Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
psarkissian replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Quite a jump to quite a conclusion, with a broad brush of an assumption. Like Schodinger's Cat--- They may be in there and you might not know it,... ... until you pull a spring, look inside and see. I guess there's a quantum foam or quantum spring joke in there somewhere. -

They are foam inserts inside the spring. -

JTV's with floating bridges already come with dampers in the springs. Though the Allparts dampers would be handy if you lose one. -
Spray it on a cotton swab and drip it in. Hitting full spray can gunk it up over time.

Right,... it was to make certain they are correctly shielded. Make certain they are correctly spaced, or you will have problems with mutual coupling inductance between the pick-up's magnetic fields. From our talk yesterday, I got the impression Texas Strats were inherently more noisy than most pick-ups. Some guys like that grunge and know how to make it sound good.
-
And make certain there aren't any impedance mis-matches to interfere with the electronics. Ironically, I was having a chat just yesterday with two guitar builder friends, and Texas Strat pick-ups came up in the talk. I'll ask him about that again, forgot what it was they said.

Early warning symptoms of bad piezo?
psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
"I won't try anything too aggressive yet,..."--- Good. Getting into the piezos on a 700 Acoustic bridge is a touchy thing. Best left to someone who has done a few. Be careful with the flat ribbon cable connectors, they're touchy as well. -
Early warning symptoms of bad piezo?
psarkissian replied to soundog's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Temperature related,... first suspect would be a solder point oxidizing and failing somewhere on that signal path. Next I would suspect the piezo itself. Line 6 authorized service tech will know how to deal with it. Piezo electric devices such as watch crystals, system clocks for electronics and such, are encased and sealed so as to not be affect by temperature. Otherwise, clocks would not be stable and would drift way too much. -
JTV 59 and pickup upgrade
psarkissian replied to Badspike's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
If it came across my bench with DiMarzio's on it, and it wasn't having an affect on the function of the guitar,... maybe okay. Impedance mis-matches with the rest of the electronics, or too hot a field of the pick-ups to the point where it warbles so in Model mode and can't be stopped,... those are among the problems that can affect warranty. Typically, messing with the electronics can be a problem regarding warranty. Changing out the tuning machines (if they don't mess up the breaking angle of the strings at the nut) or changing strap locks (so long as the screw doesn't go into the circuit board and short everything out),... ... is typically not a problem. So long as it does not affect the function of the guitar, it typically won't be a problem. Check with Line 6 Customer Support for specific cases. Oh crus, I'm not that big a curmudgeon. ;) -
Clean piezo signal from JTV
psarkissian replied to Dj_Adry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
"Clean piezo signal from JTV ..."--- the closest thing to that right now would be in "Custom 1", it's a JTV Model of itself. Yeah Triryche,... a nylon like the Valazquez we used to have on the Variax Acoustics back in the day. I also play classical guitar, a nice nylon again would be a nice addition. Nylon sound modeled after the Valazquez, who modeled his guitars in the Torres and Hauser (who built guitars for Andre Segovia) techniques of guitar lutherie. Clean piezo, "piezo pass",... and a nylon. There used to be an on-board reset ability, but that was taken away for memory space for other things including the HD capabilities. So memory constraints would have to be taken into consideration. Maybe a Clean Piezo and Valazquez Nylon String Models would be something to put into Workbench HD and loaded into the guitar as a Custom Model. Something to consider for Idea Scale,... and might, (I emphasize "might") might be easier to implement,... as it would get around memory limits of the guitar. Use it as an add-on for those who would like it. -
Splitting piezo string outputs

Both. And I'm someone who knows the insides of these guitars really well. -

Very difficult, even for me. -

You would have to tap the signal off before it gets to processor board, and not mess up the input impedance in that signal line doing that mod. -Not recommended, so don't do it. -Trying to turn a 6-string guitar into an 8-string,... the other two strings would have to be processed separately, and the processor isn't equipped to do that. -Running signal to an external processor is a dicey proposition. The insides of these guitars are not able or designed to handle such modifications. -
Tried the link, not there. There are those on FB who have posted on the subject of Vetta amps. Yes, like brue58ski said, there is that battery to be checked out. Try Mark Wright Music in Northampton. Mark was my opposite number at Line 6 UK in Rugby, back when we had a location there. He knows these amps, he can help.

Physically tuning the strings off standard, AND using Alt Tune can create problems as the pitch tracking of the strings and pitch shifting of the software have limits. Especially if you tune a string down then use the Baritone Alt Tune, you skirt the edge of the tracking capabilities. snhirsch's point is also well taken, the dual tone effect is something to be aware of when using Alt Tuning. Hearing the sound from the string while simultaneously getting the Alt Tune through the amp, is something to be aware of. Best take it to a Line 6 authorized service center, as they will have service info that your luthier friend might not have. Seen too many luthiers get in over their heads on these, then the guitar ends up on my bench. And that's always a bummer for the end user, because that means even more time on the bench. These aren't your everyday passive electric guitars.

Correct, camera batteries won't work,... - The pin-outs are different - The drain rate is different We have enough overheating or exploding Li-Ion batteries out there, so don't use any substitutes. Used to see similar problems with Sony Discmans and Toshiba laptops, back in the 1990's. Substitute batteries,... ... don't go there.

To continue Digital_Igloo's thread,... it's wireless, there's a carrier and two side-bands. Packing in all the stuff to a finite bandwidth you want, and still have good audio on the other end is not as simple as you think. And for those who would say "use 5G or 6G" communications carriers to fit more side-band bandwidth,... ... that's a wavelength region you don't want to be standing next to. But 2.4 GHz is okay.

"Apologies and I understand if you can't divulge this info, but are there different stock settings in the JTV Variax tech components to match the body/wood/construction of the JTV-69, 59, and 89 to deliver similar modeling results from the different guitar types"---- Models are all the same on all JTV's,... it's the Alt Tune, switching configuration and a couple other things that determines which guitar is which (electronically). You can't take a program board from one type of JTV and put it into a different type of JTV. It won't sound right or fully function. 69 with 69, 59 with 59,... put 59 board in a 69 and you'll have problems. If you get a spare board it has to be for the correct JTV type you have, or it won't work right. That's as much of it as I get into. I've mentioned this stuff in other posts.

New L2M Owner - Rattle Issue?
psarkissian replied to harosha's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
It's most likely the fan. It's not typical, but it happens. Make sure the unit is registered, log a service ticket in your account. The right frequency, the right amplitude,... anything will self resonate. It's why Ella Fitzgerald could break a crystal glass with her voice in those old Memorex audio tape commercials back in the day.- 2 replies

Do All Current Variax Guitars Work With Workbench HD?
psarkissian replied to white_line's topic in Variax Standard
Fortunately, whether from the distribution hub or my repair bench, going over the set-up and making adjustments where needed, is routine and part of the check-up before leaving our hands. We start from spec, then adjust for the location. It's a skill and we get it right most of the time. There's a trick and skill to it, doing a set-up for a geographical location across the other side of the country. Climate of the location plays a big part in it. Yes, piezos are a sensitive thing and pick up a host of thing in the signal. Erring on the side of high, on the action is okay under your conditions, just don't go too high or pitch shift can result if you fret a note hard at too high an action level. All about finding that sweet spot. Rock-n-roll.
