I also use an L2m as a monitor on stage. When I first started using it I would connect it via L6 LINK but now I use the 1/4 output instead to my L2m and XLR out to the FOH. My rationale is that way when I am using global EQ it is also reflected in the L2m which gives me a better idea of what the FOH sounds like. As stated here by others the L6 LINK bypasses the global EQ. I have tried going direct to the FOH with the Helix and just using vocal monitors for my guitar monitoring but I am also a singer and I find that additionally having the L2m for my guitar monitor means I can crank it up a bit without making my vocals and the rest of the band mix harder to hear in the vocal monitors. The rest of the band can also hear my guitar better without having it blasting through their monitors. Additionally and maybe even more importantly the L2m makes it much easier for me to get guitar feedback (the good kind) when I want it.

Here is a link to the free IRs provided by Line6 themselves for the Helix. Nice to have a few direct from the source. Thank you Zooey for your recent post about them elsewhere which prompted me to add them here as well. http://line6.com/allure/

I think Phil_m is correct, you may cause yourself issues down the line. You always want to make a backup of your current presets (and IRs) with the version of the Editor that matches your currently installed firmware before you do a firmware/Editor upgrade. I am not sure of the impact of rolling back now and trying to do a backup with your old firmware and Editor version as your presets have now gone through the rebuilding process on the new firmware but it might be worth a shot. At the very least you should backup up all your favorite presets individually. so that if you do have problems going forward you may be able to fix them by editing the text directly (individual presets are backed up in text format). You can back up all the presets in a setlist individually by highlighting them and hitting the "Export" link. If you decide you don't want to roll back and go through the proper sequence of steps for an upgrade, I would recommend you don't proceed on the current firmware without doing a global reset. Backup everything first and then do a global reset and restore of your backups. Phil_m pretty much covered it, you are opening yourself up for a world of mysterious assorted weird behavior and freezes by not following the proper instructions for an upgrade. Until instructed differently by L6 you must always run a global reset after a firmware upgrade. They are working on changing the upgrade process so this requirement may go away in future versions of the firmware but for now you may spare yourself a lot of grief by running the global reset.

Eric Clapton let it rain tone guide for Honestopinion
HonestOpinion replied to CBTL's topic in Helix
Great job and incredibly kind of you CBTL! We have a gig coming up for St. Patrick's day and "Let It Rain" is in the set list so this preset will get an audience in a bit under a week. I have downloaded it and I am tweaking it for my rig. Thank you for putting the effort and attention to detail into this! You are a phenomenal resource on the forum and most generous with your time. The check is in the mail... :) -
Is this happening only when the USB is plugged in, if so, reboot your computer and try a different USB port. Make sure you have the firmware and the Editor version matched up. If you have firmware version 2.12 you should have the 2.11 version of the Editor. Also, does this happen on every preset? You may want to try recreating the preset if it is only one causing the problem. If this happens continuously, particularly without the USB plugged in I would back everything up again, download the latest software again, back everything up and reflash the firmware. Make sure to do the global reset after reflashing. Good luck!

If you are on Windows 10 download the "Helix" application and install it. This will install the Updater, Editor, and Windows driver. The link is here: http://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=7278 If you have a different OS version pull up the "Helix" application for your OS on the downloads page and do the same as above. Make sure you have done the global reset for your new firmware if you want everything to work properly with the new Editor. Hopefully you backed up any presets and IRs you wanted to keep previously.

Both paths are 'active' for all snapshots. Not in front of my Helix at the moment but I think you could assign the level parameter in the output blocks to snapshots for each path and dial the one you want to be off in the snapshot down to -120db. That way you would only have audible level on the path you want active in each snapshot. You could also use various routing schemes to switch between one path and the other by for example bypassing a send block on one path in a snapshot.

I am happy just being ambi'dextrose', I can eat dessert with either hand... :P -
The first think I would try is alternate USB ports, including switching other USB peripherals around to different ports.

A bundle exports all your presets on the Helix including the Factory and Templates presets. That is why many people don't use a bundle to restore as it overwrites any new Factory/Templates presets that might have come with the new firmware version with the ones from your saved bundle. Of course, if you modify your presets "in place" in the Factory lists you may want to use a bundle restore. My strategy and many others here has always been to create my presets in the User setlists and copy any over from the Factory lists to the User lists that I may want to modify. When it comes time for a firmware upgrade I restore my User setlists instead of a bundle. I always save a bundle just to be thorough as a last line of defense for restores in case all else fails but I never use them for restores. There are a couple of advantages to saving not only setlists but the individual presets as well - if your setlist backup has an issue you have an alternative method for restoring your presets, additionally if one or more of the presets in a setlist has issues you can analyze the contents of your presets and potentially fix them because as FlyingCool pointed out they are in text format. I am on Windows 10 but it looks like FlyingCool answered the question in the affirmative regarding whether the 2.12 firmware works (with the Editor) on Windows 7.

