I use very few IRs, and rarely add anything, so it's not too much of a problem if I do add to the list. But, now that you mention it, I should think about it. It would be a trivial thing to rename the IRs with a numbered prefix, and continue to import them the way I have been - using the import button, not drag and drop. So when I add more IRs to the list, it would just tack them on to the end.
-
I've tried the numbering scheme (001, 002, etc.) in the past with different versions and have always gotten unpredictable results. Haven't tried this scheme lately though. The way I do it is by keeping a folder with just the IRs I want to be in Helix. Then in the Helix app, I select the import button at the top of the listing. On the dialog that pops up I navigate to the folder the IRs are kept in, select the first in the list, shift-select the last in the list, and that's it. The order they will be in, predictably, is alphabetical, either ascending or descending.

I pretty much do the same thing. I do notice that all the presets are rebuilt after Helix restarts automatically when the flash is complete. When that's done I power off, then on. Then I power off again, then power on while holding switches 9 & 10. Then I change any global settings I need changed. Then import my presets (from the previous firmware version) and IRs. Then power cycle again to have those presets rebuilt.

Uh oh. I started by downloading the firmware from the website, and then the Helix app. Then I backed everything up before running the Helix app installer. Then flashed from the pre-downloaded file. I always get nervous when flashing Helix. I'm afraid there's gonna be a power loss. It doesn't help that it takes sooo looong for the flashing to actually be done. Went smoothly though.

This is getting confusing. What's a backdoor parameter? I fear something just flew over me.

Sounds like you're on the way to getting things fixed. As long as someone's gonna be poking around in there, you might want to suggest to the technician to also replace the USB port with a more rugged one. These ports on the HDs are known for breaking easily, as evidenced by hurghanico above.

You can run the PC editor in offline mode (no device connected) to construct presets, but you'd be doing so deafly. Also, model packs won't show up in the editor when using offline mode. But trying to build presets without sound is a good exercise for the imagination. :)

Yes. For me my emotional state of mind greatly affects what I write on all levels, from melodies to phrasing, whether I like it or not. It seems impossible for it to be any other way. One thing seems certain: if I end up writing something I'm satisfied with, even if that something comes from an emotion that's generally considered negative, I'll almost always be in a good emotional state afterwards. If anyone else runs, it's kind of the same feeling after a long run.

Indeed. It's difficult to tell the difference when listening to samples in a video, soundclip, or live setting. But when the guitar player gets their mitts on both devices, the differences quickly become apparent.

Don't know the exact USB chip on the HD, but I did stumble across a place that sells some Line 6 replacement parts: http://www.fullcompass.com/brand.php?brand_id=LN6&rewrite_name=Replacement-Service-Parts&query=hd500 A quick search didn't bring anything up for the USB chip, but maybe if you call them, they'll know. Not sure if they even ship stuff internationally though. The other way to find out is to remove the housing on the HD and locate the chip.

Yes, you have to have recording armed to record something. For monitoring, it depends on how you're monitoring things, I guess. For example, I take the spdif output from Helix into a pci-e soundcard to headphones. No DAW monitoring necessary in that situation.
-
When selecting the audio device, make sure the audio system is ASIO, the ASIO driver is ASIO Helix, the first input is Input 1, last input is Input 8, and the same for the output range, Output 1 and Output 8. It shouldn't be necessary to arm any track for recording to select the input to that track (but you have to arm it to actually record something). If the above is done, there should be an Input Mono -> Input 7 selection available for any track you want to change.

Measuring current needs to have the meter placed in series. I wonder if finding a used HD might be a more worthwhile option, and possibly even cheaper.

Based on the descriptions of the reset options, I think silverhead is correct above. Or, 5&12 does not restore factory setlists, whereas 9&10 does. Everything else these two switch combos do is the same.

Yeah, it's a lot of blocks. I would think for most people using modelers, that many blocks would go to waste. Most of my presets on Helix have low block counts. Plus for someone trying to use that many blocks, they are likely to run out of DSP first. It is nice to have that many blocks available though. It can be useful. I know there were times with the HD that I was wishing for more blocks. I don't see building presets as work, but part of the creation process that's integral to the music.
-
I thought it was common knowledge that the people on Titan with their miniature, Hubble-like cameras were filming things.
-
True that the sounds generated from the modeling do not change because of increasing block count. But increasing the number of blocks does allow for different tones not possible otherwise. For example you could have a number of blocks - EQs, modulation, filters, etc. - that exceeds the eight block count, which creates a tone that's unlikely to be duplicated with only eight blocks. Throw in some extravagant routing, and the options for creating tones increases even more.
-
It can have up to 32 blocks in one preset.

If you find yourself running into the DSP limit on your HD500 often, then the HD500X might benefit you. There is about 20% more DSP. That's the biggest difference. The switches are also slightly different, supposed to be better quality, and they have an LED ring around them. And finally the screen's contrast is a little better.
-
Lol. If I recall, we have one of those roaming these forums.
-
I wish you luck with another power supply. Hope it all works out for you. By the way, the HD500 and HD500X power supplies are interchangeable, so no worries there.

The right arrow provides you with some self-diagnostics. When selecting FLASH, it will just run a test for that particular item and then return back to the menu selection screen, indicating the state of the test. "P" means pass. Also note that there are more options hidden off-screen, so keep scrolling down on the main menu. It's definitely worth trying some of the options from this boot-mode. It could potentially help narrow things down. The down-arrow while powering on puts the device into "Update Flash" mode. But since hfo1986 has already tried this, and Line 6 Monkey doesn't recognize the device on multiple computers, really the only thing left to try and eliminate as the problem is the power supply, as you suggest above.

If you get good results with this, that's awesome. But for the amp being used, how do you know or find out what the truly neutral settings are so it doesn't color the tone at all, except for the coloring from the power amp? In other words, how do you separate the preamp and power amp parts of a full amp and only set the preamp neutrally? Don't know if this would work, but maybe taking a blank preset, add in the preamp block on a separate path, add in the IR or cab. Set the polarity of path B in the merge block to inverted and adjust the preamp controls until the signal is as close to disappearing as possible. Are these resulting settings, when used with a full amp block, neutral?

I don't know the specifics of how the Helix app goes about converting an IR to the correct format , but I would guess it converts the sample rate to 48KHz first and then truncates it. You probably won't find any general consensus. For the IRs I use, I just pick whatever is closest to the converted format. You could set up some sort of comparison system and try all the different formats to see if you can hear a difference with your equipment and ear processing. Personally, I don't worry about it. Any differences are likely so small as to be insignificant.
-
It truncates them to 2048 samples, 42.6ms. Or 1024 if you're using that IR block.
