Snapshots not changing with one press of a foot switch
rd2rk replied to elphickkenny's topic in Helix
You didn't mention which device you're using. If it's Helix Floor or HX Stomp, attach a copy of the misbehaving preset and I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong. -
IF the PC212 works like the PC112+, XLR Out sends the speaker emulation with a mic emulation if you're using "Speaker" Mode; In "FLAT" Mode it sends whatever signal is present at the Powercab INPUT - IOW, the Helix OUTPUT; If you're in USER IR Mode (IR on the Powercab) it sends the Helix Output through the Powercab IR. If, on the Powercab Tab, the GLOBAL settings include a "Spread" control, it should be assignable to Snapshots, as all the other settings are. Try it!

You can do this in CommandCenter using either footswitches or using Snapshots and the Instant Commands (lightning bolts). Snapshots send Instant Commands on both Preset Load and Snapshot Change. The default "Base" channel is Channel 1, but if you're also controlling some other MIDI device you can either change the Base Channel or assign specific channels to specific commands. When using Command Center to send Program Change messages, be sure to go into Global Settings>MIDI and turn OFF "MIDI PC Tx" to prevent HXS from sending the default PC on Preset Load.

Who is cliff, and why would that matter anyhow? OK, the attached preset is an Arbitrator Fuzz and a Cali Rectifier amp. Do you hear a pop? I don't. bypassvalve.hlx
-
Well, DO YOU hear it on any other effect? AND Are you capable of taking part in a discussion without making it personal?
-
No, I don't hear it "pop", unless the compression is up. With compression at 0 there's lots of noise, but no "pop". Nor is there a "pop" with any other effect which, if the relay noise you claim to hear were actually modeled, would not be the case. It's nice of you to congratulate L6 on a job well done modeling the least desirable feature of stomp pedal switching (kind of like Hum and Ripple on the amps), IF it's an actual thing. I don't think it is. This is where I wish Digital Igloo or Ben Adrian were here to confirm or deny. And please, don't make it personal. There's no ulterior motive here, just a discussion of what is and isn't.
-
Not relay click. Pull down the Compression on the fuzz, it goes away.

The thread so far: OP: "There's a bug!" In the Know L6 user: "L6 is aware of the bug. They're working on it." Other Posters: "It's TERRIBLE!" " IT'S Shocking!" "How could they! It's SOOO inconvenient!" Forum Regulars: "It's a bug. They're working on it. Chill dudes! In the meantime, here's a workaround". Other Posters: "I don't like your attitude!" Humans.

Yes. There are too many routing possibilities to describe a one-size-fits-all solution. Your example scenario would be possible.

I'll take that one, as I have HX Floor, HX Stomp AND PC112+. To use the Stomp with the Powercab, you need to connect: A 1/4" shielded cable (TS or TRS) from HXS Output L/Mono to Input 1 on the Powercab A MIDI cable (5-pin DIN) from HXS MIDI OUT to the Powercab MIDI IN Each Preset needs to use the Instant Commands in the CommandCenter (added in v3.0) to set the Powercab as desired. The Instant Commands are sent each time the Preset loads, and with each Snapshot when the Snapshots load. That allows configuration changes per Snapshot. The necessary commands are listed in the Powercab Manual. Using L6 Link eliminates the AD/DA conversion between the audio Output and Input. Using the audio Ins/Outs adds latency - approx 2-3ms. NBD unless you're Steve Vai (TGP reference). Some people claim that they can also hear a tonal difference added by that conversion. Some people believe in the Easter Bunny. Q: Why does the Easter Bunny deliver custom colored eggs to children? A: Because dyed rabbit's feet would be GROSS! Cue Drum Roll............

Hard to tell much from that description. If the "noise" is a constant high pitched "whine", sort of like a ground loop but high frequency, unplug the USB from the LT. If it goes away, you have a USB ground loop somewhere in your system. Plug the USB back in and unplug other USB connections until you find the problem.

Is that noise at the window merely the wind in the trees? Or a hungry zombie lusting after my luscious brain? I should get up and look......where did my shotgun get to..... WHEW! It was just the cat. Never liked that cat anyway.....
-
I don't hear it, not even on headphones, but maybe I'm using the wrong FX. If you would be so kind as to attach a copy of the preset that you're using to demonstrate this (I have both HX Floor and HX Stomp) It would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Communication in meat-world is so much more nuanced than in the digital wonderland of the internet! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ And if I spoke like that in meat-world, all my friends would move away from me at the bar...... :-)
-
Could be. The joys of text based communication. Meaning is sometimes elusive without the aid of vocal inflection and physical cues.

Am I missing the sarcasm alert? I'm pretty sure that L6 didn't model "relay click". What you're hearing is the sound of the guitar's pickup noise hitting the Fuzz and being reproduced by the amp. If you set the noise gate on the input block, that noise goes away. If I'm wrong, and it's something else you're hearing, please attach a copy of your preset so I can hear it too!

