I've done this before. You have 3 EXPs on Helix, so it's REAL easy to hook up a volume pedal to go between the two states. Just do that, you don't need to make some custom switch. It works great and with Helix, you can make it so that a BUNCH of parameters change, not just gain or volume.

Until you give us these answers, ignore every piece of advice you get on how to fix this problem. We must know this stuff to continue, or you're just wasting your time, I promise you.

What it would give you that a USB connection doesn't? Exactly?

SO MUCH THIS!

Want to start using FRFR but need to keep it quiet.
PeterHamm replied to jimbob0898's topic in Helix
The problem with headphones is not flatness of frequency response. It's the fact that it's a totally different way of hearing sound than speakers/pa/etc. It's why they aren't good for a primary source of monitoring for mixing, too. -
Pretty sure that Helix Native will be a standard regular ol' Audio Unit plug-in, so yes.
-
Here's my educated guess. If you are using them as monitors and your audience is hearing something from a pa, set them to reference/PA. If your audience is actually primarily hearing your speaker, set it to guitar if it sounds better.

yes and no, spikes. If your choice is to go through an FRFR speaker set really quiet or headphones, headphones (or better, IEMs) will probably yield a better result. -

Basic rule of thumb for me is, if I can hear the strings over the sound of the speaker, I switch to headphones. -

super low levels? Honestly, headphones will probably work better. -
Line level overloads a lot of mixing boards, or the sound guy doesn't know how to handle them.

i have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about here...

Yup! But it is easier in my experience to mess up a windows machine than mac by far. If you truly know what u are doing you can do great things with either!
-
But admit it, pathological liars are WAY more entertaining than people who only say nice things and tell the truth all the time... there's that... The fact is it almost doesn't matter, because in the serious audio world, clients expect Pro Tools, so you have no choice.

Similar experience, although it's been a few years since I did a lot of work with building or managing Windows systems now (I managed a whole fleet of computers, some in-house and some rental, in the late 90s and until 2005). The registry in Windows is pure evil, but so is using the Terminal on Mac OS. Interesting idea, but don't you think the economies of scale would mean that most likely it wouldn't necessarily be that much better. With Mac OS and Windows 10 you have OSes that are being created for millions and millions (billions?) of installed systems around the world. The number of people buying a whole brand new kind of system in 2017 would be few enough that they'd either be prohibitively expensive or there wouldn't be enough money in it to make it better than what's out there now... or of course both. Btw, the Helix, with its many bug-fixes and updates, is evidence of this (even though I adore it). That said, all indications are that it will be a solidly mature product very very soon. (It already works nearly perfect for me, though.)

Wow, I guess my experience is different from yours. Sierra is the best MacOS update since Mavericks. Has not frozen or crashed on my a single time. I do, however, agree that Yosemite was not all there, and that El Capitan wasn't worth not waiting for Sierra? What is actually not working for you in MacOS? Or are you just in a bitter frame of mind about all this because it's near the end of a rough day? (not being a lollipop... I just know how Thursday afternoons can be!)

Here's another tip or two that goes right along with that. Stop fussing with Global EQ if you have a competent sound guy. Let HIM do that, because he'll EQ you anyway I promise. And reverb? If you are adding subtle room ambience to your patch, just delete that block when you play live if you're short on CPU power, because your room's reverb will sound more natural anyway, and if there's a lot of room verb, the audience can't even hear your subtle little chamber verb...

XT is still capable of some good stuff, and in the house and in the mix, might still sound good for some. "a joke"? I think that's harsh. Would I go back? Uh... no...
-
I can't say why the title without breaking forum rules... My secret... I'm afraid that I rock back and forth like an idiot when I play live, too. IT's why I stopped using a headset mic...

Wow, I wonder what is happening there, because the 6 or 7 Macs I've been around at home and work (only 4 that were completely under my control) have given no users any fits to speak of. I think that the Data that is out there might be different from your particular anecdote, to be honest. Is administrating those computers your job? If so, I'm glad they keep you busy... and employed... :P

yes, under MacOS (again, I'm running Logic Pro X and not Pro Tools) I think that I have not had my system crash while recording in 4 or 5 years... YEARS... And Windows 10 (although I still dislike it) is a great environment to work in. but @kelco, if you want to write a kick-butt OS from scratch that's better and a fantastic DAW to run with it, we're willing to look at it... but we probably still won't switch. Wow. You know that except for hardware failures (I had a bad DRAM) I don't think I've had my MacBook Pro freeze or crash since 2013 or before. Maybe it's your system...?
