  1. Just to throw some hope in here. I am hoping that the Yamaha purchase has put some things on hold until they looked into how things were being run employee/management wise, and maybe did/are going to do some tweaking. That's what I'm hoping. Having said that I'm VERY disappointed in how long this is taking. The JTV spank model position 2 issue is definitely a problem and not an unrealized feature. So I'm expecting at least one more patch/upgrade, whatever you want to call it, before it's completely abandoned. Hoping HD500 connectivity will be coming with that. And if it's not, LET US KNOW!! I don't think it was unreasonable at all to expect this kind of connectivity since it's been in everything else before. And to say anyone shouldn't have expected it since it wasn't promised is a bit disingenuous. Especially since, as we know ad nauseum, they don't comment on anything "in the pipes" which only leaves us to speculate based on past actoins. I too will be saying goodbye to Line 6 if this doesn't happen. And I've been a Line 6 boy for a long time.
  2. I see. Well, yes, if it's about quality I'm sure the PRS will be better made than a Korean JTV. You may want to look into American made JTV's which I believe are of the same quality as PRS but are quite a bit more expensive.
  3. This is essentially a repeat of everything above. First decide if you would like a huge variety of sounds including the ability to essentially create your own guitar (using Workbench) or if the PRS "sound" would be enough for you. You can do some thing like change the pickups and coil tap to get a variety of sounds but the JTV will have more. The Variax will also change guitars and the tuning of the guitar as you change patches on the HD500. So if you want the Rickenbaker 12 string model with a DADGAD tuning for just one patch you have that capability. Variax and HD500 equal a ton of variety, which is what I wanted, but you may not be that interested in that. If you generally stay with one or two sounds and the PRS gets you those sounds then I would definitely recommend the PRS. So that's the first decision you have to make. Do you want tons of tonal variety or will just a few solid tones be what you want. If you're good with just the PRS sound, go with that then, just for the sake of less complication which is good. After that I agree with play every instrument you can that you're interested in. I remember playing a one pickup, on sale, plain white with a Spawn decal (remember that comic book character) Kramer guitar whose neck seemed to fit me like a glove. I always regretted not buying it because it felt so good and was only $100. So play as many guitars of the kind you want as you can. You never know when you'll hit one that feels just right.
  4. As I recall, there is no way to calibrate. I think it's because it's based on the ohmage of the pedal which is why you need to get a pedal with the right ohm parameters. Specifically a pedal with a 10Kohm potentiometer. The pedal on the HD is optical based on the brightness of the led so it wold need some kind of calibration.
  5. This can be many things. Are you able to hook it up via USB to a computer. That will make it easier to check these things. For right now check to see what your inputs are set at. Then check your mixer and see where those levels and pan pots are.
  6. Those are not exe files. They are 5xe files. These go directly into the HD500X via the HD Edit program. And note these are 500X files. If you have an HD500 you would have to load them into the Edit program, write down the settings, and manually enter them into your HD500.
  7. I guess I need to make clear if it sounds good to you IF YOU'RE IN TUNE, then it is good. I also made the caveat that if no one is listening to you and you want them to, then you may need to reassess. More to the point, it doesn't matter how you get your "sound", if you find one that suits you, that's good enough. With an amp, with an amp sim, plugging a distortion pedal directly into a mixing board, using the mixing boards mic preamp for distortion, using a Rockman module (Tom Scholz wasn't the only person doing that), taking a razor blade to your speaker, placing the mic across the room from the amp, playing a cassette recording of a guitar performance through a distorted guitar amp (all of which have been done in popular rock songs). I used to hate AC/DC's distorted guitar sound. And I mean hate. Now I love it. If they had listened to me back in the day (like that would've even been possible) we wouldn't have the AC/DC sound we love so much. Ignore people like the above. He says your ear should always be improving. Many musicians from the '40's would tell you the ears of a lot of the musicians from the '60's and beyond never improved and in fact got worse. I would say your ear should not so much be always improving but always changing and exploring. Like me, that AC/DC sound you were so sure was one of the worst, may turn out to be one of the best. Try to shut down your prejudices (like whether you see an amp, or you don't see an amp) and just listen. If an amp is the only way you can get that great, but be your own judge. Finding people that don't like what you're doing and want to limit you are easy to find and will pretty much go out of their way to let you know. BUT, to restate, if you're completely convinced that what you're doing is right AND nobody is listening you may want to reconsider. I've certainly run across plenty of musicians in that situation and they are very poor, sad and angry that no one "understands" their vision. Be careful of that trap as well.
  8. Try here. http://line6.com/data/6/0a060b316ac34f0593f9471cf/application/pdf/M13/M9/M5%20Model%20Gallery%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20D%20).pdf Every effect in here is in the HD500 and uses the same modeling.
