  1. Alex Lifeson uses and endorses big fat fried flounders and fries. So I'm gonna go get some. (And I don't even know who he is!)
  2. Oh no! This old post got resurrected! And the OP is probably stuck playing his old equipment. At least he posted a purty picture senior picture of himself for his avatar.
  3. Here’s another method for mounting the Helix—bungees. I use my Helix at gigs in an fan-cooled enclosure (I control it entirely via MIDI), and equally in the studio, so I needed an easy-on, easy-off mount method. I used “ProGrip Stretch†bungees with a thread-through locking action, with no hooks to scratch anything. My hardware store only had them in yellow, but you can find them in black if you don’t like bumblebees. They look like this: I cut each bungee in two, 8†from the gripper end, knotted each tied end, melted any fraying with a match, and then firmly screwed each half to my wooden enclosure with wood screws (drill a small pilot hole through the cord first). Sorry … no photos (no time).
  4. @njglover -- my sentiments exactly .... and thanks for reposting taking the time to post your excellent review.
  5. Good call, zooey ... this one doesn't have a quick and easy answer without some deeper troubleshooting.
  6. It certainly sounds like a sample rate/clock problem .... although I'm not sure why the MIDI would get hosed along with the audio unless your whole USB stream gets corrupted or out of sync. I won't have time to try to duplicate your setup until later, but a couple of things come to mind. 1) Take the Roland out of the equation and see if anything changes. Isolate Mac ---> Helix ---> monitors. 2) I too find it odd that Audio Midi Setup only shows 48 kHz as a sample rate selection, regardless of what the rate is set at on the Helix. Its the same on my MacBook system, no matter what I set the Helix clock rate to in Global Settings. Have you tried setting everything (eg the Helix) to 48 kHz to "go along with" the setting in Audio Midi? If not, try that and see if the stream stays in sync. 3) I thought perhaps a Audio Midi Setup plist or pref file may have been corrupt, so you could trash some files ... but that wouldn't make sense if the problem reoccurs on a separate (iMac) system. It's sounding like Helix is the common naughty element. 4) Could be a bad chip in your Helix (much less likely) but can't say unless you try another Helix or one of us tries to duplicate your problem. I'll try to find time to do that this week. I sympathize because these sorts of audio/midi problems drive me nuts too...
  7. More bread & butter bass combos for studio use. Acoustic guitar IRs and preamps (agreeing with @amsden). Two part vocal harmonizer.
  8. Let's agree to disagree. I, like most, have absolutely no problems with what I perceive as an acceptable lag between patches. If I have songs in my set that have tunes that follow each other immediately, I make use of all the tones I need in a single patch. Most tunes have enough time between them to allow for complex patch changes, though, with no issue. Also, I've learned to take it avoid third-party IRs for less-critcal live use, I reserve those for use in the studio. Not picking on the OP, but when folks buy new equipment, I wish they would - buy with 30-day money-back guarantee - try it out fully to ensure it meets their needs - if it does, great! - if it doesn't, return it and try something else (rather than generalizing on the product forum about how unusable the product is)
  9. "Do you feel the Helix has enough power for its build and just as importantly, the future?" Yes.
  10. Product idea: Line 6 Tube Amp Aerosol Fragrance. (Available in Musty, Fried, Ozoned, and Toasted.)
  11. Good idea for saving block configurations....
  12. First off, thanks Line 6 gang for providing a public beta. Much appreciated. I installed successfully first time with no problems on a MacBook Pro (late 2011) running El Capitan 10.11.3. The software looks and runs without problems so far. Its very easy to navigate because it looks just like the hardware U.I. Response time is very fast on my system when editing. It would be preferred if the Helix screen would update to the currently selected block when I select a block on the editor. The visuals look very nice for a beta ... I love the stompbox and global EQ graphics. I find it much easier and faster to edit my footswitch configuration, as well as block parameters. This is going save me a lot of time. Are global settings coming? I forgot to check. I did see that block copy and paste is coming, and I hope you can copy and paste between presets and setlists. The ability to save and archive favorite block presets would be a nice feature. I can see how some might want to edit "offline" but I personally need to hear how many settings are affecting my tone, so don't need that feature. It might be useful to rearrange setlists and preset orders, though, while riding the bus to Omaha.
