It's a guitar with spy satellite grade electronics in it,... but the electronics are not MIL-Spec. :D Fortunately, these electronics don't talk to the Central Intel, DHS or the NSA. We get enough of that from the phone company (AT&T, San Francisco, 7th floor tap onto the incoming international call's cable line trunking). -

Magnets pull on the strings. So instead of a purely transverse string vibration, there is a pull down component on the strings from the pick-up pole pieces. This creates a circle motion vibration, and so the strings no longer cut the magnetic field perpendicularly, it is also parallel to the field (creating null points in the field). Rather complex frequency and field physics. Going in and out of these nulls injects a beat frequency (modulating freq) within the string vibrating frequency (fundamental freq). This becomes the artifact known as "warbling". It occurs when the pick-ups are too close to the strings, and is especially noticeable when the piezos are engaged when Modeling is on, since the piezos are sensitive and amplify the warbling. Not something you hear that easily with a guitar with passive electronics, but can be audible with those too,... if you know what to listen for. Having light gauge string that can be pulled by the pick-up magnets are susceptible as well. The set-up (neck relief, action, intonation, tremolo tension and pick-up height) should be checked and spec'd out by a Line 6 authorized tech who knows the product, and access to the correct service info,... while still under warranty. -

Pick-up is too close to the string, so there's a slight warbling through the piezos. It's a set-up thing. Have it checked by a Line 6 authorized service, they will have access to service info to deal with that. -
1- Good. Never run a valve amp without a matched load on the speaker output. Matched load being, that if you plug into the 8-Ohm output, that there is an 8-Ohm speaker load on it. 2- When was the last time the valves were changed? Once every 12-18 months for a working musician, 20-24 months for weekend warriors and bedroom rock stars,... unless something happens sooner than that. 3- Are they the specified 5881WXT (matched set) power tubes, and properly biased? These amps are not forgiving of mods, even valve mods. It's already a hot rod. 4- Is the person working the mixer console/board making use of input trim and filters? Resonance that turns into feedback can occur for a number of reasons.

Check the manual for doing pedal calibrations.

Yes,... Mosrite and then Strats would it. Surf rock sound (pre Beach Boys) had a lot of Low-E and A-string tremolo to it (a la Rick Dale), and boom-cha-cha, boom-chak, boom-cha-cha, boom-chak,... rhythm. And the ubiquitous Vox Continental electric organ. Used to chat with The Ventures drummer Mel Taylor about that over sushi, back in the late 1980's. His wife Fiona was in our Japanese language class. He sometimes he'd join us for sushi after class. Great guy, miss him. HD150,... has some good tremolo patches, also spring reverb effects were a big thing back then, for the surf rock of the 1960's. It was very Malibu Beach-ish back then.

One of the things about the Shuriken is that Stevic won't have to tune down, If I recall, one of the "artist models" should do that for him. I think he mentioned something about the tuning during the NAMM demo I saw. He gets into that. There should be a video or two somewhere out there. Might go to Stevic's Shuriken Facebook page and ask him. BTW, that prototype built by Charles Cilia was awesome to play (cocobolo neck and all), as was the Line 6 Shuriken I prepped for Stevic for NAMM.

UX2 recording vocals in a higher pitch

If Cubase is no longer on there, make sure it is complete un-installed and that there are no remnants left. Computers get really confused about having two DAW's on the same computer. Used to see that with computers that had DP or Pro Tools, switched to Logic, then back again, without fully un-installing Logic. It was lock-ups galore. But that was a couple years back.- 9 replies

"From what I have read on this forum in several threads, was that this was a common failure that had a service bulletin written up on it, and had several defective transformers replaced under it"--- I can see how that would be the perception. To clarify,... service bulletin had nothing to do with the transformer, beyond being that other components could sometimes be collateral damage as a result. Transformer failure was not the cause, it was something else, and on occasion it took the transformer down with it.

Thank you. Good eye. Always a good idea to not go past the rated value specified. The outer fuses are rather straight forward, it's the inner fuses that get people in trouble when they try to do it themselves and use a substitute. I see too many come across my bench for the wrong reasons. Keep a sharp eye. Good job.

"I seriously doubt that the DT50 requires a 10A fuse"--- What it says on the inside is what's required. But more than that, it's not just the amperage, there are other specs to be considered, so specific Littel Fuse numbers are specified and required. Stick to the specified parts. These are not the same kinds of all analog valve (tube) amps of old, and so are not as forgiving. I work on these, I write the service bulletins, I'm here to help you to keep your gear from ending up on my repair bench. And to keep you rockin'.

"Upon researching and seeing how this transformer failure was a commonly known problem, and even had a service bulletin put out on these transformers"--- It was actually for a fuse not a transformer. A transformer could be affected,... but not always. "I opened a ticket with line 6 to see if my amplifier was, indeed, one that was under said bulletin"--- The amp presently on your list is not within the serial number range of any service bulletin. A worn tube can pull down a supply rail and damage a transformer, especially if a tube is oscillating on its own or drawing too much current on its plate aka- "red plating". There are a number of ways to kill a transformer. Best thing is to have it checked out by a Line 6 authorized tech who knows the insides of these products. Don't try to fix these yourself, these are vacuum tube amps with high voltage lines, and should only be worked on by techs who know the product. It really hurts when you get zapped by a high volt rail on one of these.

JTV-69S vs Black HSS
psarkissian replied to baggas's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The other restriction is "mother of peril" inlays and dots. Fortunately, we use the synthetic polymer dots on fret-boards. Blame it all on the poachers, they're ruining it for all of us. Next, at the rate things are going, all wood and non-synth inlays will be banned and we'll just be left with Hattori HanzĂ… steel. -
JTV-69S vs Black HSS

Part of it is also about the source of the rosewood and how much. Sustainability is a big thing in the music instrument world. A number of well known guitar companies in the US have already been nailed with fines for receiving wood from protected sources. -
Being that I work on these and JTV's here,... might work. If it does, it will sound different, tone colour and all.

Modified JTV-69
psarkissian replied to a2dconverterguy's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Shows a 2011 guitar, so warranty is not an issue. But for those who want to do mods during your warranty period, be aware that any mods that affect the function of the guitar, will void the warranty. So be aware of that. -
JTV-69S vs Black HSS
psarkissian replied to baggas's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I own two of them (Black- HSS),... love 'em. The only tremolo guitars in my stash. Being an HSS, the humbucker bridge pick-up has a smidge more bite, which I like, while the SSS is a smidge smoother and thinner, making SSS sound more even across the pick-ups. I like the 69S for its faster maple fret-board though. Don't have one of those,... yet. And I'm not really a Strat kind of guy, more of a Gibson and Ricki player. I'm also the guy here that works on JTV's, Standards and the upcoming Shuriken. -
Thank you. That got ridiculous.