  9. By the way the HD500X wasn't some kind of Line 6 conspiracy to get people to buy another HD500 since it was slightly upgraded. Nor to screw earlier owners. The chip they were using was discontinued. The chip they were able to replace it with and maintain the cost, had more power. So, if you're the manufacturer, what would you do? Here were their options. 1. Not tell anyone and not use the extra power, thereby avoiding crappy threads like this. 2. Use the extra power and not tell anyone. Now HD500's made past a certain date seem to have more power. WTF!!! etc. Imagine the controversy if they'd done it that way. So if I'm going to use the extra power and want to let everyone know it's there how do I do that? 3.Just put an extra letter designation in the model name and hey, maybe even improve another thing or two while we're at it. The chip discontinuance was never planned. If it hadn't been discontinued and the chip they're using now was available, I doubt they would have have done this little 500X upgrade, but they had to use the new chip. It just happened and I think they handled it exactly the way they should have. If you got an older HD500, sorry about that, they couldn't have provided the HD500x's power and maintained the price they wanted at the time. And the slight upgrade in power was not a plan, it just happened. Line 6 handeled it in just the right way.
  10. One hint, turn your tone knob all the way down. I've found that it helps the tuner "focus" so to speak.
  11. Up To Definition used as a function word to indicate a limit or boundary <up to 50,000 copies a month> Lose UP TO 50 lbs. Save UP TO $50 Gets UP TO 30 mpg Will last UP TO 6 months UP TO means that's the top limit that you will get, NOT that you will always get that amount. If you haven't figured out what UP TO means after being inundated with this particular term in advertising for decades, then you probably can't be helped. You may want UP TO to mean something else but it doesn't. The way it was used in the Line 6 advertising was not deceptive or a lie. Did it paint the HD in the best possible light? Absolutely. That's why the advertising people used it and why it is so commonly used in advertising. "Up to" me means I should be able to put 8 effects in a chain, and if there isn't clearly a side note to that, then its not accurate. Thanks for your overly long, totally pointless, proved-nothing post. I hope you feel better." You ARE able to put 8 effects in a chain, just not all the time. 8 is the most, the limit, the maximum of what you can put. But you could get less. Just like it has been used in advertising for decades. And just as the definition shows, it indicates an UPPER boundary (hence the use of the word UP). As soon as I saw that term in the HD advertising I knew I wouldn't be able to always use 8 effects. Ya know why? I know what UP TO means. I'm sorry you didn't and apparently still don't.
  12. Go to a music store and try different amps. I would think your amp would work but every amp sounds different so maybe a change in amp is all you need. You seem to have tried everything else.
  13. Power block eh? I have one too and am going to be using it for the first time shortly with my HD500. Just out of curiosity and if you don't mind telling, what kind of cab do you use, do you generally use the preamps or the full amps of the models and what output setting do you use? Studio Direct, Combo, Stack? My cab is a Marshall 1960A.
  14. One thing that really impressed me in regard to the accuracy of the HD500 was the Deluxe Reverb recorded with an SG and an SM57 in this Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0NQf0CyiQI And comparing it to the HD500 modeled one. I can't remember what the HD500's settings were but I think I just cranked the gain all the way (like he did) and I don't remember what SM57 sim I used (again I probably just use what came up automatically). I was able to play each one directly through the same system and speakers at the same time. They were essentially indistinguishable to me. If you have the ability to hear this Youtube and the HD500 both through the same system at the same time, then give this a shot. I think you will be amazed, as I was, at how close they were. Oh I was also using a Variax with the Special 1 model which I think is the closest to an SG. And as I said before, if it sounds good to you it is good. Forget about what anyone else (especially the "experts") say. There were many of those "experts" back in the day who kept telling the rock, etc. musicians to "turn it down. It's too loud." and "distortion is bad" among other things. This doesn't mean if you like the sound you've arrived at, everyone should, or will, like it. In fact you may be the only one that likes it at the time. So, make your own sound your own way. If no one comes to hear that sound then you may want to reconsider it. But the only people that really count in the "does it sound good" department are you and whatever people you can get to listen to and like you.
  15. You can pontificate forever on this and I get and agree with most of each sides arguments. In the 50's, Link Ray sliced his speaker with a razor blade and liked the sound. Jimi Hendrix had to label his master tapes(1st album) when they went for mastering with a message saying the distortion was on purpose and to not try and fix it. Whatever you use to get a "sound". If it sounds good to you it is good. Make up your own mind and forget about everyone else. Me, I love modeling and this is where I'm staying It seems like the main argument has to do with things only the player can feel and notice. I haven't found many listeners that can tell the difference from a well modeled amp compared to the real thing. Especially when recorded.
