  1. Yeah, it's TV's dirty little secret. Well known in the AES and the EBU. The EBU and ITU in Europe are on to that, and don't put up with it on TV. And heaven forbid you want to show a film at the cinema there, without passing their Loudness Unit (LU) standard (adopted some six years ago, I think).
  2. That's been my experience with repairs. The heavier gauge ones seem to do okay so far. Had one 89F repair that shedded coating a little. Wasn't a big deal, just had to blow it out and clean it a bit. But otherwise okay.
  3. Tremolo 89 would be an 89F. There is some variations between Modeling amplitudes. If your Elixirs are the coated ones, and 9-gauge, that may be adding to your problem with the piezos. These guitars use 10-46 sets as factory strings, D'Addario XL-110's. Making use of Workbench HD to dial it in closer to what you are looking for, would be an option. Trying to get more umpf out of it, some will move to 11-gauge sets. Also, be aware, that when you change gauges, you should have the set-up on the guitar checked and if needed, adjusted for the different string gauge. When you change the gauge, you change the tension, and therefore the overall set-up. The nearest Line 6 authorized service will have the specs and service info, as they have to take into account that it's a guitar with both piezos and magnetics, and that one can affect the other.
  4. What they do is a trick of the EQ that still maintains the overall dB levels within standards. It's a deception on the part of the advertisers. They boost the EQ where the hearing is more sensitive along the Fletcher-Munson Curve, then dial it back at other frequencies, and still keep the overall dB level within the required limits. And so there is an overall impression of being louder, when it really isn't, when you look at dB signal levels or dB-SPL. At AES, when the "Loudness Wars" are talked about, this is something that comes up in discussions. It really annoys us.
  5. The jack is probably grabbing your cable just right. Seen some cables where the tip is the wrong length or the ring doesn't fall into the right spot. Nice. What brand cable are you using? Maybe one of those would be the way to go for those using TS.
  6. Music is scanned and leveled before it goes out at the different streaming services, so that all the music that goes out is at the same standard level. Something I heard mastering engineer Bob Ludwig talk about recently. So trying to crank one's mix won't do any good. A number of mix and mastering engineers were at an AES gathering, and the subject came up. So if someone is looking to circumvent that, lots of luck. AES TD1004.1.15-10,... very good. I'm acquainted with Mr Rumsey from the British arm of the AES, and Bob Schulein and Bob Katz are renowned in the audio world, and are on the same AES Technical Committee that I'm on. LU or Loudness Units have been adopted by the EU and UK for about four years now, and has done very well as it has been starting to be adopted here for about two years now. Not quite locked in yet, but it's getting there.
  7. "It does not come with a TRS cable"--- The original Variax did. The jacks on all Variaxes are TRS jacks. TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) :: T = Signal, R = +Vdc, S = Return (common). Good thing to know when using the battery, and good reason to use the TRS cable. Correct, no battery or VDI needed to play passive in magnetic mode.
  8. It could be a design flaw,... if it was designed to function with both connectors activated in the first place, but it wasn't. Has to do with current draw on the circuitry. "... has suggested that using a 1/4" plug with the ring floating is a safe way to have both VDI and 1/4" signal leads in play"--- hmmm,... maybe. I'll have to try it that way. The plug to jack contacts would have to seat just so,... and stay that way the whole time. I'll have to look into that further. Tried something like that once in the first two weeks of the product release,... the board got hot in places I didn't want it too. I'll look into that again with these newer boards.
  9. The knob looks like it has good clearance. I would get to that next. Wanted to check some other stuff first, since there was already mention of having done that. As usual, good catch.
  10. But it likes it better. True,... but some TS cables aren't correctly covered by jack contacts the way the should. So using TRS is best bet.