  13. Works fine on MacBook Pro here, running latest El Capitan.
  14. I bought my Helix for recording studio guitar and bass via a DAW. Its working so nicely that I'm selling my recording amps and a couple of mics. I soon figured out I could use the Helix as an outboard audio processor for recorded tracks via USB .... so there was no longer a need for me to shell out $500 for the Soundtoys 5 plug-in bundle I had been wanting. Yow! Now I'm close to finding out a way to use it to replace most of my solo performance rig, which includes a Behringer XR digital mixer and various guitar stomp boxes and FX units. If I could figure out a way to cook food with it, I could get some more cash for my microwave.
  15. ...and don't use a USB hub. And eat a good meal.
  16. FYI, I'm running El Capitan (latest) on a MacBook Pro, and the firmware updater using the latest Helix application runs without issues on my system. I've even hopped back and forth between the most recent and older firmware versions without any problems. Check your system and your cable. I dunno.
  17. Hate  is such an ugly word. :)
  18. ...so Helix more-looper-stuff features could accommodate enough loop time for your hungry needs, but more Mb for loops might limit Mb for memory-intensive Blocks (e.g. IR etc). There's a lot of onboard memory in the box. I'm just sayin' it would sure be nice if a future upgrade would allow more looper features for us loopers. I've already sold off a bunch of my stompboxes that the Helix replaces, but I can't let go of my looper pedal yet. Nice power Y, by the way....
  19. Interesting you use an external looper pedal when the Helix already contains a looper. But its too darned limiting so I just use it for setup testing. I use an external Boomerang III looper with mine because it allows 2 synched loops. I do wish a Helix update would permit more loop capabilities; especially a second loop option. Sixty seconds would be plenty.
  20. Frankly, as a Helix owner, I learned pretty quickly that an editor would allow me to do deep editing and setups and practices without having to kneel down over and over and over. You may understand when you own one, zooey. For a floor pedal as wonderful and rich as the Helix, an editor is essential. I hope the editor allows the ability to save and load Block presets. That would be a great option to have, and a game changer.
  21. OK, answered my own question. Using the emulation CC's works fine. External footswitches can emulate the onboard buttons. Duh. Just can't use the "learn controller." Instead, assign the footswitches as though you are using the onboard buttons.
  22. I've got a MIDI footswitch that I want to use instead of built-in pedal switches to toggle an FX block on and off, just like using the Bypass button or the built-ins. I can program the button to send any MIDI commands. Using Minotaur distortion as an example, its easy enough to assign my footswitch controller, but I only have selectable parameters such as gain, tone, and level. Can't I set up like to behave like one of the built-in toggle switches? I see that there are reserved "emulation" CCs for each footswitch (for example, CC#49 for footswitch 1). Any reason why I can't just do it that way?
  23. I've chased blues harp tone over the years as much as guitar tone, and the Helix is providing the best tone I've found outside of a musty old Fender Princeton amp. I prefer a Paul Butterfield sorta sound, using a Shure Unidyne 545 mic. Going direct into the Helix, I'm really liking the following block chain: 1) Mail Order Twin Amp/Cab, with treble and presence turned way down, drive to taste, lots of sag and bias for compression, the 57 mic at 1", and high cut set at about 4 kHz. 2) '63 Spring Reverb to taste. Straight into the PA. Yowsa!!
  24. I'm using the Helix somewhat as a mixer: multiple inputs (different instruments) with FX applied to several of the signal paths, then each path is routed through the same XLR output to a PA. I use different FX blocks for different songs via different presets. I use MIDI to control the mix of each path using a Gain block. BUT .... when I change presets, my mix (gain settings) gets changed to the stored patch levels. So I can only use Helix as a "mixer" with great FX and tones unless I stay on the same patch. Please provide a solution by either: 1) allow the passing of Gain levels between presets (I believe this works for the expression pedal so it can be done, right?) OR 2) allow user to swap FX blocks in and out of a given preset using "scenes" while the In, Out, and Gain block settings remain constant. OR 3) something else that achieves the goal :)