  16. The DT25 is more a guitar amp than a full range speaker. It is configured to work very well with the HD500 but also is a guitar amp in it's own right. What I think you're looking for is something from the Stagesource line they have. Full range powered speakers. They are relatively expensive and given Line 6's lack of support for older products, you may be taking a bit of a risk but it seems the majority of people who try them like them alot. I think they might actually "talk" with the HD500 via Link output. Not sure about that though. Here's their website. http://line6.com/stagesource-l2m/
  17. I don't mind the inevitable obsolesence of a product because of technological advances. That's just going to happen and should. What I do mind is bailing on a product. The Vetta II has bugs. They should have been fixed before they stopped supporting it. Or at least explain that there was no way they could be fixed. The Variax bass was going to have Workbench compatibility. This was in all the advertising before it came out and is in the owners manual I have. It never happened. Also some backward capability. I have a hard time believing they can't do this for the JTV with at least the X3 if not also the Vetta and XT. Yes I know they can work sort of but it's a pain. If you're going to put a product out there at least support it until you have nothing left that you offer you can plug it into. And I'm only talking being able to do with the JTV what you could with the Variax. Ya know I buy a new version of your product and it still functions the same as the old one. Just being able to select models from the edit programs is mainly what I'm talking about. It must be possible or am I wrong? I do think businesses owe it to their customers. Just my opinion/
  18. Knobs look limited and I see no screen. Is it easy to program the patches from itself? Can I hook it up to my Windows computer (via USB or Bluetooth) and control it from there? I see no VDI for my JTV. Will I be able to use my Android phone to control it in the future. Can I hook a controller pedal board of some kind up to it to change and/or control patches and use a controller pedal like on the FBV? $500 for a practice amp? I'm setup to do most of what it does already just with my android phone, whatever pod I decide to use and Bluetooth speaker.
  19. I am disappointed that Workbench - HD500 compatibility is taking so long. I appreciate that they delivered Workbench before it has that but it's been awhile and I'm getting worried.
  20. I understand what you're saying but I'm not talking about my bell bottoms flapping in the wind. It' a very hard thing to describe but it is there (to me anyway). Keep in mind I have played very few tube amps and don't own one and never have. Mostly sims (Sans Amp, digitech 2101, etc.) and solid state amps (JC120) or a solid state preamp with a tube power amp (Music Man 130 head. Remeber those? I'm old) . So when I do play a tube amp I do "feel" the difference I tried to describe. It doesn't sound different, it just feels different. I don't know how else to put it. And it has always been a better playing experience for me. But I like to have a library of different sounds and since I don't have millions of dollars to get any tube amp I want, the difference isn't enough for me to get just one tube amp, so I'm sticking with the amp sims and am VERY happy. But I do sense, feel, whatever you want to call it, the difference. If you don't, it doesn't mean I'm more sensitive than you. But don't try to tell me I have'nt experience what I have. As I think about it, feedback is something that is very different between them. I was able to get and control feedback easier with a total tube amp than I am with any of the other things described. Gosh that brings back a very fond memory. Not that you can't get and control feedback with anything else, but I did have that experience with a tube amp. It was so apparent to me because I don't normally play fully tubed amps. It was like I was affecting the tubes themselves with my movements whereas with an amp, not fully tubed I didn't get that feeling even half as much. This probably still sounds like jibberish to you and I apologize. But every time I get the rare chance to play a tube amp, that "feel" is always there that is not there with anything I have. What do I have that I play through ampwise (or direct)? Vetta (upgraded to II) Pod XT, Pod XT Live, Pod X3, Pod HD, Sans Amp, Digitech 2101, Ampulator (sp?), Rockman Distortion Unit, JC120, Music Man HD 130 (my first amp). Am I crazy or has anyone else experienced what I've tried to describe?
  21. I absolutely agree with lollipop. But there is a, for lack of a better word, feel that I have gotten from a tube amp that I think is what all the tube snobs are talking about. It's nothing anyone can hear. It's just how the amp feels to the player when playing it. That's why they pretty much fail at a side by side blind test. Myabe if they were the ones playing they could tell but ears alone. No.
  22. There are three things that would make the Vetta perfect for me. 1) JTV Variax compatibility. I just want it to do what the old Variax's could do. I don't need the new stuff. Just the ability to select and save models from the edit program. 2) Ability to move FX loop before the amps like the X3 and HD do. 3) Ability to use both the analog and Variax inputs at the same time like the X3 and HD do. I don't know how much of this would just be a software programming issue and how much can't be done because of physical limitations. I do know this essentially means it would be done for free. Maybe some Vetta owners who have programming ability (like Armin) would be willing to volunteer to do it with Line 6's help. Maybe none of it is possible due to physical limitations. Just saying it would be nice.
  23. I like this iimplementation. Wish I'd known about it earlier. Now about the HD500, Workbench compatability................... :(
  24. If Line 6 only considers this a limitation then that indicates to me there is a chance it won't happen. If they have decided that HD Workbench connectivity will not happen then let me know. If they're still working on it, great. But if they've stopped and won't be implementing it, it would at least be courteous to let me know so.
  25. Use two spoons and a towel. Put the end of each spoon opposite each other under the edge of the knob with a towel underneath to protect the instrument. Then just lever (pry) each side up with the spoons. Hope this makes sense.
