1. The presets were made with a particular guitar, output (amp, FRFR, etc), and player touch. Chances are your rig and your style don't come close to theirs. 2. As other have said, what is gold to some is crap to someone else. For instance, I could care less about the latest hi-gain metal chunk-a-chunk sound. I'm not saying it's a bad sound... Just not my style. 3. It's all in the touch. What sort of tones are you interested in? And, yeah, I agree that I haven't yet found an awesome custom tone yet that's just like what I want. But I'm not expecting to either for all the reasons above. I download the presets just to see what others are doing to get ideas on how to sculpt what I want to hear. I think it's amazing what people think The Edge sounds like,... not even close to what I hear :) (And I'll bet other people hearing my recreation would say pretty much the same thing :) )

Man, I still don't have enough time to learn to use what we've already got. The update frequency has been just fine for me. While I appreciate new functionality, updating is also a bit of a distraction. Plus, whose to say those employees will be tasked to Helix?

Ahh, that makes sense.. though, why didn't the HD500 overdrive them? Be that as it may, the impedance of the 840's is 44 ohms. Seems relatively low to me, is there something I can do to not overdrive them... Or is that just turn down the volume knob? But what if that is too quiet? I'll check when I get home.

Yeah, I'm getting the same issue. Not sure what the problem is. I'm using Shure SRH840's. I never had a problem using my headphones with my HD500 bean. Signal always sounded great. With my Helix, while the signal sounds great out of my L2t or my amp or my JBL LSR305's, it's impossible to listen to in my headphones. All crackly and clipping sounding. I haven't tried in a while, I'll look again tonight as I'm getting better at getting around in the Helix. I haven't filed a ticket yet because it could well be a setting I haven't figured out yet.

Just so you can get your head around your output, I highly recommend setting up a truly stereo signal (i.e. one clean amp left, one distorted amp right) and then pan your last output block left and right. I discovered an issue by doing this. I had connected my L2t with XLR left (mono)(note the hint here), and to the front of my amp clean channel with 1/4 Right (I tried an XLR with an XLR to TRS 1/4 adapter to my amp, but signal level to the amp was way too low and distorted), and it turned out that the signal to the L2t was the summed to mono signal. So I realized if you want stereo left, you have to connect to both sides of either the 1/4 or XLR, or both. I didn't try just connecting an empty XLR to the right to fool the Helix. Point is, when setting up your signal path, make sure you pan left and right and get what you expect.

I was kind of half joking... I mean, of all the things I could complain about? kinda the point ;) But, yeah, those strap handles are ok... when I said top handle, I meant end handle I guess. Imagine the bag is stored in the trunk of your hatchback, sitting on it's "back" and you want to pull it out lengthwise from my car... there's nothing to grab to pull it out with. The plastic handle is in the wrong place balance-wise to pull from. And those straps aren't well placed to pull it out lengthwise. A heavily stitched handle on the end of the bag would be perfect. Plus, I find myself wanting to pick it up from the end a lot, too. To use those strap handles, you have to lay the bag down on its back. Every suitcase I've ever owned has one, this one should, too. I imagine they were afraid people would rip it off since the speaker is kind of heavy for its size. And since I'm here, it also would have been better if the wheels were on the outside and not two inches inboard from the edge of the bag... It tends to tip over when I'm pulling it on its wheels. Again, super nit-picky points. I'm super happy the speaker came with bag, I was totally not expecting that for $500 total price. And it really is a solid bag, it should last quite awhile as canvas bags go. And other than those issues, it works great and really protects the speaker.

I just had the same issue during a live band recording senario (we like to record our jam sessions). Tried recording the Helix using S/PDIF into an interface last night. I didn't have time to really sit down and understand the whole routing scheme and associated options for controlling levels from the various outputs of the Helix. My setup L2t connected to Left XLR, amp connected to right 1/4 output, Les Paul connected to Guitar in, JTV-69 connected to VDI (one of them volume set to zero depending on which guitar is being used). Helix connected to computer through USB (I may have disconnected this at some point, remembering there was some situation that turned off one of the outputs so you couldn't create an infinite feedback loop). S/PDIF connected to Focusrite 6i6. Focusrite 6i6 set as input for DAW (Mixcraft 7). I couldn't figure out how to get reasonable gain from the S/PDIF channels, Volume knob on the Helix was at about half. After recording, I had to boost the S/PDIF track by about 12 to 18 dB to get reasonable gain from it. I'm assuming I needed to disconnect it from the Volume Knob to get close to true 0 dB levels from it into the interface? Can I do that if I want the Volume knob to control multiple outputs? (I'm trying to avoid using an XLR to 1/4 adapter cable, I hate extra connections) Can I still use the S/PDIF output if I have the Helix connected to my computer by USB (so I can use the Editor)?

