  1. Yeah.. not sure what the problem was. But until I removed all traces of the HD500X stuf... I would get either the BSOD or the Helix app wouldn't "see" my Helix. Odd. On a more positive note... looks like the crew at Sweetwater upgraded my Helix to 2.12 before it got to me. There was a note inside about them opening it up. And candy.
  2. A few hours in... and this thing is awesome! It arrived Saturday, but I only got a chance to open it all up this morning. I've spent most of the day rebuilding the tones I need for rehearsal tomorrow.. and I can't believe just how quickly you can build tones on the Helix. What took so long on the HD500x takes just a few minutes on the Helix. Now.. I did have issues getting the SW up and running on my PC. Evidently, the Asus xFAST USB app and Helix don't play well. Also... an important note from those migrating from the HD500X: Make sure you remove all of the old HD drivers and SW first. I had the hardest time getting it all to work until I deleted all of the HD500X stuff first. Now I'm moving blocks around... trying new configurations... it's a blast. Now for the question. Let's say you are in the Factory bank and find a patch that's close to what you want. You start tweaking it, adding stuff... changing stuff... and then you have something you like more. How do you then save what's the "edit buffer" to a NEW preset under one of the USER banks? I know how to copy a preset from a bank to a bank... but can't get how to save an existing "edit" to a new preset. Amy I missing something?
  3. For me... I went from using my Vetta II 2x12 combo as a powered speaker setup (via the FX loop)... to using a set of Alto PA speakers. And the Altos were the best choice by far. I don't do the heavy that much, but the Altos do the trick for me.
  4. Running an amp into another amp.. nice idea! Man.. coming from the HD500X world... I'm going to have to open my mind to all sorts of new routing possibilities when my Helix gets here.
  5. Most curious to see how the 4-Osc synth works... got a song with the band that could use a bit of the "Taurus Treatment." Will you be able to assign the pitches to the foot switches?
  6. Just heard about this... and very curious how it might work for those of us who do the FRFR thing. The demo video is all singer/acoustic guitar stuff.. so no real idea of how it might work with Helix/other modelers. The 180-degree dispersal does look appealing. https://www.lrbaggs.com/speaker/synapse-personal-pa-system
  7. I don't have my Helix just yet (it's on the truck as we speak).. but to my ear sounds like a Fuzz pedal or a input being overloaded. Maybe even a small amp being pushed into power amp saturation.
  8. You might also try playing with the Output mode (under the Setup menu) for different sounds. From section 2*8 of the manual: Combo Power Amp & Stack Power Amp: For connecting to the power amp of a combo or head amp. TIP: When using the Combo or Stack options and connecting into a tube amplifier, we also recommend that you choose a Preamp Model from the Amp Model menu (rather than one of the “Full†Amp Models). HD Preamp Models include no power amp emulation, making them typically better suited for this connection. That said, there is no wrong choice! PODs have always been about flexibility... Check out all the possibilities and decide which Models work best for your tone!
  9. Sure.. you can do a Exp pedal for this... and it would give you a whole lot of other options. I was just thinking out loud... and what could be done for super cheap with stuff I might already have here at the house. Side note: I've got my old Mission Exp pedal that was for the HD500X... but I never ended up using it. Any reason it wouldn't work with the Helix?
  10. While I wait patiently for my Helix to be delivered.. I had a thought... Can you use an external footswitch to use as a solo boost? My reasoning behind this is that I've got big feet... and many is the time I've hit FS8 on my HD500x (which I always have set to a volume boost for solos) and hit the TAP tempo or something else instead. Let's say you have the foot switch plugged into say.. EXT 3 - something like the Roland FS-5L. When when the switch is open you get a value of A, when the switch is closed.. you get a value of B. This is not too dissimilar from a controller pedal that moves between value A to B and back. But in this case, you get no in-between settings. So... could you set it up such that a volume block is assigned to Ext 3, and then using the MIN and MAX values could give you a selectable amount of control to toggle solo and not? Just curious... more of a thought exercise while I wait. Way back in the old days, I made a little box with a 1meg pot and a switch to bypass it to use as a poor-man's solo boost. I would set the volume loud with the switch bypassed, then dial it down with the pot for the "rhythm" mode.
  11. Thanks for the tip. I did see this.. and after re-reading the instructions and the pinned post.. I figured this out. It does take a bit of attention to figure it out, however. You have to look a bit to see that the Helix app installs all the bits you need... but the instructions reference the Line 6 Updater for the FW update. Still... beat the old days of cracking open the AxSys and putting in a new PROM chip.
  12. All, I've just took the plunge, clicked the mouse... and ordered my Helix and a Novation case for it (See http://line6.com/support/topic/25430-helix-casebag/) Assuming the unit I get doesn't have 2.12 on it - which I'm pretty certain it wont - I can just download the latest FW from http://line6.com/software/ and go strait to the update process, yes? I don't have any patches, set lists, or IRs at this point... so there should be no need to back up with the FW version it comes with first... correct? I never had an issue with my HD500x updates... but I know the Helix has a bit more to deal with over the HD500x, so just double checking before it arrives. Looking forward to a whole new world!

