I think I get what you mean by this. All the little unwanted string hits, scrapings, bridge bonks, etc. are more prominent with the resonance higher. That's the same conclusion I keep coming back to as well. Thanks for the nice comment about the melody. In this combination of amp/cab/mic, I actually found the resonance at zero producing a brighter tone. But also hiss/fizz. So maybe somewhere in between. But you're right, there are so many combinations that sound like a mattress over the cabinet. The new bass cabinets have some interesting sounds. When idle, and at lower drive, it's quite a bit less than the soldano overdrive with a tube drive in front.

Thought I'd let people know the only functioning way I have found to know the values of the amp DEPs while using dual amps and the latest version of HD Edit, 2.26, while not messing with the pod itself, so as not to create sync errors. 1. Select, with the mouse, one of the cab DEPs. 2. Use the keyboard up or down arrow once, then the opposite of what you just did. 3. Select the amp DEP tab. 4. Select the amp DEP you want to adjust and adjust it using either the keyboard or mouse. 5. To see the value, you have to look at the pod's screen. HD Edit no longer displays this value. 6. To adjust more amp DEPs from the same amp you just adjusted, repeat steps 4 and 5, 7. To adjust amp DEPs from the different amp, repeat steps 1-5. This is incredibly annoying to say the least. Apparently Line 6 is aware of this problem. Only question is how long till a fix.

Thanks for reminding me about this. When I started messing with the resonance, I had your data in the back of my mind, but deliberately ignored it so it wouldn't create expectations. It's nice to see measured data coincide with actual use in a mix. Good point. Although it's nice to know what's going on with this parameter, it seems there's other variables present that can't really be quantified. So it's probably best to stick to what my ears tell me.

Guitarists should be used to things like this anyway. Contortions and all. No big deal. It could still be worse though. What if they made the post content font italic as well ...

Such a seemingly simple and obvious notion that makes perfect sense.

It's the forum. It's the same with IE, Firefox, and Chrome. It was better the other way. If this was intentional, they have managed to make sucks even worse.

Interesting. If I listen to it on soundcloud through my computer speakers, I think I prefer the first also. It's a little more open, and brighter. But through my headphones (mdr-7506), the second sounds better. What kind of speakers/headphones do you use?

It's an hd500x patch, but you could probably just drag and drop the patch file to hd500 edit. I think the hd500 should have enough dsp. Didn't try it though.

I've been messing around with the new 5150 amp and find it quite fizzy if the gain is too high. Really great amp otherwise, and I think it's become my new default, at least for now. One of the things I've noticed is turning the resonance way up can potentially cure some of the fizziness. Or at least I think it's fizz. To my ears, it's something like a hissing wind that's constant when trying to talk to someone, and when it stops, suddenly everything is clearer and easier to hear. I know most people tend to like the resonance at zero, but you never know. It might be something amp/cab/mic specific. Here is a short clip, the first half with the resonance set to zero, and the second half to 95. See the attached patch for the details. The only thing I compensated for when changing the res from 0 to 95 was the volume difference this causes. I used the channel volume. Also, this patch might work on an hd500 as well, but I haven't tried it. A couple of notes. It's more noticeable with headphones, and some of the difference is lost because of soundcloud's conversion from flac to whatever they do. It's also really easy to hear the difference in the daw because you can instantly switch from one to the other. Lead5150.zip

Most people seem to like res at zero. I'm one that's the opposite. I don't know why that is. Or it could even be that res boosts low frequencies more than high frequencies, so the lower ones start to overpower the higher ones.
-
It could be that increasing some of the frequencies around the fizzy ones, but not necessarily the fizzy ones, would change the balance. So the increased freqs start to 'drown out' the fizzy ones. This could also be dependent on the cab/mic. I hear it with the blackback and 87 cond, but maybe not quite as much with a blackback and 57 on axis. Other cabs/mics I haven't checked out yet.
-
Yes. Increasing. I don't know why I might perceive this, but I do. It is subtle though. Just a guess: increasing resonance generally boosts some frequencies. And because of this, the balance between the offending fizzy frequency(s) and whatever might be boosted changes, changing perception.

