Class AB Pentode...DT50 FX Return level allows me to match the volume of the DT25 as it does not have this and use the Desktop master for level control...The direct outs on the DTs sound great...but if the sound guy wants to mic it, that works too... The other tube rig I use for the desktop now is two Spider Valve 112 combos, each sitting on a 212 closed cab. That rig is freaking loud...Destroys the DT rig...not even close... Still use the Flextone III XL in the rehearsal place...I can leave it there and it does a fine for that...but it does not have the feel the tube power amps have... The DT50 is not using a stock speaker. It is loaded with a Jenson Jet Tornado and the 212 is loaded with two Madison Minstrels that were a pretty decent 300 watt speaker that has some EV12L vibe to it...probably going to put Jets in there one day...So much lighter...and they seem to sound a little better in some repects I think...I probably obsess more over pickups and speakers than any other component in my rigs...

Add an FX Loop block to your patch exactly where you want it to be in the chain.
-
You might not be able to run it that far without balancing the signal...But I imagine that this would be 3 conductor and you could use an adapter to split at the HD500 and take the mic into the mic and the pickup into the GTR input....You can adjust the inputZ to match it up a little better if you need to...Seems like maybe it would be doable, but I would have to have the stuff in hand to know exactly how to do it...The preamp seems to be two preamps that sums for you..

spaceatl is my handle JTC777....I am using an old basic little Fender latching FS with a 10K resistor in it. I kinda would like to modify my MK2 shortboard and just have the switch built in, but there really isn't a great spot for it...I really do like it for toggling two different tones out of the same amp model...but also like it for having two different scenes of FX settings is pretty handy...For me changing patches within the same song is something I try to avoid...

+1 on opening up the Flextone and cleaning the ribbon connectors. Also contact clean the RJ45 connectors on the amp, the FBV and the cable ends. Additionally, your FBV might be due for a cleaning also. There are a couple of ribbons in there also that can oxidize and make things freaky...Still have my Flexy and use it in our rehearsal space weekly...

I use a footswitch in the expression jack instead of a pedal...That gives me a parameter(s) toggle that is really quite handy. I use ABCD mode, but often find that I need a 5th switch of sorts to do something a bit outside of simple on or off...

More than you ever wanted to know about ground loops... http://web.mit.edu/jhawk/tmp/p/EST016_Ground_Loops_handout.pdf

If you are using full amp models, try turning the Master DEP control down to aroun 10%....Additionally, try turning the Cab RES DEP parameter down to 0%...The master DEP is not a volume control, it controls how hard you model the push of the power amp section of the model...
-
Get an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator)....Power Conditioners offer very little protection at all...AVRs actually eliminate ground loops....That's what transformers do... This is what I have been using for the last more than several years. https://www.tripplite.com/1200w-120v-power-conditioner-automatic-voltage-regulation-avr-ac-surge-protection~LC1200/

Sure an HD might help, but then you would likely want to turn your SV into a power amp for that....You can do tone morphing within one model or crossfade two models in a patch...But if you changes patches there is a gap...There is always a gap...Amp models and FX models sounds better to me in the HD and they are a bit more flexible...But no one in the audience is going to know the difference other than that dude sitting in the back with his arms crossed... :D
-
This is just a guess....Have you tried turning the Master DEP control down to around 5-10%....I am wondering if you are hearing crossover distortion...They modeled this pretty decently and it can be pretty nasty sounding...Also, turn the RES down to zero in the cab DEPs can get rid of some additional nasty fizz...The Master DEP and the RES cab DEP are the main two that are most often defaulted with too high a value and can add some real nastiness to the tone. Maybe the increased energy of a baritone is contributing a little to this...
-
That has more to do with running with no load at all (forgetting to plug in your cab)...I have not looked at it in detail, but since it's a relay jack sensor, that is NOT going to help if the powersoak fries open and flyback voltage goes thru the roof, because there will still be a plug in the speaker jack and protection would be off at that point.

