  1. Here is probably the best explanation I've come across for bias, bias excursion, and sag. The info is specific for the HD but is useful nonetheless: http://blog.line6.com/2013/pod-hd-amplifier-extras—using-the-sag-bias-and-bias-excursion-settings/ As for ripple, not completely sure, but it's linked, or related, to the hum parameter. I usually just leave these alone, because I really don't hear a difference either way for the amps I tend to use.
  2. Some of those functional MRI studies are fascinating! Haha. Michio Kaku is great but can be a little over-exaggerated, or science-fictiony when describing some things. Some believe that a person's mind is not only the product of the brains connections, but also of the patterns the connections make when working, which is an emergent property. Like a flock of birds flying in formation is an emergent property. So even if you were able to make an atom by atom replica of someone's brain, something would be missing. How do you replicate the emergent property? Where does that come from? And how does the weird behavior of things small - atoms and particles - play into it? Like being in two places at once, or instantaneous communication between particles, regardless of distance? If you're into reading books, particularly fiction with some real - i.e. not made up - cutting edge science or abstract concepts, there's a great one by Greg Egan, Permutation City, that's about the best I've read about consciousness and defeating death by replicating the mind digitally.
  3. Wasn't aware you could put clickable links in there. Thanks, good to know, even though I'm not much of a fan of Custom Tone.
  4. The universe can certainly be cruel. Really sorry to hear what you went through and are going through. I've had my share of spinal related pain, so I have a small clue about the pain involved, to a point of not being able to get up unassisted from a laying down position, but nothing like what you describe. Still I empathize. It's also very inspiring to me to read about the attitude you take. BAD THINGS, FUC YOU AND ROT IN A LONELY CORNER!!!, but said and practiced in a happy phrasing. Love it!
  5. If you use an EQ, the best one for a boost is the studio EQ. It's the most transparent.
  6. Master volume, which can affect your tone, would be related to the power amp and Channel volume, just a volume and doesn't affect tone, is the output going to the speaker sim.
  7. When I first got my Helix, I tried hooking the spdif out from an HD500X (and an HD500) to Helix's spdif in. It was unusable because of a terrible hissing noise. If I unplugged the guitar cable from Helix partway, a radio signal was being picked up. Don't know if it was FM, but I never really investigated further as to the cause and basically just abandoned this connection idea. The cable had to be removed slightly though, otherwise I could not hear the radio signal. I instead just hooked it in through one of Helix's effect loops, which works fine. No noise and no radio station being picked up. I've never had any ground loop issues where I live with any of my electronic devices until I experienced the above. It's easy to blame things like this on ground loops, but I don't know...
  8. When sharing patches, isn't context at the top for importance? You can describe what the patch is supposed to be and list the gear used on custom-tone, but that's really about it. Any audio context is missing! Wouldn't it be something like trying to pick out your favorite IR without auditioning it?
  9. Ahh. Makes sense now. Essentially one path will be muted. But how would this be different than just controlling each amp's channel volume? The physical controller will still be the same, unless there's something vastly different about a pan fx?
  10. I don't see how this would work. A Pan FX will just pan to left or right, not from path A (stereo) to B (stereo).
  11. It looks like the issue might be that the folder structure changed in this update. Without removing the old version first, the program might be getting confused about which library files to use. It worked for me right away because I just extracted the archive to a folder and ran it from there, without installing.
  12. But since the pedal is an audio taper, using the pedal to control the mixer instead of the amps' channel volume would basically be the same thing, or have the same feel to it. I guess it's just one of those things that you have to get used to?
  13. The new updater v1.07 works fine for me on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.

    Patch Levels

My guess is any improvements will come in the form of a new product in the HD's price class. Also, any bugs remaining in the HD, including the edit software are now as is.
  15. This kind of thing is fascinating. Seen this demonstrated before in much more controlled settings and for more practical purposes, such as allowing a quadriplegic some amount of self-automation. First time I've seen this in a more mainstream application. It's getting there! But the way it's shown in this video, it appears very cumbersome and is extremely limiting in what you can do with the guitar musically. Just something fun to play around with, or as a self-feedback mechanism to help train you're brain to think a certain way.
  16. You'd have plenty of room to do that by just adjusting the output block level.
  17. I think he should have set up a booth at the last NAMM!
  18. Something doesn't seem right about that. I can't quite put more than one finger on it. The pickup must look awfully strange as well. I often find myself phrasing lead passages in my songs using only one string, but this would take things to an entirely different level.
  19. I do believe the volume control via pedal is an audio taper (logarithmic) already, as opposed to linear. But there is no option for this.
  20. Same thing happens on mine. On the hard to differentiate between on/off on the pedal scribble strip, um, get better eyes? :D Or mount one of those flat magnifier thingamagigs over the top of the scribble strip.
  21. Scott Baio and Willie Aames were great in the movie Zapped!.
  22. The spdif output does seem of a lower volume than other outputs. As far as I know, there is no direct way to adjust for this. Are you using the spdif for monitoring, or recording? I use the spdif for monitoring, and record via Helix's usb, so I don't find the lower volume much of a problem. But if you're on an apple OS, the usb could currently be a problem. Have you tried making the patches you use louder?
  23. When I watched this show - even though at the time I told myself I don't watch this show, damnit! - I always had to laugh at Tommy Bradford. And later when he was in Charles in Charge. :D
  24. No problems here either on win7. The problems, no solution, are well known on apple's OS. Apparently Line 6 has decided to stop waiting for apple to fix things and is going to come up with something themselves.
  25. In the global settings, you can independently assign USB 7 and USB 8 to various inputs, including guitar, aux, variax, variax mags, and mic. So with the proper cable - a TRS on one end (that's what your instrument takes?) that splits to two TS - you could get the stereo dry signal from your stereo instrument.
