Just had a listen on a 500X between the guitar signal with tuner engaged, a blank patch (no processing), the spdif dry output, and usb. They all sound identical to me. So unless I'm missing something, those are really the only ways to get a dry signal to your computer. What exactly are the differences you are hearing?
-
You could use the spdif output from the pod if you also have some way of getting that signal to your computer. There is an option in the system menu to change the output of the spdif; one of them is dry output.
-
This is indeed good to hear.

If you have another power supply to try, that might be it. Or if you can measure the output from the power supply to see if you need a new one.
-
Since you tried a different input, that points to something physically wrong with the guitar in (the input you were using before?) jack. You could get it serviced somewhere or try and look at it yourself if you're capable to do something like that, which would mean taking the HD500 housing apart to get at it and possibly removing and replacing the guitar in jack, which would require some moderate soldering skills.

If you have the new metal model pack, I would suggest the 5150 and no other distortions. With no metal pack, maybe the Soldano with a tube drive. For the cabs and mics, either the blackback or the greenback would be good. The greenback is a little darker sounding while the blackback is more forward. The greenback also seems to have more of a saturated goodness that works really well with a wah. For the mics, maybe one of the 57s if using the greenback: one of them with the greenback produces a little more fizziness, but I can't remember which one it is. I like the 87 condenser with the blackback. You could also set up dual cabs to use both cabs and mics.

One for an auto volume: http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Autovolume-for-Helix/741035-23508 This is in case the other entry for making other effects have an auto ability via an LFO doesn't get implemented for technical reasons. I can't imagine the Helix without an auto volume.

I think the title of "Auto Wah or Auto Everything" is pretty good. I'm mean why not, it's everything, right? Maybe slightly generic sounding. A lot of people might not see what a powerful idea this actually is, or could be, though. Getting people to vote for it is key. Having trouble thinking of something better for the title.

One thing you could do to prepare for a device like the POD HD series, is gain a generalized knowledge of what makes a fairly decent guitar tone and how it's put together, which could contain slight differences depending on the genre. People have already experimented ad nauseam over the decades for what works well with analog stuff, and the PODs are really nothing more than simulations of that, with the great added ability of defying reality and trying things that might not be possible for real.

Thanks napynap. Hope you find some use for the patches. Same here about getting the whole bundle of packs. Really only wanted some in the metal pack and the bass amps, but there's not much of a choice between $100 and $100. Besides I'm finding an interesting tone with AC30 Fawn Bright.
-
Yea. The 5150 is a LOUD amp indeed.

This is an article to keep on hand in case the internet goes down. Thanks.

When I tried the patch, I actually thought the tone was good. To clean it up a little, ease off the reverb mix and decay somewhat, and see if getting rid of the early reflections on the amp makes it better. The phaser might be adding a little harshness when turned on, so try backing off the mix a little. To clean it up even more you can back off the gain slightly on the boost comp and overdrive. One thing I always do no matter what is put the cab low-cut DEP at least at 100Hz.

Thanks joel. Always great when someone likes your creations.

For the amps, at least most of them, might it be safe to assume that the defaults would be the most neutral settings?
-
There should really be no need to get another audio interface. Just use the POD's ASIO drivers. After listening to your two new samples, those are nothing like the first one you posted. I don't really hear anything obnoxiously wrong with either of the last two. It's about what I got when I tried the patch, with all effects enabled as well. So something changed for the better by using Reaper.

I'm finding an interesting tone from the AC30 Fawn Bright, the 410 Rhino Cab, 112 Dyn, with a distortion and compressor up front. It's got a nice "awwwwww" tonal quality to it.

With the spread at 100%, if you set the offset at a max of ~90%, that will give you about the widest stereo field with very little ping ponging. The more you decrease the offset towards 50%, the more difference there is between the delay times for each speaker. Below 50% sounds a little different that going above 50%, almost like the delays are the opposite of going above 50, but not quite, because the stereo field also seems a little narrower from 50 to 10, than from 50 to 90.

What DEPs are they talking about? The amp or cab? A neutral position for the cabs might be to set the resonance to zero. The amps? No clue.

There's now another factor to consider. I just tried up voting radatats in a different thread and was prevented. Possibly because the weight of the 690 aircraft is too much and won't allow it. LOL.
-
Thanks radatats! Glad you enjoyed it.

I tried the patch and everything sounds more or less fine going into reaper. Nothing like what's hear on the wav file. It does sound like the +18dB record send level in the Line 6 Audio-MIDI Devices control panel is checked, overdriving the signal. When you say you have ASIO installed, what do you mean exactly? Did you install the drivers for the HD500X and select that option inside the recording program?

Thanks NucleusX! Never heard of Greg Howe before just now. The first clip I just heard of him reminds me a lot of Guthrie Govan. It's great finding out about a new, fascinating guitarist. Thanks! The 5150 for me is a gold mine. Used to use the Soldano overdrive, crunch, or clean, but no more. What I like most about it is it's so expressive in the higher frequencies. Might try experimenting with the Shiva next.

Thanks!