    6, 7 or 8?

I've been using a set of M-Audio BX8a for a good number of years now, and I think they are a great bang for the buck. That being said, I did spend about 2-hours last year helping my friend get a pair of monitors for his setup. We played a bunch of music we were both really familiar with off of his and my iPhone listening to a bunch of different monitors. To my ear, the Yamaha HS10s beat the JBL LSRs and many of the others. If I could go back in time.. I would probably get the HS10s YMMV
  14. Try using the stereo delay.. R set to 1/4 and L set to .8th. Then place a mono effect after (like a compressor set to not compress or the noise gate set super low)it to sum it to mono.
  15. Alas no... they are separate beasts. The new Helix app will let you do this, but not so with the HD500. As far as recording... you can either plug the outs of the HD500 into your UR22, or you can use the HD500 as your interface.
  16. Alas the Zappa house is divided on this. Ahmet and Diva (who have the controlling interest in the ZFT) are for it.. and Dweezil and Moon are not. Gail - from what I have read - was not great at the finance side of things and the ZFT is in debt. The house was sold... so the "vault" is no more.. but hopefully the tapes have been relocated somewhere safe and protected. It's really sad that Ahmet and Diva are trying to make themselves look like the "saviors of Zappa" when it's really been Dweezil out there doing the shows and keeping Frank's music alive.
  17. Love me some Zappa! I never got the chance to see him live unfortunately. I've got my tix for Dweezil in April in SF. This will be the 4th time I've seen him.. and he never disappoints!
  18. Certainly in the old, old days, I was basically a two sound guy: clean and dirty... with "dirty" being controlled by the volume on the guitar. Now I've got about 15 patches I use with my band at this point. They kind of break down like kind of this: Cleans - Two different clean sounds. One Blackface Dbl based, and one JC120. Different levels of verb an chorus. Dirtys - 3-4 flavors of crunch. Some are Marshall-esq, some AC30...different cabs, FX, and levels of crunch. Special - These are for covers that have a pretty distinct guitar-sound that I'm attempting to emulate (Day Tripper, Brian May tone, etc.) It does take some work keeping the volumes the same between. I've pretty much got them worked out... but it did take up time at rehearsal with the band to get there. You can certainly get away with one clean and one dirty tone.. but I think it's better if you can tailor the sound a bit to each tune, or group of tunes.
  19. Changing the Output mode changes how the sound is sent out.. it has nothing to do with the noise. Each setting changes the sound of the output to "optimize" it for the destination; Recording/FRFR setup, Guitar Amp input, or Amp Power amp (aka FX Return). You might try experimenting with this setting if you are running the output directly into your amps FX Return.. each setting will give you a different sound. The manual say that the "Combo Power Amp & Stack Power Amp" setting is the best for the FX loop... but you might try other setting.... no wrong way of doing it.
  20. First... do you have the Pod's mono out going into your amp's effect SEND or your amp's or effect RETURN? I can't tell from your post... but it should be into your amps effect RETURN. So to the rest... Having it set up as Guitar>Pod>Mono Out>Amp effect RETURN does indeed bypass the amps pre-amp. The 4 Cable Method (4CM) let's you use different combinations of your amps pre-amp, your Pod's amp sims, and FX either in-front of your amp's pre-amp (or after) or bypass your pre-amp altogether. However, it does take a bit more time to setup. Here is a pretty good dive into how it all works: http://guitargearfinder.com/guides/use-four-cable-method/ There is also a tone of into here on the forum... just do a search for it.
  21. Unless you need to do long cable runs, the difference between the XLR output and the 1/4" into your interface/DAW is negligible. That being said.. the XLRs don't "sum to mono" like the 1/4" outs do. So if you want the XLR out in mono... you need to rethink the patches that use stereo effects and change them over to mono. Or.. if you have and open slot.. insert a mono effect as your last item in the FX chain - that will do the trick as well.
  22. Nice work! One of these day I outta trade up to the Helix.
  23. Unfortunately it looks like the Audient ID14 only has a Optical for it's digital IN. So you will need to SPDIF to Optical (AKA Toslink) convert if you want to go digital OUT from the HD500X. There are a bunch out there and many aren't that expensive: https://www.amazon.com/Signal-Converters/b/ref=dp_bc_5?ie=UTF8&node=306896011
  24. No. MIDI is data, and not control voltages. To do MIDI switching on an amp that doesn't speak MIDI (but has channel switching jacks) you need something like the Amp Gizmo or something similar. Here are a few: http://www.rjmmusic.com/products/mini-amp-gizmo/ http://www.soundsculpture.com/footsim http://www.voodoolab.com/controlswitcher.htm
