Just remember that putting JTV electronics into a different body will result in different body resonances, and that there will be slight tonal differences in the colour of the sound (EQ curve will change). Some more, some less, depending on the body.

They come in 300 Acoustic and 700 Acoustic, there was no 500 Acoustic version. It's an easy one to forget. eBay is a good source, maybe Amazon UK. Also check with the guitar shops on Denmark St off of Charing Cross Rd, Macari's at Charing Cross Rd and Shaftsbury Rd, if you're ever up London way. Servicing of Variax guitars could be done at Mark Wright Music in Northampton. Mark used to be a service and repair tech at Line 6 in Rugby, when there was a location there. There would also be the usual factory authorized service centers.

2008. If it's a MkII, then it will say so on the front labeling. Yes Billbee. I'm in between repairs, so I have moment.

Software update bricked Toneport UX2

No. GX, UX1 and UX2,... I have several for my set-ups and I leave a set with my music partner, we're running desktop Mac's with OS 10.4, I haven't tried it with my OS 10.6 Mac laptop yet. Laptops and desktops get treated differently with the same OS. They're subtle, sometimes I notice it. -

SONET is still out there, and a whole host of future stuff in the pipeline, coming on line soon, so much so, I wouldn't know where to begin. So much new stuff coming in that area. -

For future reference, there is,... Hanex Service Waaier 36 2451 VW Leimuiden Take the A2 north, turn west onto the E35. ... near Amsterdam. They have a good reputation with my counterparts at Yamaha Europe in Germany.

He would have to be an authorized service center to get access to the service manual. Sounds like what ever he did, it worked. Very good.

There's still some out there. CATV satellites using bundled services is more of what they try to sell on some of the newer satellites. Stuff I read about in my IEEE journals, and the IEEE Communications journals. -

There are a few satellites for commercial public use of the internet. Along with some public access to down-streams of NOAA sea temperature and weather info. Some of the more northern Euro locations get their internet cable runs via a satellite down-link then land-line distribution from there. Some mobile phone services also use that. But yeah, being satellite requires Mil Spec grade Rad-Harden chips and electronics. -

Is this tech a Line 6 authorized service tech? "... turned out the masterpot was physically worn out...because of the channel volume pot."--- Might be possible, though I've worked on hundreds of Spider Valves and haven't seen this yet. "... channel volume should be low at all times, so that the masterpot can be turned way up"--- Channel volume all the way down is a default position. It's to control effects/pre-amp levels before going to the power stage. Though I can see why he would see it they way he does. "... the channel volume is a 'digital' setting, it's part of the moddeling infrastructure"--- That is incorrect. I can't say any more than that on that subject. "The masterpot however gets an actual load to bear, the more it's turned down, the more tubepower/current it has to 'block'. So turning the masterpot down will wear it out sooner"--- Incorrect, there is no load there in that part of the circuit. That's as deep as I can go on that. For the pot to fail as suggested, the pot would have to overheat and have a catastrophic failure from a high current. That would occur if there was a short on a power tube. And even then would be highly unlikely to fail any control pots, since the controls are isolation form the power tube stage. If that pot failed, it would be for some other reason than he thought. Knowing how these amps work, I can comment on this. I can see how this other tech might think the circuitry is they way he describes. If I were in his shoes, I might conclude the same. Good observations on his part, he just drew the incorrect conclusions from that. Are you using 5881WXT power tubes? Are the power tubes biased to the correct bias voltage?

I take it you are all doing the following, but here's a reminder, just in case,... -Also, don't use any USB hubs. -Use the VDI/USB interface device direct to the computer (preferably a rear USB port). -Don't use a multi effects board as an interface between a JTV and a computer. -
Early warning symptoms of bad piezo?
psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Processor boards come already Flashed, programmed and ready to go. You would have to specify which Variax, as these are programmed for specific version of guitar. There is a 300 Electric and a 300 Acoustic, these are not interchangeable boards. Also, that would depend on availability of the particular circuit board. JTV's,... each has a separate program that is not interchangeable with other versions of JTV. You can't take a board from a JTV-59 and put it in a JTV-69, it won't function correctly. And since the topic here is piezos, the early Variax piezos won't fit in the JTV saddles, and vice versa. -
Dave,... not too shabby. I can understand why your luthier doesn't want to do another, I've done a few (two for Carlos Rios which still work fine, as a favour for and the boss) so I know what he went thru. To everyone else,... remember, this would have an affect on the warranty if you attempt this, since it is not a Line 6 sanctioned modification. This is not for the faint of technical hearts, nor for someone on a budget. Like they say on TV, "performed by stunt professionals, don't try this at home". Tread with caution.

Early warning symptoms of bad piezo?
psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Can be touchy devices, but for the most part they do the job well. Piezos are good transducers of mechanical energy into electric energy, that's why people like using them. -

Early warning symptoms of bad piezo?
psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
"So cleaning has only to be done on the top and not at the bottom of the piezo?"--- Correct. "The bottom seems to be the part which could cause problems with grounding, isn't it?"--- No problems with grounding, not with the way the piezos are mounted. -

psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Piezos don't act like magnets, there's no polarity. There may be lattice or cleavage orientations in the lattice structure of the piezo material. Cleaning, just use a diluted soap based spray cleaner and moisten (not too wet) a cotton swab and gently go over the piezo with swab. soundog,... if it comes down to it, it may have to come home for some TLC from the docs. There are of us here who work the earlier acoustic ones. -

Quite a jump to quite a conclusion, with a broad brush of an assumption. Like Schodinger's Cat--- They may be in there and you might not know it,... ... until you pull a spring, look inside and see. I guess there's a quantum foam or quantum spring joke in there somewhere. -

JTV's with floating bridges already come with dampers in the springs. Though the Allparts dampers would be handy if you lose one.