My suggestion for starting off with line 6 is run the HD400 into the FX return of your head....Spin up some patches....Use the PRE amp models....Since you have a Marshall head, you really have no need for the FULL models that include power amp modeling...This should get you going pretty quickly and help you get under the HD400...Personally, this is the way I would go...Keeps things simple and easy to tweak.... Find the PRE models that work and forego the complexity of 4CM....But if you find you really just have to have your Marshall preamp too... Next, move to a 4CM setup.... GTR->HD400 GTR Input HD400 FX Send->Marshall GTR Input Marshall FX Send->HD400 RX Return HD400 Left 1/4 Main out-> Marshall FX Return This will allow to you to swap between an amp model in the patch and the Marshall preamp on any patch you want...takes some cables and some tweaking, but it works just fine...just that is is a complicated setup that requires a little tap dancing on the switches if you go this route...Some people like it... Best of Luck to you...

Thank you guys....Some interesting ideas. We ran the song twice last night at rehearsal where I had a patch spun up that used a few of these ideas...tapped pups, some straight chorus...Basically, a Soldano Clean with No Cab into a dual FX chain with a Vintage Pre->Dimension on one and the other dry on the mixer with both chains panned center...A spring verb on the end with really short decay and light mix...Vintage Pre worked ok to get the low end out of the wet chain and used the mixer to mix the dry and wet chain...It sounded decent, the first run through with band left me sort of...oh well, that was ok....decent approximation...but that is what it was... next run through I used a goto JC120 clean patch I have and killed the delay and verb on it...Not much for me to do on this song other than swing like Freddy Green as our keys player has the piano, hammond and sax parts down pat...He loves that tune...It was somewhat surprising to me just how much better that 120 patch worked with the band...I love that JC120 model... I really like the capo idea...simple, but that makes a lot of sense... I also like the Acoustic Sim Idea....I have been thinking about getting one of those little BOSS ones, but then that's more to carry around...Really wish Line 6 would make one of those for HD as an amp model.... Thanks again gentlemen...

I'm not really looking for anything specific, but I am just curious what you guys might do if you were tasked to play Only the Good Die Young (Billy Joel) and you would not have time for a guitar change...So you are on your fav 6 string conventional electric and you gotta spin up a tone for this tune. A Vax would make this too easy....just a basic outline of the chain you might setup a tone in your HD for this song...Not looking for a patch as I have one...Anyhoo, I am just curious...

FRFR - Tube Amps!......Food for thought from 30 years modeling experience!
spaceatl replied to leisure491's topic in POD HD
Hi there, my rig has changed quite a bit since HD came out. Basically, the Spider Valve was the first modeler that actually had the right feel. I really think a modeling preamp with a tube power amp is a proven combination in terms of a player like me that prefers to hear the amp instead of hearing a mic on a cab rendering that FRFR guys prefer. Nothing right or wrong with either, just that everybody has different preferences. While the SV rig was pretty darn cool, I still had to carry my BOSS pedalboard to supplement FX that just were not possible in the SV....When HD came out and DT amplifiers, the modeling made a pretty big jump in quality and feel. The HD pod is the first POD that I could play on cans or in a FRFR rig where I actually could get enough feel off of it that I did not miss the tube power amp quite as much. As good as that is, I ended up using an HD Desktop into the power amp in of a DT50, DT25 and even the SVs also. I really like a simul-class vibe, so when space allows I generally will use the DT50 with the DT25 and run the DT50 class A and the DT25 AB...DT50 sits on top of a 212 cab and the DT25 runs the 212...Basically, with an HD there are enough FX that I don't really need outboard stuff...But now that Helix is out, I am starting to think seriously about that unit...It's a bit more than what I need, but it does sound fantastic. I have played thru one and I am really impressed with it. -

I still have my MP-1....still works and sounds great. It will be 30 years old next year.
