Mic Mixes posted!!! New!!! So much smoother and fuller than the single mics alone. Changing out my FOH IR with one of these. Some of my favorite ones were the mixes. I mixed mine in Helix and really like them, but I didn't want to eat up all of that processing power and routing space with two 2048 sample IR blocks in parallel. So I mixed them down in the DAW. This v5 version of IR's are made using a modified Fractal DI method 2 with the SV HD100. Of course I don't have an AxeFx to take advantage of all of the automation and creation utilities. I don't think the AxeFX will give you a WAV file anyway. I had to get creative with tools I have :) http://www.fractalaudio.com/downloads/manuals/axe-fx-2/Axe-Fx-II-ir-capture.pdf Again, these are positioned near the speaker cap edge for a live-application-type micing and have a lot of highs. I chose to address highs in Helix with the IR block high cut rather than make a bunch of IR's of different positions.

I've got a support ticket open on my new JTV69, but really need to ship it off soon. It seems like bad contact in the tone pot in mags mode. It pops and cuts in/out when you wiggle it. It will work if you push it just the right way. Otherwise, it is near silent as well.

Dude, I love your persistence on the DT integration

Man what a great track, clean, clear and airy. Love it! I went ahead and bought the OH Cali Duo pack. I've been sort of against buying IR's after being a little disappointed with the 3Sigma Mesa IR's. Gonna give it a shot! Edit: Dang that OH Cali Duo pack is great....right up my alley. I've owned Mesa Recto 412 Traditional and 212 3/4 back cabs and these have a great familiar feel to them. The optional C90's and Alnico Blues in the 212 3/4 really cover a lot of clean to chime and crunch territory. These even sound good through my JBL EON 515XT's that we use for live monitoring. I've have struggled with harshness or boxyness with Helix cabs and other IR's in the past. I actually pulled the cut sheets on these JBL's and the published frequency response is fairly flat. With these IR's, they actually have a nice 412-cab-like thump to them. https://www.jblpro.com/ProductAttachments/EON515XT_SS_0811.web.pdf It would have been nice to have a C90 option in the traditional 412. I used to run a C90-loaded Mesa Traditional 412 cab with my Stiletto Deuce II head and it was killer! But there are C90 212/412 blends that sound good. Anyway, thanks again for a great video and IR demo. $30 well spent for a Mesa cab lover.

Holy amp/cab interaction Batman, you may be onto something. Technically, by putting the amp output of the PS2 back into its reactive load you have captured a generic tube amp/cab interaction. Since neutrality is a selling point of the PS2, there should be little to no coloration while adding some liveliness and real tube amp/cab feel back into the signal path. So putting a send/return block of the PS2 tube amp/reactive load between a Helix amp model block and IR could theoretically complete the modeling picture since (I don't think) Helix addresses this interaction in their modeling. Is it worth it? Remains to be seen and may be overkill. But it is a simple and elegant solution with a couple of very versatile and useful pieces of gear. Helix + PS2 is still way cheaper than Fractal Axe II.
-
That's a cool application of the self attenuation config of the PS. Have you tried a Helix preamp or amp with that?
-
I think Send 1 (instrument level) Return 2 (line level) could work, it would just take two separate blocks, whether right on the Helix path(s) and/or on the I/O (round) blocks. I liked it on a single effects loop block so I could easily kick it in/out with a snapshot.
-
Wonder if Line 6 could cram a 600W amp in that 3u Helix rack like Positive Grid did with the 2u Bias Rack....maybe that will be the future Helix amp :)
-
I ran instrument level send/return on Helix loop 1 with both my load box and the slave outs on my amps with no issues. Both my load box and amp slave outs have level controls that I turned down to about 25%. I believe the only risk is Helix clipping on the return if the signal is coming in too hot. Maybe someone from line 6 can confirm.
-
How did you con figure your routing blocks in Helix for Send 1 and Return 2? I actually had no issues just using a single FX Loop 1 (send/return 1) block in Helix set to instrument level. I just turned the level knob down on the slave outs of my Mesa amps.
-
Yeah, sounds like a good way to me. I'm assuming you have one mic/preamp channel connected to each return (1&2). Helix's A/D converters are good quality. The only coloration should be from your preamp.