Well, at least now you can say it is something related to the pod physically being connected to your computer via usb, and only with the pod's usb firmware version of 1.04. That would mean possibly an incompatibility has risen between your computer's usb implementation and the pod's (since usb 1.04). Could be either hardware, firmware (bios), or software (usb drivers) on the computer side of things, which you might be able to do something about. Try different usb ports for the easiest thing. You could look in your computer's bios to see what usb options are available. If you want to rule out the pod and you have access to another computer, try the pod on that.

The EQ is being over-driven. Try adjusting the ch vol of the amps or the mixer volumes. To get rid of some of the fizz, try assigning slightly less volume to amp B, since it uses the 57 on axis.

I'm not a big fan of the EQs, so I tend not to use them. But I have noticed that this amp is LOUD, so it could be that the EQ (after the amps?) is being overdriven? I have the drive at 30% for a dual cab setup. Both amps are 5150s, and the same settings for both: 50 bass, 90 mid, 38 treble, 12 presence, 0 er. Delay and reverb after the amps. The cabs are the blackbacks, one with an 87 cond, the other 57 on axis. The one with the 57 on axis has 2% less ch vol, 24 vs 26. Still tweaking all this. I have also noticed that increasing the resonance for the cabs takes away some of the fizz. For some amps, increasing the bias can help with eliminating fizz, but with this amp, the bias seems to have little effect, or if it does I can't really hear it. So far, I am really liking this amp. It's going to replace the Soldano as my default. It just drips with harmonic content. The type of music I play is along the lines of Vai/Satriani. Another thing about too much drive is the more of it there is, the less clear everything is, at least with this amp.
-
This is an important statement. I just bought the model packs and have been messing with the 5150. This amp in particular adds a lot of fizz when the gain is turned up to high. Somewhere around 20-30 is a sweet spot. And this is with only a tube compressor in front of the amp with a level of zero and a threshold of 45.
-
The 'pre' versions don't have the power amp modeling, just the pre amp section of the amp. That also means the pre versions don't have the deep edit parameters for the amp.
-
Not to mention it is a potential way to pick up bad playing habits, if done to excess.
-
Now if Line 6 could add the global eq to this list...
-
I am a perfectionist also when it comes to playing. The tones I've been learning to not worry about so much. As you say, only people with trained listening skills might be able to tell a difference. But I have to disagree about practicing without an amp. Maybe it depends on the type of music being played, but for myself, partial to higher gain vai/satriani type stuff, the tone is an essential component, affecting immensely how I interact with the guitar. Without it, many of the phrasings would just not be possible. It would be like cutting off the last three fingers on your right hand and your thumb from the left. Yikes!
-
Same here. Even if the pod is moved around somewhat, I have the cord positioned so that the cord at the point of the pod doesn't move at all.
-
As far as I can tell, they both look the same.

No complaining on this thread: why I love my line 6 gear
duncann replied to wilson69978's topic in Line 6 Lounge
This is correct. I remember recently a test was done on passersby in a fairly busy concrete downtown type setting. They set up a table with cake samples to try. Both cakes were identical, but one had a heftier price. In all cases, the people who tried the cake samples said the more expensive one was richer, had more flavor. The cheap one was dry. I'm sure people who work in marketing and advertising know all of this. Including people at Line 6. It's nothing new. People are easily manipulated, even if a person is aware they are being manipulated, it can still work. -
HELP PLEASE! POD HD500 CANT BE DETECTED BY MONKEY AND EDIT.
duncann replied to carlomarcos's topic in POD HD
Since you tried on more than one computer the chances of the problem being something with the pod increases. Another bad indication is a bootloop after a global reset. If you can take the pod back to the store you bought it from, don't hesitate. Otherwise, you'll probably have to get it serviced somewhere.