Speaking of the rolling bag... The used L2t I bought surprisingly came with the rolling bag. My biggest complaint... The rolling bag doesn't have a carry handle on the top! Think I'll have to add that in myself. (Hint Hint Line 6). That handle would be super useful for pulling the speaker out of my car, picking it up for a short carry, etc.. I keep finding myself missing it. But it does have a roller bag handle like on suitcases, and the side handle is ok for lugging it up stairs. I will say it is heavier than I expected (not complaining tho)...Also, much louder than I expected... Still working on dialing in my tone (I've gotten other tones I like, just not "my" tone yet)... But that's all me and learning how to use the rig. I know I'll get there. And I am having a blast learning about and playing with the 10's of thousands of dollars of equipment I just bought for less than $2k by getting the Helix and L2t, all in one little package. Wish there were more hours in a day.

Hi, Anybody have any hints on how to set up the Deluxe Comp to approximate a BOSS CS-3 or Mad Professor Forest Green Sustain/Compression knob? Level is easy... Attack on the CS-3? Is that equivalent to the Attack knob on the Deluxe Comp, or does it also change some other parameters, too? (like Knee, etc.) I'm assuming I'd have to add an EQ after it to approximate the Tone knob on each pedal. What does the Sustain / Compression Switch technically do on the Forest Green? Thanks, Tom

Still need the quarter inch cable inserted with the battery when connected through the USB to a computer. Took me a bit to realize that and couldn't understand why my computer couldn't recognize the Variax was attached with a fully charged battery and Line 6 updater knew it was connected, but not the USB driver. Plugged in a 1/4 cable and it was good to go.... (don't need to connect it to anything, acts like a stompbox does, needs a quarter inch cable to be able to turn on.)

Helix Amp Model Gallery - Real Controls vs Invented

Gotta love that the website changed D*ck Denney's name to Lollipop Denney :-/ -
While it may seem logical to us to think they could just tell us what they are working on, look at it from their point of view.... The reason they are working on stuff and it's not included now is that it's not working now. There is no guarantee that it will work to their satisfaction. In the end, they may scrap whatever it is they are working on and move on to something else. So... until what they are working on is finished and ready for release, they are not going to tell us what they are working on because the last thing they want is to engender all the negative hype they will get for not releasing what they "promised" would be released, and then don't. I think there are also legal reasons involved as well, but I don't know what they are. So, while I agree with you it would be nice, "It ain't gonna happen"... Sorry P.S. DI has said something similar to this many times. 'Tis logical, and I believe him and understand their point of view

Well, from this buyer's point of view, I'd prefer that they wait until the last second to release this stuff. It means they'll be able to cram every last feature and bug fix they can into the product before it's shipped. And I love that they are talking about it before it's shipped because, basically, having read many of the threads here and at TGP, I already know what's going into the product and how to use it... I'm pretty sure that when you're be able to buy the product, you'll be able to read the manual....
-
Wow, really looks like you needed to read the manual....

When was that??? I'm pretty sure that American cars were rusting out in a couple years since day one, and it was only the introduction of the higher quality Japanese cars in the 80's that changed that... In my experience, planned obsolescence is actually less prevelant now, or rather, products are designed to last longer today than they ever have been. Heck, lots of people out there still using their L6 XT's or whatever they are as far as I can tell.... #justsayin'....

In the initial Helix product demo, that watery/glassy chorussy sound at about 2:00 minutes in, what effects would be used to build that tone? Univibe? Chorus? Thanks, Tom

Does it come with a case? Is there a road case option for it?

I don't get the "capacitive touch" foot switches. Are we supposed to use this barefoot?

Some people were complaining this afternoon it didn't work on Chrome. But did on Firefox or IE. I had the opposite experience. The video wouldn't play on Firefox for me. The site worked better overall on Chrome for me, but about 2 minutes into the video, the video crapped out on me. I'm imagining the problem was too many people were trying to hit the site, and L6's server is crapping out. Just a guess, tho.... I see you posted at 9:18 pm EST, just in time for folks on the other coast to be getting home from work and checking it out...

I'm somewhat upset, Musician's Friend/GC are out of stock on the DT50 1x12, which likely would have been my choice (killer deal at $650). My main concern, besides my total lack of cash at the moment, though is the weight of the amp. Wow. I checked one out at GC and it was HEAVY. For me, using an HD500 is all about LOSING the weight. How heavy are the L2T's etc?
-
Wow! Thanks so much for all the detail and description of your debugging. What do you think is the root cause of the issues? Do you think the failed cap caused the failed diode? Or vice versa? Or perhaps intermittent signal problems from the cracked solder at the knobs caused the components to fail? Perhaps we should treat the knobs with more care since apparently they aren't supported enough and therefore cause board failure? Given the price on Musician's Friend/GC, I'm considering getting a DT50 112.... So thanks for all this info. And of course I've only got an HD-Bean, so I'll have to pick up a 500(X), too...

Attention Line 6 some honest feedback from a new user..pros and cons
FlyingsCool replied to awesomejohn7's topic in POD HD
Is that true that a good preset will sound good from one person to the next? Perhaps using Variax gear, but change the guitar from Les Paul to a Strat, and then go further with custom pickups, and most likely one preset will sound completely different from one person to the next. Not to mention the differences between what one person thinks sounds good to another's....- 45 replies
