  1. Well when he said "other effects units", I assumed he was trying to reverse engineer Customtone patches for other units outside the Helix family.... while you might not be able to load a Stomp patch into Helix floor (currently, anyway), if he wants to reconstruct a Stomp patch block by block for Helix floor, or vice versa... those should theoretically sound the same, as its all the same platform. But trying to copy POD settings to Helix one by one, for example, would be a complete waste of time.
  2. I'd love to tell you that this approach will work, but it won't...99% of the time, downloading patches for the unit you actually own is an exercise in futility given the Gospel-length list of variables from one rig to another. And trying to duplicate settings from an entirely different unit, with different modeling algorithms, is an even bigger waste of time...it guarantees absolutely nothing in terms of tonal continuity. It's a non-starter.

  4. Thank you...few things are genuinely impossible if you actually bother to figure out how to do it properly. Would it be just as pretty? Probably not, but unless you deliberately half-a$$ it like a drunken 8 year old playing with dad's tools, it wouldn't be a "piece of crap" either, as previously indicated, lol. When somebody makes one for fifty bucks or less, I'll reconsider.
  5. Put it in Idea Scale... in here it'll never get seen by the powers that be. Besides, rumor has it they're working overtime on the heated pick dispenser first. ;)
  6. That's all true, but it's not what he was asking. He doesn't want to connect a different real 4x10 cabinet to the amp... he wants to disconnect the speakers entirely, use the preamp section of the amp for his core tone, then add a cab sim and monitor through headphones so he's not waking the whole neighborhood at 3 am. That scenario would leave no load on the amp's power section... the end result would be a smoldering 4x10 combo and a visit from the fire department.
  7. I feel like I've already seen this movie... Let's go around one more time though, just in case.
  8. Nope. And don't hold your breath... they're never gonna tool-up the factory for the tiny percentage of lefty versions they'd end up selling.
  9. I'm not finding fault with the concept, or the desire to protect one's gear...only the price. Which imho, is ridiculous. It's a piece of plastic with a bunch of holes in it. For the same money, you could buy a sheet of plexiglass at Home Depot big enough to make 3 or 4 of these things... sell the extras on Ebay for $50 a pop, and you'll still make money.
  10. 50 cents worth of molded plastic for $100? I'll pass...
  11. So I should stop putting those space-saver spare tires I got at Walmart on my Ferrari, then? I couldn't figure out why they keep melting...;)
  12. Well, given that pitch shifting is that device's one and only function, it would be mind-numbingly useless if it didn't... they'd have to start calling it the Digitech Nothing. ;)
  13. I use Elixir Nanowebs (11's) on everything. Perhaps the coated strings make the "zing" that some dislike less apparent? Or maybe it's the heavier gauge... or both? Who knows... but it's never bothered me. Either way, I'm completely ruined on regular frets now, lol. Bending feels like I've got a 5lb barbell hanging from my fingers, but the stainless are like glass.
  14. Trust me...at significant volume, you are going to find the need to use a low cut filter, even if you go with a 10" speaker. You're worrying way too much about about the low end. In a live setting, mids are your concern if you want to avoid disappearing fron the mix entirely. The extra low end that you might be tempted to dial in when playing unaccompanied at home at low volume, or during a test drive at a music store is NOT your friend in a live situation.
  15. Yeah... unless/until they find a way to address some of the tech's current limitations ("plink", the crosstalk with some of the alt tunings, etc), I don't know if I'll be rushing out to buy the next generation Variax, whenever it appears. I like my JTV for certain things... especially live on tunes that require switching between acoustic and electric tones. I was quite enamored with it initially, and played almost nothing else for quite a while when I got it. But I have some other really nice instruments and lately I've been gravitating towards those much more often. Part of it is that my JTV is my last remaining guitar without stainless frets... I've been completely spoiled by them, and find it difficult to play on anything else anymore. I bend strings a lot, and have a pretty wide vibrato. Regular frets feel like sandpaper to me now... so who knows. I might pick it up more often once these get replaced.
  16. Just get a Relay G10S, plug it in and call it a day.... trying to jury-rig the VDI port to power a device it wasn't designed to work with is gonna be a whole lot more trouble than it's worth.
  17. Lmao... This thread, in a nutshell: "If they're not Huggies baby wipes, they're crap... and I demand that you all prove me wrong!" ;)
  18. There's been no official declaration that they're not making them anymore... but given that it's a niche product, it's highly unlikely that they're in constant production. I suspect that they'll do a run here and there when there's a need... and for a platform that's nearing 10 years old, it's probably not that often. As for the colors... there were never a ton of options anyway. Black, cherry burst, tobacco burst, and the gold top with the P90's are all I can remember.
  19. You can always cut frequencies that you have in abundance... but you can't boost what ain't there in the first place. Sooner or later, you may find yourself in situation where "just enough" low end becomes "where'd the bass go?". Besides... there's only so much you can learn about a unit by playing unaccompanied at music store volume. Until you're using the thing in context, anything you pick is a gamble.
  20. There are numerous FRFR options these days, from the reasonably priced to units that will require that your kids skip college ;).... and you'll probably find a dozen or more threads on the topic for each product currently on the market, lol. Search around the forum a bit and you'll be able to read for weeks about the various options that folks are using.
  21. Here's the rub... whenever you switch from one kind of monitoring to another, your tone is gonna be different. Maybe a little, maybe a lot, depending on the circumstances... but this is why you're having issues with your in- ears vs. the PA. Much of this can be attributed to volume. The perception of loudness of different frequencies varies substantially with volume... it's just how our brains work. There's nothing to be done about it. Dialing in tones at comfortable living room levels on anything... headphones, studio monitors, whatever... will not sound the same when you pump it through different speakers, and at a greatly increased stage volume. So the bottom line is, it doesn't much matter what studio monitors you pick... there are plenty to choose from, and with a little tinkering you'd be able to get satisfying results from almost anything you choose, (assuming it's not bargain basement crap from some company nobody's every heard of). But small near-field monitors are very different from a PA that's designed to throw sound around a huge room at artillery range volumes. Setting up your patches needs to be done on the speakers you intend to use live (or ones as similar as possible), and as close to stage volume as you can get. Most of the time you'll end up with separate sets of patches for different scenarios. The ones I use live are EQ'd quite differently than those I use for my home studio monitors. I'd love to just set everything up once, and just have it just "work" for every possible situation.... unfortunately, it ain't that simple.
  22. If I live to be 1000, I'll never understand why this is a "problem"...Up arrow, numbers go up. Down arrow, numbers go down. Why is this hard to figure out? It's not exactly what you'd call a stretch...from all the discussion, you'd think we were being asked to reattach severed limbs.
  23. The single coil to humbucker clip and its converse aren't terrible, but the acoustic sim leaves just about everything to be desired.... not convincing at all, imho.