Hi All - Anyone tried a fryette power station with a Helix?
roscoe5 replied to HoldsworthAM's topic in Helix
Oh, sorry, I though you were thinking stereo. Would be great for that 412. -

It was backordered and the date kept getting pushed back then, so I ended up cancelling the order. Fyi, it is mono. You would need two for stereo or go for the Fryette LXII 1U stereo amp. -
Thanks @jeffhucik. I saw one on ebay for $250. I'll grab a Fryette PS2 end of Jan after I see what comes out at winter NAMM. Seems like a perfect companion for Helix, whether you are using your own heads in the studio or Helix live into a guitar cab. I was just messing around today with the gear I had lying around. Honestly after jamming with my Mesa heads again, my favorite tones are still coming from Helix amp models>Spider Valve Head>Mesa 212. So I bet the Fryette can replace the SV head and my old TAD Silencer attenuator (not sure if it's a reactive load or not). I'll probably sell the DT50 too. Lots of headroom in that SV HD100 though. I took the Helix amp models>Spider Valve power amp>attenuator line out>Helix>Mesa 212 IR. The SV HD100 power section really is pretty neutral when AB'ing it with just the Helix amp model into the IR, and it reacts with that physical Mesa 212 cab nicely. The Fryette PS2 should be as well, maybe even more so. SO enough hijacking...back to Pete Thorn. Yes, his first Helix videos were a big reason I bought Helix in Jan this year. This video is just as helpful and inspiring.

Helix can use the same cabinet IR *.wav files that a convolution plug in can. It does truncate them shorter (1024 or 2048 samples), so you really can't use reverb IR's in Helix.

Holy crap that was fun!!! IR's and even Helix HX Cabs respond differently to a line in from a real amp>load box. I'm gonna have to work later tonight, but I had to capitalize on inspiration. Clips Hacking cheesy 80's guitar riffs>PRS SC Trem> Mesa Triple Rec Multi-watt Ch3 Vintage>Mesa Slave Out (speaker out loaded)>Helix Return 1>MesRec_D112_1.5in_2 IR https://soundcloud.com/michael-potts-995394155/sound-clip-real-trirec-mesrec212-d112-15in-2 Mesa Stiletto II Crunch>Mesa Slave Out (speaker out loaded)>Helix Return 1>MesRec_D112_1.5in_2 IR https://soundcloud.com/michael-potts-995394155/sound-clip-real-stiletto-mesrec212-d112-15in-2 Mesa Recto 212 IR's https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mm1y9x4s75d9oh4/AABljWBWiNEzDlA3_rgB6XNka?dl=0 Now I have to decide which is the accessory...Helix or the Mesa heads ;) Edit: I just tried the the Mesa Recto head's slave (amp) out and it works fantastic!!! It sounds nearly identical to the line off of my attenuator. My Mesa Stiletto II head has the same thing and it works great as well! There's maybe a touch more magic in a reactive load box line out, but I think the slave outs sound great. At one time I thought Mesa had published instructions for making a simple (and cheap) load box with a resistor of proper wattage and ohm rating for use when you use their amp's slave outs. It was only meant to load the amp and protect it, not pass any signal. This seems simple from an electrical engineering perspective with a resistor in a small aluminum project box, maybe even fit it into a large speaker jack housing. Does anyone have any links to some products or instructions?

That's a cool way to use Helix if you have some good amps around still. Wonder what kind of reaction you would get from the sound guy walking in with Helix, a couple of tube heads and no cab ;)
-
Glad you reported your experience with the ISAP Stealth too. I've been considering it to replace my Crate Powerblock.
-
I didn't know that those were made with Helix! Thanks!
-
Thanks for reporting back. Interesting about helix into the PS effects return over the line in. The reactive load and attenuation features are attractive as well. It seems to gave taken online retailers a long time to get these in stock. I kept watching the dates being pushed. I'll probably snag one after winter NAMM if nothing else interesting lips up there from Line 6 ;)

I see. Strange that the AT settings panel button is disabled. I'm not sure what to do on that one. You might try installing or updating the ASIO4ALL driver if one of your other interfaces use it.
-
Okay @Zooey, I found what I was thinking of last night. AT4>Settings>Audio MIDI Setup>Panel (button next to Buffer Size)>Turn off all devices in the WDM Device List except for Helix. Then go pack to the Audio MIDI settings widow and select Output device = ASIO Helix and select you desired inputs and outputs. I dropped a couple of pics here... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4wgopap77ys3gj7/AACjazlVaTDJwcZz8HqJPg1ga?dl=0

Yeah, "samples" sorry.
-
Zooey, it totally slipped my mind. Sorry I'm not in front of my computer and can't give screenshots. I only had to do this once the first time I installed Amplitube, but I had to do this again after the recent AT4 update. In AT audio settings, one level deeper I think when hitting another settings button, I had to "turn off" other audio drivers that I didn't want to use before it would use helix. It's that small window that pops up with the blue buttons.

One thing I did notice about Helix and AT is that I can set the latency to 64ms in AT with no issues. Using IK's own iRig Duo interface, I cant go below 256 ms without hiccups. I think Line 6's dedicated drivers help out. IK uses generic ASIO4All.
