What happens when there's nothing annoying left in Helix? Is there a balance that's thrown out of kilter? Does CC128 then become a destructive entity? :) Although I'm sure there's currently plenty to be annoyed with aside from the tuner, so we should be safe for a while yet...

Lol. Too bad you can't do the same thing with computer monitors and TVs to get rid of clusters of bad pixels.

Steve Vai uses a fretting system like that on one of his guitars. It's nice to want things ideally perfect, but that seems to go too far for a very minimal effect. Personally, I'm pretty rough with my guitar and am lucky if it stays in tune for more than a couple of minutes anyway. Most of the time, I don't even use Helix's tuner and just use my ear and the fine tuners on the bridge. It's quicker.
-
Well, hopefully. Interesting stuff indeed. However Line 6 does the tuner, it seems like it wouldn't be difficult to fix the jumpiness, as you've indicated a few posts above. For the most part the jumpiness doesn't bother me, although it does make tuning a bass guitar slightly more difficult.
-
I understood (incorrectly is certainly is a possibility) that what amsdenj said was that if Line 6 is using a PID algorithm for the tuner, it's being used as a controller for the tuner display (does this algorithm kick in only when the target is close?) and just needs a little tweaking to tame the current jumpiness. Maybe my brain hardwiring is missing the PID algorithm, cause when I tune my guitar, I always turn the pegs at the exact same rate.

Shortly after updating to 2.12.0, Helix locked up during the startup process. The animated DNA strand just stopped. The same thing happened before with previous updates. A power cycle was the only thing to do, after which all seemed normal.

Lately, I've been stuck on the Mesa Mark IV for lead tones. Some mysterious inner voice keeps telling me not to try anything else.
-
I recall reading an insightful post by amsdenj some time ago about the inner workings of the jumpiness. Finally found it: http://line6.com/support/topic/21955-tuner/page-2?do=findComment&comment=167375

I think rickrussos might be referring to a physical amp.

If my memory isn't faulty, early on, the firmware and the Helix app had mismatched versions. At one point they decided to make the versions match, although I'm not sure where that started. Might have been around 1.10 or 1.12. Now they broke the synchronization that they deliberately put in place, haha. My guess is that none of this is going to matter in the future, so in the meantime, breaking things like version matching to increase the level of confusion could be fun.

Thanks. Had to look up Stick. The most obvious thing I could hear that's from Helix was the bitcrusher. Very creative piece of music.
-
That's really good. Care to expand a little on how you did this? How much of it is Helix, and how much is other processing, such as a DAW. What instruments were used?
-
Not at all familiar with SAWStudio, but CC32 selects the setlist, 0-7. On Helix, if you press the preset knob, there is some text above the second encoder (knob below the screen) that tells you the specific midi data you'll need to send.

No. The models inside Helix.

For mid-gain, or slightly more, lead tones, on the HD, I found myself automatically throwing a compressor at the beginning of the chain no matter what the amp used was. Not so for Helix. On the contrary, I find a compressor destroys, or at least diminishes, the rich and open feel from just the amp (the Mesa Mark IV). In fact, lately I find myself not even using any distortion models. For higher gain, rhythm type tones, a compressor can help tighten things up and tame any low end, but it's not absolutely essential. For cleaner type tones, I'll put a compressor at the very end of the chain.

About the only thing I can think of is to try the preset in a different preset slot if you haven't already. If that doesn't work, try the preset in a different slot by rebuilding it from scratch.
-
Glad you got it all sorted out. Thanks for following up and letting the forum know how it turned out. Hopefully you weren't without it for too long. Somehow, playing guitar without some sort of device like the HD just isn't the same. I imagine it's close to having no guitar at all!

This amp is my favorite and I haven't noticed anything like this at all. Although from day to day I do notice subtle differences, but that's unlikely to be the fault of Helix. One thing to consider, in addition to what Monkey XT said above, is the possibility of a perception phenomenon and/or ear fatigue. But when you say switching to a different preset and then back again fixes the problem kind of kills that idea. Is it an obvious, sudden change? Is it gradual and subtle? Or is it gradual and obvious over the time it occurs?

I don't get it either. And after thinking a little bit about it, I can only come up with one scenario where no trails would be useful, and that would be during a moment when silence is wanted. So delay, maybe. But with reverb, a sudden cutout would sound unnatural. What other scenarios would no trails be good for? So I prefer trails on. Sometimes I'll use a delay or reverb in a parallel path and when I want the effect shut off I'll cut the input signal for that path instead of toggling the effect. This has the effect of producing trails even if the trails parameter is off.

Old thread. Necromancy! Tone for tone's sake can be interesting, but quickly becomes boring. The tone I like to hear from Helix is one where every single note played, whether fast or slow, is the event at the occurring time, speaking from a guitar player's perspective. The event conveys emotion and the emotion is connected to something in the real world. Or an imagined world that's derived from the real. Gobbledygook! In other words, whatever the tone happens to be, it won't matter unless there's meaning behind what that tone allows you to do. I do find that the tones Helix is capable of makes attaching meaning behind every note a bit easier than say, well, take your pick. For me it's the HD because that's all I had before Helix.

Lol at this thread. I had no idea they're able to emulate fuses already! I've heard Line 6 can only do simulations. :( Damn. Buyer's remorse.

What expression pedals do you guys use with the Helix?

One thing you might want to consider is the people who have had problems flashing the firmware, for whatever reason. All cases may or may not be because of someone not following the procedure. This information might give you pause to unnecessarily perform a firmware flash, at least until there's more goodies as a result.

Some of the amps in Helix are ported? Ported from what? As far as I know, there are no modeled amps in Helix that are from previous modelers.
