Some competition for Helix... curious to see how this is received
hideout replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
I don't know man. I've taken issue with Avid ever since they bought Wizoo and M-Audio. They just shut down Wizoo and stuck me with unusable software (Latino and Darbuka) and then they stopped development of M-Audio Key-Rig. I wouldn't put it past them to try and get away with stealing. GRRRR! -

To steal from an old Porsche ad, "Helix... There is no substitute." -

What makes you doubt that it'll become a real product? -
No that happened when I was a baby! Bwahahahaha!

I go through this scenario every time I repair an iMac! Lol

It seems to me that the scribble strips on mine have always looked "dusty". It doesn't bother me when I'm playing but you can definitely see it when you're editing without the editor. Thankfully, I rarely have to make any adjustments anymore. I get the same inspiring sounds every time I play. I don't think I've ever said that about any modeler I've ever owned.

Really diggin' that Litigator! It's so flexible and can be bluesy or raunchy. Love it! I need to experiment some more with the Archetype as I've not spent enough time on it. Sadly, my Helix is pretty much my gigging rig only. My studio is "mixer-less" and requires that I turn every damned thing on even if just want to sit down and just play or practice. Good thing I got that Yamaha amp as I get very similar response out of it as I do with the Helix. Maybe not as flexible but it's equally satisfying to play. One strange thing, every time I experiment with the Helix, I usually come up with something really cool and fun but 99% of the time, I don't really have any use for it at my gigs. Kinda depressing at times.
-
To my mind, it doesn't even need to be wireless. It seems to me that just a plain old USB cable connected via a Camera Connection Kit should allow an iPad to run an editor app and connect to the Helix.

Not to worry. I didn't perceive any barbs coming at me.

Indeed. You guys do realize that Bluetooth requires Bluetooth hardware, an antenna right?

Just had a thought about this and it seems to me that a fix might be relatively simple, unless I'm crazy - which is also highly likely. What if Line6 could put in a filter that replicates what a tone knob does to the guitar sound in front of the tuner's input? The filter doesn't have to be anything special or complicated. Just a high frequency roll off filter. Am I nuts?
-
You're absolutely right, it needs fixing. And yes, I've had the misfortune of forgetting to twist that tone knob back up. For now at least, we have an crude, inelegant but somewhat effective work around.
-
Yes absolutely. The neck pickup helps a lot.
-
One workaround that seems to help a bit in my experience, is to completely roll back the tone control on your guitar. This seems to keep the upper harmonics from interfering with the fundamental pitch.
-
Indeed. I think that with the increased granularity, Line6 could decrease the tuner's sensitivity to the minute and momentary variances in the detected pitch and analyze fewer samples of the incoming pitches. The increased granularity is appreciated but trying to tune while that tuning indicator is jumping around like a hyperactive child on the day after Halloween is crazy makin'.

Thanks, Phil. I guess for a long time I never got passed the more classic models. Lol. But I'm loving the last 3 additions.
-
Is this model part of the 2.12 update? Don't recall seeing it on my Helix.
-
Does Helix do Techno? You can do anything you want to if nothing stops you.
-
Well, I would but I just don't feel enough dissatisfaction with the sounds I'm getting. And this is the first time I've ever said that about any modeler I've owned. Sure, there are things I want to experiment with but I've put all those ideas ins IdeaScale. I'm pretty happy with the cab sims and don't feel the need to go looking for issues.
-
I wonder if this is a high gain thing. I hardly ever use high gain and have never had any issues with the Helix's cab sims. I don't know what's different between them and IRs but I do know that IRs are static and speakers are absolutely not. If I'm going spend money on anything to improve the speaker emulation, it'll be on something dynamic. Something that takes into account the myriad of things happening to the speaker and its interaction with the cab. To me, that is when cab sims will really make a difference. It might be a while though so for now, I'm not going to waste any time futzing with IRs.
-
Man, you guys are making me feel glad that the only IRs I use are for my acoustic sounds.
-
Sneaky. I like it!!!

I'm saying goodbye to my Fender Princeton and to tube amps in general. I can get pretty darned close to the Princeton's chime with my THR100HD and it does things no tube amp can.

I was really speaking to his duties as a sound man, not the financial aspect or who his bosses are. But indeed, no tip from me either if I had to play the gig.
