Is there a detailed description for the new reverbs somewhere?
duncann replied to revolver1010's topic in Helix
Instead of using flowery vocabulary, one could explicitly state the mathematical algorithms used, or convert the algorithms into a technical word salad. But that would likely be more meaningless than flowery vocabulary, for most everybody. So other than listening, flowery vocabulary would be the next best thing, as imperfect as that may be. But if one were to read the flowery vocabulary first, and then listen, that vocabulary might at least make some sense. Or listen first, then read the elaborate description. It seems like trying to describe exotic reverbs is along the same lines as trying to describe an emotion, or trying to describe a song, or what a particular food might taste like. Describing things like this might give one a subtle, subjective taste of the substance, but until one tries it, it would remain just that. -
Can't say I've ever had one with staticky-in-and-out. I do get an occasional, but very rare, occurrence where the sound cuts out for no apparent reason and stays silent until I unplug the spdif cable and plug it back in. Other than that I haven't had any of the quick split second ones since updating to 2.54. About the only thing I can think of doing would be a global reset, or possibly trying the device on a different circuit entirely.

Uh oh. Did the dropouts change character in any way?
-
The weird thing though, is I remember seeing a video a while back (can't remember by who) where the Helix version of the mxr90 was compared to the real thing, and I couldn't hear a difference between the model and the real. So it may be that that's how it's supposed to be. But there is definitely something different about the legacy version. It's more prominent, and at the same time not unpleasing to the ears, unlike the Helix version.

Same observations here. I was looking for a phaser on bass. Tried the script mod phase, then the legacy one, and immediately discarded the script mod, which did indeed thin the tone to unacceptable levels. The addition of the legacy effects was probably one of the best additions since Helix was released.

Make sure it's not head first though.

I've had two sessions so far - with each one an almost certain probability of containing one dropout - and neither one did. Yay! Seems like they fixed it.
-
Good to read that it's fixed. Thanks Line 6. I guess the word rare is relative in this case, because when people experience(d - hopefully) it, it's usually every time they use Helix. That's not rare. But I would also guess that the number of people who use the digital output is rare. Maybe that's what they meant. Lol.

What do you mean by not working? It is a difficult effect to get working. Just about every parameter has to be set just right for your particular preset and guitar. So mess around with the controls. As an alternative to the autoswell, you could try the more generic, predictable, and easy to use auto-volume echo legacy effect.

I'm constantly after this sort of elusive sound, never quite catching it. My favorite amp would be the SV Beast Brt. I keep the drive around 7 and master around 5.6, but that may change depending on the input level. A parametric eq before the amp could be helpful, if you don't have or use an active eq on the bass, to help shape the tone and control the level into the amp. For cabs, a good parallel combination might be a 4x10 Rhino 47 cond 5" and 4x10 Tweed P10R 4038 Ribbon 1". The 4x10 Tweed helps add a crisp brightness and the 4038 at a close distance adds the deep lows. The Rhino and 47 cond focuses more of the midrange. Another parametric eq after the cabs can help fine tune. As always, it's about finding that perfect balance be the lows, mids, and highs.

You can't. Before you start editing, copy the preset to a new location, or if you forget to do that, you'll have to use the device.

i can recall one instance where after updating, the next bootup (automatic restart) froze. This was quite some time ago, pre-2.0 firmware. I wouldn't worry about it. Updated to 2.53 this morning without issue.
-
Haven't tried 2.53 yet, but it's still there is 2.52, so I would guess it's still there in 2.53 as well.

I was glad for the thinner sliders, but the initial version of them was too thin. It was too hard to use the mouse cursor on them. Line 6 did thicken them slightly since. The problem with the historically thickest sliders, besides taking too much screen real estate, was the text was sometimes unreadable, specifically for the delays. The white text became engulfed in the bright green. The newer, streamlined sliders don't have that problem.

ASCII art. Across multiple scribble strips.

Went fine here too. Although when I read that they pulled the update because of something in the update process, a kind of retroactive, virtual panic ensued with the gained knowledge that Helix could have been bricked. I just hope CC128 doesn't decide to act on the notion that perhaps Helix should have bricked itself. I think I'll just leave it alone for now.

I tend to use this a lot. Not as anything psychedelic but as a more subtle background texture to background parts of songs. Have you tried the particle verb? That one might actually be something more along the lines of psychedelic. Or the octo+particle combo. Some of the newly added reverbs can get a bit wild also.

Or for something official: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/effects-controllers/helix/helix-pedal-maintenance-procedure-r861

I highly doubt they would issue a recall. I'm no expert on these sorts of things for sure, but aren't product recalls usually associated with some sort of danger (doesn't have to be though) to the consumer? And assuming that the number of people affected by this issue is small only reinforces against a recall. But I have no doubt that Line 6 would orchestrate their own "recall" outside the legal system and on a case by case basis.

What if the hypothetical hardware problem is more than just one chip, if even a chip? A possible poorly designed circuit? That might be worse than just a chip. If it is hardware and can't be fixed with software, I wouldn't be surprised if they provide repair service or replacement units to people having the problem, even if there is no warranty. Line 6 seems to have a habit of going out of their way to make wrongs right.

When I flashed the firmware, I also did the global reset. The device's account registration doesn't matter with respect to a firmware flash or global reset. As far as I know, the only thing that will deauthorize the model packs is if you ran the Line 6 License Manager, with the device hooked to the computer, and intentionally deauthorize the packs.
-
If I remember, I tried reflashing the firmware (whatever version to the same version) on an HD500X to see if the model packs would remain. They did. But that was a while ago, so...

Doing a factory reset will not deauthorize the model packs.