I hear you, I have never been one to pander with having the band sing "Happy Birthday" and the like but a courteous nod to folks out to celebrate St. Patrick's won't hurt. :)
-
Thank you most kindly! Our band cycles in different Clapton tunes periodically including his version of 'Crossroads', 'Layla', and 'Badge'. Definitely a rich back catalog there. :)

Great stuff, anything in there for the original snappy studio version of "After Midnight" or "Let It Rain"? :)

Helix FW 2.20 (The "Get Low" Update) OUT NOW
HonestOpinion replied to Digital_Igloo's topic in Helix
My sincere sympathies go out to all left-handed guitarists subject to the market realities of lower sales numbers for left-handed merchandise which result in a dramatically more constrained range of choices. My compliments to cchimi for expressing his frustration with great restraint and courtesy. Both his and Line6's points are legitimate and there is no simple resolution here. Maybe what the southpaw community needs is an arts foundation for funding custom designed instruments for left-handed musicians. Otherwise I don't know how else the left-handed community gets relief in the near term short of a law that mandates that anything that requires a dominant hand to operate be made in right and left handed versions. Maybe in the future 3D printing will offer manufacturers an inexpensive solution that won't require mirrored redundant machinery and additional machining of parts for lefties. That should finally offer this under-served but significant portion or the population (10%) some well-deserved options. In the meantime, we should encourage any manufacturer who can make a profit, even with a greatly reduced margin, to do their best to serve this part of our community, particularly in the arts. A tax credit for producing left handed merchandise would probably be very helpful as well. -
You might want to look into the many posts here and elsewhere on how to use the 4 cable method. As rvroberts pointed out you must have either a guitar cab or a loadbox attached to the Fender head when you run it. I assume you are going to want to run the Fender into a cab ultimately or why even bother having it in your signal chain. You never want to even turn a guitar head or amp on without having a speaker or load connected first; even if the amp has a headphone output. Doing this can damage the head/amp quite quickly, faster with some than others. Without loading any amp's speaker output with sufficient impedance you risk damaging the amp as they always require a load, preferably with the proper impedance. Some heads/amps are more tolerant of running into a lower impedance than they are rated for but every head/amp I have ever encountered is meant to be run with some kind of load. The Helix inputs are definitely NOT designed with the proper impedance for an amp speaker output Additionally, as spikey mentioned, you never want to apply the high level of signal output from any amplifier's speaker output directly to a Helix input. This might easily damage the Helix. If you don't want to use the 4 cable method you could always connect the Helix's ouput directly to the Fender head's guitar input but you still have to make sure the Fender has a guitar cab or loadbox attached to the Fender's speaker output. There is a 4 Cable method template in the Helix's Templates list. I have always thought that a core feature with "smart" speakers with various DSP parameters should be that when you are connected digitally with, in this case L6 Link, the Helix should have a screen or just an area perhaps on the Helix's output block where the speaker settings are indicated and can be changed remotely from the Helix. I think you may be able to do this for instance with the Behringer X32 boards when connected to a Turbosound IQ speaker although they may require a PC and USB connection for remote operation, not sure. Either way it would nice to see bi-directional communication between digital devices, at the very least ones made by the same company. Changing the speaker settings would be more convenient and more likely to be double-checked if you did not have to flip the speaker around and could manage them from the Helix.

Helix FW 2.20 (The "Get Low" Update) OUT NOW
HonestOpinion replied to Digital_Igloo's topic in Helix
Your general sentiment here makes a lot of sense to me regarding modeling top notch amps and effects, especially expensive ones that would be inaccessible to many otherwise. However, I don't like packing a huge pedalboard full of extra cabling, power supply(s) and lots of additional things to go wrong. Therefor for me I prefer that as many great amps/effects, vintage and expensive (or not), be included, especially the ones that are most likely to be used. My days of carrying 4x12 Marshall stacks and 55lb pedalboards and ridiculously over-engineered PAs are I hope over. These days I minimize my rig so I welcome any model added that sounds good and is usable on the Helix. I don't know if polyphonic effects are coming to this version of the Helix or not but I think they would be a great addition, even to already existing models like the whammy and 3 Osc Synth. In general I would love to see a little bit more in the way of guitar synth capability on the Helix, at least enough to easily dial in some basic alternate instrument emulations like sax, flute, harmonica as these instruments pop up in enough solos to be incredibly useful. Not disagreeing with you, just think priorities regarding what should be modeled differ according to whether the Helix is being used primarily for studio or stage and also according to how much extra equipment the player is willing to maintain, drag along, and connect and manage at performances. With that said the Helix is certainly outfitted for optimal ease of use with external equipment and those that use it that way are probably getting the most out of it. I agree the HM-2 or a couple of good distortion effects with EQ geared towards a more metal sound would probably be a good addition. -
Good point from shanegriffo, it should have occurred to me first that this might be a result of the interaction with the DAW, perhaps a latency, driver, or hardware issue. I assumed the reference to Cubase was simply a description of how the problem was captured, bad assumption. Is this happening only when used with Cubase or do you get this issue occurring when going direct out to headphones or speakers/cabs?

Could a delay or reverb time setting, or perhaps compressor's release setting be too long?

Help setting up 2x L/R outs. 1 with speaker IR, 1 without.
HonestOpinion replied to rick_hollis's topic in Helix
You are right in that in addition to having a "Global Cab/IR Off" option it would be ideal to be able to assign the global option to a given output, e.g. 1/4, XLR, Send 1, etc.. The trick may be how do you provide two stereo signals, one with cab/IR bypassed via global option and one using the cab/IR and not be forced to dramatically increase your DSP usage. I think that a lot of the users perhaps the preponderance, who use a guitar cab rather than an FRFR, run mono to their guitar amp/cab onstage. For them the "Global Cab/IR Off" would be a most useful feature, even if it only resulted in the stage feed being mono. For those who want one stereo feed with cab and one without, things definitely seem to get trickier. However, other modeling devices have managed to implement global cab bypass options so perhaps it can be done without requiring a significant increase in DSP usage, even if takes the ideal form of being able to assign a with or without cab/IR signal in stereo if so configured to the output of your choice.