  11. Does the 1/4" cable have TRS ends on it? If using batteries and guitar cable,... it likes TRS better. The hook up depicted in the photo is for using Monkey and Workbench HD, and is not for playing thru. You probably already know this, but you can not use the interface device and do any playing at the same time. When using the interface, plug in the cables as you would for programming with Workbench HD or updating with Monkey,... insert the battery, take a headphone plug adapter and plug into the 1/4" jack to engage the relay. Both LED's should go green at that point. Do not have the USB interface device plugged in while playing. It won't play using the hook-up configuration as shown in the photo. Posting a diagram of how you are hooking it up would be good. Photo of a diagram.
  12. Could be oxidized solder, could be failed amp chip,... an authorized tech can get parts if needed,at least those parts still available. An authorized tech who knows the product can get through it quicker and with less problems, as they will have access to parts and service information.
  13. It will need to go to a Line 6 authorized service center. http://line6.com/find/service_center/ There is one near Warsaw and another in Krakow. This is an older product. There are a number of possible reasons for it to fail like that. It will need to be checked by a technician. It won't be anything that you would be able to fix yourself.
  14. Make certain the 500X is not in "Force" mode or it will go to and set one of its own default guitar models, from the 500X and not the guitar. Check the edit page in the 500X in regards to guitar settings. Does this 89 have a tremolo bridge?
  15. If you're in Scotland, check with E&M in Milton Keyes or Mark Wright Music in Northampton. Mark used to be my opposite number when Line 6 had an office in Rugby.
  16. Should I try 3rd-party antennas? NO! Line 6 P180 has active electronics on the antenna, the system is DC Passive to accommodate this, and so are matched for the system. Don't try to mix-n-match this with other devices from other companies, this may create impedance and standing wave issues with the signal. One on each side of the stage? Yes. "Fly" one or both paddles in the PA/lighting truss above the stage? No flying antennae, and especially not in the "... PA/lighting truss above the stage". A passive 180-degree antenna is by it nature, a half-wave antenna, typically with a gain of 2. The on-board active electronics on the antenna will add to that. Not certain what the overall gain is. Too much gain is not good either. It's like a TV signal, too much gain and the color is washed out, too little gain and the color is washed out, out of phase or multi-path and you get ghost images. It's the same with wireless mic systems, they all follow the same rules of radio signals.
  17. SOX,... any board with processor IC that can be programmed for criminal purposes are restricted. Computers that are used in manufacturing that program such devices are not allowed to be connected to the internet, for fear of being hacked from the outside. Such computers have to be stand-alone and isolated. UL (Underwriter Laboratories),... anything that is directly connected to the mains has to UL rated. AC adapter/converters have to be UL rated, while the device they plug into don't. Though, those devices downstream have other things to comply with, like FCC Part 15. Variax motherboards have limited real estate space and a host of things they need to comply with. It's not a matter of spending two weeks programming an R-Pi or Arduino. And since this stuff is sold internationally, there are those things that need to be complied with and certified for,... and that takes time. Unfortunately for some, they think it's a matter of solving issues where Captain Kirk saves the ship in the span of a one-hour TV series episode. Definitely not the real world. Such is the world of product creation in this industry.
  18. Right,... restrictions on dual use products and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) to add to all that. :)
  19. Yeah silver,... you've seen my set-up and work load, the last thing I needed was to take on servicing for some else outside of Line 6. :D
  20. Silverhead,... as I recall the variax rack wasn't our product, it was some guys who bought some boards and did the rack. I imagine it failed because we wouldn't support servicing,... especially since it wasn't our product, and that would fall into my lap. As far as Stevic McKay's prototype guitar goes,... he was in town for some Line 6 promo stuff, brought me his proto guitar to troubleshoot for him,.... NICE!
  21. v2.21 is the current firmware. If you connect to Monkey, the Firmware version should all come up and a notice of the current version would be displayed.
  22. That too,... what Charlie said. Both options work. Either way, it will come back to me for TLC.
  23. MIDI is a control signal and protocol, MIDI is not audio. You can't use MIDI on an audio line.
  24. Could be one of four different things. Get with Line 6 Custom Support, not something you can fix yourself.
