I run them unbalanced at home and at rehearsal. Friday the 26th will be my first "real gig" with them.. and I haven't figured out just yet how I'm going to run them. More than likely I will do one unbalanced (mono) for my side of the stage, and a the other balanced (just because I have a long XLR) as a monitor fill on the other side of the stage for our other guitarist. The place is small, so I probably wont feed the house PA directly. None of the other instruments are going to be in the PA more than likely - just the vocals - so it would sound a bit odd to only have my guitar in there.

So here is one of the best images I have found describing the 4cm wiring layout... You will more than likely need to adjust the HD500X FX LOOP Send and Return levels levels going to the INPUT of your amp, and to your amp's RETURN to keep the sound consistent. This is also a good guide... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZtY8bS-GQ0

The '68 Wiener Mobile had much better sound than what's driving around today.

This is - for me at least - not worth the effort. I have a PreSonus FP10 FireWire interface already hooked up to my PC, and my M-Audio BX8a monitors already hooked up to the FP10. Switching everything around is a major PITA, so the using the SPDIF option is the was to go. My FP10 is dialed in and works really well.. so using the HD500x as the interface is just a bunch of extra work. YMMV

Does Sweetwater charge extra for the bug on the screen - (13:25 - 13:58)? ;)

Damn. This thing look awesome... and now comes the G.A.S. and mixed feelings of disappointment. I've only had the HD500X for about 4 months... an now we have Helix. If I had known it was coming, I probably would have waited to buy. Have I really enjoyed the HD500X and all the tones I've been getting? VERY much; some of the best I've ever had. Does the HD500X do 90% of everything I need.... Yup. So.. I'm going to sit and watch it go by for now. But... I'd be lying if I didn't have lust in my heart for the Helix.

You can use any volume pedal. But an external CONTROL pedal... the EXP-1 is really the best one.

I've got the TS110A, and I've been experimenting with the Global EQ quite a bit. I'm 85% convinced that if I use the High Cut in the GEQ set to 9KHz, I get a much better sound overall. "Traditional" guitar cabinets typically don't have a huge amount of energy above 9KHz (they drop off steeply after about 5KHz), so using the EQ has tamed a bit of the overall fizzy top end, but still given me a good high-end for the squeeky-clean patches. You might try that.

I did listen to the DBR at GC when I bought my Altos. It's quite good. But for me, price was the big motivator. I don't gig with my band very often (it's just for fun), so I couldn't justify the costs of the Yamaha or Line6 speakers. Also for my needs, the L2M was a bit overkill. YMMV.

Appendix B-3 from the Advanced guide... it's very similar to what the HD500 sends: POD HD500X will respond to incoming MIDI Bank & Program Change messages as follows. Load Set List: From your MIDI controller device, send a Bank Change CC0 (Bank MSB), CC32 (LSB) message with a value of 0 (for Setlist 1), 1 (for Setlist 2), etc., followed by a Program Change message (Value 0-63 for Preset 01A - 16D) for the desired Preset within the Set List. The Set List and Preset are loaded on POD HD500X. Load a Preset within the current Set List: Send a Program Change message (Value 0-63 for Preset 01A - 16D) for the desired Preset within the current Set List.

Here is what I could glean from both manuals… somewhat paraphrased: The HD500x sends fixed Program Change (PC) messages over MID for each preset with Values from 0 to 64. The specific value is determined by the current Bank (e.g. - for Bank 1 these four footswitches send Values 0 - 3, for Bank 2 they send Values 4 - 7, etc.) On the Torpedo CAB, each preset has a single program number. Preset 01 of the machine is triggered by receiving MIDI PC 00. You can address the 100 presets (from 01 to 00 meaning 100), with MIDI PC 00 to MIDI PC 99. So what you will need to do is map which HD500 preset should go with which Torpedo CAB presets. For instance: If you select Bank 2, preset #2 on the HD500X it will send MIDI PC 05. The Torpedo CAB would get the MIDI PC 5 message, and change to Preset 6 (a bit confusing because MIDI uses PC 00 for what we would think of as Preset #1.) On the Torpedo CAB, you would want to make sure that the IR you wanted for that HD500X patch (Bank 2, Preset 2 in this example) was copied to the 6th Preset on the CAB. So the mapping is: HD500 CAB Bank 1, Preset 1 (PC 00) -> Preset 1 Bank 1, Preset 2 (PC 01) -> Preset 2 Bank 1, Preset 3 (PC 02) -> Preset 3 Hope this helps.

To the best of my knowledge, the HD500x only does MIDI over the MIDI ports... not over USB.

Has anybody uploaded clean, crunch and heavy patches for ALL the HD amps?

And that's just the stock versions... didn't even included the new packs and what they bring to the table. -

8 mics x 17 speaker cabs... 136 possible amp/speaker settings per amp. 30 amps x 136 possible amp/speaker settings... 4080 total combinations. Assuming I'm doing my math right... -
Clearly you never worked at a Guitar Center ;)

Most articles I have read have been pretty favorable about the Epi versions of their older sisters. I think a really good setup on an Epi Les Paul, and an upgrade to the pickups, and most people would be very hard pressed to tell the sonic difference between each without looking.

46 here. I've been playing since I was about 12. Started my Line 6 journey with an Axsys 212 when they first came out, then the AX2 (chip and cosmetic update of the Axsys), then on to the Vetta II. Sold both pay for the Alto TS110A speakers I use with my HD500X. I have a band, but as I'm the "young one" in the band, we don't do a whole lot of gigs.... got a day job as the Web Producer for a data blending and advanced analytics software company here in the SF Bay Area.

I've got the 10" versions and really happy with them. I've had no shortage of low end, and in fact have started to roll off a bit more of the low end these days. I had read a review (sorry can't find the link) where some one had said that the bass on the 12" was a bit "flabby" compared to the 10". I can't vouch for this personally, but that would make sense. I don't think you can go wrong with either version.

When assign controllers in Edit... don't touch the pod, until you have left the Controllers screen. The Pod does 2-way communication with edit, and touching the Pod while edited can screw things up with the controllers.

Had a listen to a Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza track... Sounds like 1/2 step and flat-5 (tritone) get a bit of mileage. Use the "Pitch Glide" set to +1 (1/2 step) or +6 (tritone) with a mix of 50/50. Don't' work about trying to use the Smart Harmony. Try putting the FX block at the very beginning of your chain, before the amp.

Hey y'all.. if you are looking to go to a FRFR rig, GC has the Alto TS112As on sale fro $199 at the moment. I have a pair of the TS110A and have been really happy with them. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Alto-TS112A-12--Active-2-Way-Speaker-106721442-i2344769.gc More fat for the fire...

The DXR series are a nice bit of kit. But if you are only going to be using them 4-6 times a year,,, you might want to look at something cheaper. I've been really pleased with my Alto TS110A setup - http://www.altoproaudio.com/products/ts110a. More fat for the fire...

Dang... so much negativity... what the "F" people? If he wants to go Fractal.. let him. How does it hurt you or diminish the tones your are getting?

Updated the firmware again via Monkey, and you will get all the factory patches back. However, if your buddy didn't back up his custom patches... they may be gone into the either.