Yesterday you were raving about the PC212 being the missing link between Earth and Nirvana. Today it sux. Take a week off. Listen to your favorite music. Play your acoustic. Eat donuts. Come back with fresh ears. Start with a New Preset. Add an amp that you KNOW you like (not the one you think you should like). Make sure the PC212 is on the FLAT Preset. Put your favorite IR on the Powercab and select USER IR in the Helix Powercab settings with that USER IR selected. Don't get fancy with it! Do everything else on the Helix. Work for the tone you want. When you get it, don't forget to SAVE! If you can't find your tone stripping it down to the bare essentials as above, take up banjo. ;-) Just kidding. But sometimes it REALLY DOES help to take a complete break from a seemingly insolvable problem.

Are you talking to me? I ain't got no problem like you seem to have. You asked for something in a place where nobody who matters is going to see it. I told you where to go to have your suggestion seen. What's YOUR problem?

And there lies the reason why it's taking us so long to sort this out. You and I don't communicate in the same languagel! I never said that you ever said that you wanted the Volume Knob to control the output of the XLR/USB!!!!!!! I said that what you wanted was for the XLR/USB Output levels to be independent of the Cabinet Output level, WHICH IS CONTROLLED BY THE VOLUME KNOB! To put it another way - If one changes the USB/XLR Output Level, it SHOULD NOT affect the CABINET OUTPUT LEVEL (which it currently does), so there'd be NO NEED to COMPENSATE for those changes with the VOLUME KNOB. Completely independent. Post it, I'll vote for it!
-
What you're asking for is for changes in the XLR/USB/Mode Output levels to be independent of the Cabinet output level, and for that to be solely controlled by the VOLUME Knob. Yes? OK, THAT is a NEW FEATURE request that you could make on Ideascale and I'd vote for it! If you read back through this thread, we started out trying to get a proper recording level AND a proper Input level at the same time. We went through multiple issues before we got down to the real problem. It's only now that we've accomplished that, that you've isolated a whole different, but valid, issue. Again, post it, I'll vote for it! FWIW - Sorry, but the Ideascale link you referenced that I down-voted ( I RARELY do that!) was NOT related to ANY of the issues we dealt with, and was in fact a bunch of confused nonsense. I just re-read it and STILL have no idea what he's talking about!

OK, so I spent some more (painful) time with ProTools. First, before I explain how to do this, I need to know what method you're using. Are you creating the events manually in ProTools, or recording your performance MIDI? You can use both, of course, but I'd rather not rewrite the ProTools Manual (horrible P.O.S that it is!).
-
If you came here from Ideascale, WELCOME! I started this test by creating a simple preset - Princess amp, OCD, stock Helix 412 Greenback 25/57 cab. The only change from stock settings is the Output level on the OCD, to keep the overall output level even. The preset's output levels are optimized to be firmly in the yellow (not Red) on the PC's Input LED when hitting BIG POWER CHORDS REALLY HARD! Using the Looper I recorded 4 tracks over USB with PC as AI - two tracks using the PC Speaker Emulation Mode (no Helix Cab) and two tracks using the Flat Mode with the Helix Cab. For each Mode, one track was recorded using the Powercab default Output levels, and one using a lower level to demonstrate the difference that the Output Level setting makes in the final recording. Halfway thru each track I engaged the OCD. That's the first image. The second image is the same procedure using the XLR Out to a Scarlett 18i20 with the input level at 0db. Again, for each mode there's two tracks, the only difference being the Output level set on the Powercab. As you can see from the Track names, the different modes work within different db ranges, but the principle is the same. If the signal is too hot, turn down the Powercab Output Level, NOT THE PRESET OUTPUT LEVEL! TL;DR - Optimize the Powercab's INPUT LEVEL from the PRESET, then use the Powercab's OUTPUT LEVEL settings to control the level sent to your DAW. Lastly, the Powercab's VOLUME knob has NOTHING to do with the USB OR XLR Output levels, it ONLY controls the level that you hear from the cabinet.

Yes, as opposed to the Powercab's Speaker Emulation Mode. For getting started with IRs L6 has the free Allure pack, Redwirez has a very excellent free Marshall 1960B pack, Valhalla has a teaser pack with a variety of cabs, and York Audio has a free Mesa 212 pack. Celestion and most of the other major IRs makers also offer a free sample of some sort. Where you put the IR in the signal chain matters. Putting the IR at the end of the signal chain (in Helix or in the Powercab - USER IR Mode) is kind of like a real life guitar rig, whereas putting it before certain effects like compressors, EQ and Room type reverbs gives more of a studio sound. Experiment! Tubes change over time, and are more likely to be affected by mfg variances, venue temperature and inconsistencies in electrical supply. Overall sound is always affected by differences in room acoustics, that's a given regardless of tube or SS, as are differences in quality of FOH gear and skill of FOH engineers. As for what "everyone says", it's interesting, and sometimes useful, but rarely rises to the level of absolute objective fact. Experiment. Try what others suggest and judge for yourself. The future of live music MIGHT be digital and SS, but I suspect you'll never see Kenny Wayne Shepard using a Powercab. At least, not as long as he can afford roadies to carry his tube amps and roll his tubes for him! :-)

Never had that happen to me either. Sometimes, in a complicated studio configuration, if you do "a bunch of random stuff" quickly, weird stuff will happen.
