Guitarkyller
This discussion has been buried in a couple of other threads and it has drawn a lot of responses from everybody except Line6. It seems that after more than several folks have asked for the set-up specs for their JTV guitars, we got a flat refusal from Line6 service to release any information to their customers. This has been talked about in the "String slipping on my JTV 69" & "Can a Luthier repair my Guitar" threads. Most of us don't understand why we are being kept in the dark over this and to suggest that we HAVE to ship/send/drive our gear to be properly set-up by an Authorized Service Center" is just flat not a real solution in most cases. Unless there is something that can be tuned or adjusted inside the electronics that has to do with a proper set-up, it seems an insult to suggest that no one else could possibly do it right. I've been maintaining my own guitars for many, many years now, that includes a 600 & a 700 that I have sitting here, and have never heard of a company that won't give out the info needed to maintain ANY musical instrument that I have owned. My 59 is way past any warranty like many others, and voiding it isn't a concern, although that seems to be the main reason for refusing to share information with us. If you have an opinion on this....Please post a reply. Maybe a moderator will move the buried posts to this thread to help direct this discussion to a proper thread title??? Remember.......only mushrooms grow in the dark.... Shawn
stevekc
While "Setup specs" are required for Factory Production Quality Control I have been a Luthier for over 30 years - and each guitar is unique. Skilled Luthiers work to implement the desires and action setup requirements of the individual Player - not implement some production factory doc with numbers.
cruisinon2
This is likely to be the only answer we're gonna get: "Q: Can I fix or modify my Line 6 device myself? Can I get repair assistance from Line 6?A: A: If your Line 6 product needs repair, we strongly suggest you contact the nearest authorized service center or distributor in your region. For safety and liability reasons, Line 6 does not supply customers with repair assistance. Line 6 does not offer repair assistance, circuit diagrams, blueprints or schematics to end users. Line 6 does not support the customization or modification of Line 6 products, outside of official firmware updates or hardware upgrades. Any attempt to modify or self-repair your unit will void your warranty." from the official service FAQs Roughly translated, "We don't trust you not to burn down your house with the soldering iron, and we're afraid you'll sue us and some fuzzy-headed "McLawsuit"-friendly judge will make us give you $50 million." Thank the lawyers...

Do you think you have the ability to set-up a JTV then? You sound to me like you would. Have you worked on them before? And how can someone in a different location guess what the conditions are here to do a proper set-up? Also, if I send my getbox to line6, are they going to customize it to my preferences, or just set it to factory specs???? I got questions..................????? silverhead
Anyone can learn to set up their own guitars. It takes a bit of knowledge and practice, not a lot. Any experienced guitar tech can set up any guitar to a player's taste; there are some personal variables involved including preferred string gauge and playing style (hard or light touch). There are essentially three things involved: setting neck relief using the truss rod, setting action using bridge height, and setting intonation using saddle placement. A Google search will tell you all you need to know about standard 'specs' for neck relief and how to set/measure it. It depends primarily on string gauge and fret size/height. The JTV spec is gauge 10 strings. JTV59 frets are Jumbo size, but I had mine replaced with standard size because the jumbo fret height was causing intonation problems with my heavier touch. Action is a highly prersonal preference. My observation with JTV guitars is that I need to set the action a bit higher than I normally like in order to ensure that there is absolutely no fret buzz. The JTV piezos do not like fret buzz, especially on clean or acoustic tones. Setting intonation requires a good tuner, not manufacturer specs. I encourage any experienced guitarist to learn how to do their own setups. It's really not hard or intimidating. You just need a little practice.

DarrellM5
I've been setting up my own guitars for years; it's simple to accomplish. I could easily set up my JTV but when I checked it out it seems that Sweetwater nailed it perfectly. It's no different than any other electric guitar in general. Guitarkyller
It's no different than any other electric guitar in general. That's not what Line6 says. I quote" there are the usual & some things unusual involved" & "there are pitfalls & traps to be avoided" & "these aren't like other guitars". especially 'yer Grandpa's. Sounds vague at best to me. Guitarkyller
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/371247396426?lpid=82&chn=ps I posted a thread about a set-up stepXstep . Skilled Luthiers work to implement the desires and action setup requirements of the individual Player - not implement some production factory doc with numbers. +1 I read Dan Erelwines books (great reads) and learned a lot about the process and thought I knew what i was doing. Then I took my guitar to a Luthier with lots of experience for some work I was having a hard time with. Now my JTV and my old Variax 500 both play like a dream. I asked him about it and got a very similar response as you. Every gutiar is as different and every player, glad you like the setup. He gets all my guitar work now and I pay him with smile on my face.

Charlie_Watt
I learned enough years ago from Dan's book to do my own setups. I highly recommend this book!!!! I am not sure I would say that anyone can do it. I have seen some all thumbs folks that I would not trust with a screwdriver. Everyone needs to know their limitations. I personally would only take my guitar to a pro if it had a problem that I don't feel comfortable to deal with my self. This would include refretting, and nut making. I have fooled with nut adjustments and they are the kind of thing that I can do but I don't do it often enough to be good at it. I don't have the tools to do refretting. I would probably opt for a replacement neck if the frets were really bad.
Guitarkyller
The question is more geared towards.....Why won't L6 tell us squat?? Obviously there have been set-up books written before, L6 is stating that the JTV is different.

Shawn Yeah, I see what you mean, but a basic setup including adjusting the truss rod, setting the string height and intonation are still a piece of cake. Charlie_Watt
They should publish guidelines like the other guitar companies. That's all the specs are anyway. Every experienced guitarist has their own preferences for a setup. The guidelines are for a starting point and the guitar should play well with them.

However, it's good info coming from forum members. Which is exactly the point of the thread. If you want the information, you have to look elsewhere for it. The company that you bought your guitar from won't help you. Stevekc, I asked you several questions yesterday and you managed to answer none of them. I'm pretty sure my Masters Degree included reading lessons and the only info relating to set-up was for the trem bridge. The rest had to do with repairs and parts, but the important fact is that the info is coming from a Roland forum. Maybe I need to go to the Mack Truck forum to find out how to fix my microwave??
