  1. I'm not certain, but I don't think you have to pull the neck. I believe that it has the adjustment screw on the side of the neck, near the heel... similar to Warmoth's "modern construction" necks: http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/Strat_WarmothPro.aspx If not, I wouldn't buy it either... honestly I wouldn't pay the exorbitant price they demand anyway, but I digress... Repeatedly unbolting the neck is not only an insufferable pain in the a$$, but sooner or later you'll strip the threads in one or more of those holes, and have to dowel and re-drill. Been there, done that with "vintage"- style necks. It's a stupid design.
  2. Not really...there's been no official word that any of the JTV's are out of production. The Standard was meant to enter into the sub-$1K guitar category, not as a "replacement" for the JTV's, as such. The tech is the same, they just stuffed it into a cheaper guitar. But as always, it's anybody's guess what/ when they'll do anything in particular... sooner or later the next generation of Variax will show up, anywhere between tomorrow morning and Doomsday. It's all a glorious mystery. ;)
  3. I always wait for a thunderstorm to start mine...I like living on the edge. ;)
  4. Lol... takes me back to my music retail days 20+ years ago. It's was a little Mom & Pop place, and we were still hand-writing receipts back then... we'd hand out "wife receipts", upon request. It's amazing how many $1800 Les Pauls walked out the door for "$600"...;)
  5. lol... and here I sat, racking my brain, trying to figure out how you managed to poke everything with a multimeter through the pick guard. I was starting to get a headache. ;)
  6. We can all reckon till we're blue in the face, but there's no insight to be had. L6 guards the content of firmware updates bettet than a bio-weapons stockpile. You can request features in Idea Scale, and your wish might be granted eventually... but if/when will forever remain a mystery.
  7. Well... content/ new features and functions notwithstanding, what you've got in store is 5-8 minutes of waiting, depending on your computer's horsepower and the speed of your internet connection. That's about as exciting as a firmware update gets...;)
  8. And they'll probably keep selling them even longer than that...hell, the 500X is still on the shelves, and that hasn't had an update in years. Once they've stopped spending money on development, every unit they sell is gravy. Why quit if there's still demand?
  9. If I may venture upon a larger theme for a moment...as ridiculous as it is, this is the world we live in now. There is an (increasingly vocal) contingent of folks who believe that nearly everything is a birthright... and they act accordingly. And in the relentless pursuit of votes, our fearless leaders promise them mountains of free $hit. Comical expectations for everything under the sun is the inevitable result. One needn't look any farther than the confines of this forum for repeated examples of exactly this behavior...the relentless griping about content/ quality/ frequency of firmware updates. There are those who think that because they spent money on "Unit X" 3 years ago, that they're entitled to a lifetime of product evolution... it's bizarre.
  10. Best you can do (assuming that you're working in HX Edit, not sure if the following is possible on the unit itself) is make your changes to one amp block, then right-click on the block itself, and copy/paste to the other. There's no way to have changes to one block automatically propagate to another... at least none that I'm aware of.
  11. Yet neither Amtrak nor the post office can turn a profit... life is weird. ;)
  12. Oh joy. Another day, another "when's the new Helix coming?" thread... Same answer as always... the only ones who know ain't talking.
  13. I I sympathize with your plight, and unfortunately I can't offer anything in the way of a solution...but I'm reasonably certain that you're the first one to show up on the forum saying "My HX sounds like an ambulance"...;) Seriously though, if it's making bizarre, tempo-dependent noises, then its time for a support ticket...
  14. Honestly, I have no idea if the design has changed or not... haven't owned a guitar with a Floyd in more years than I'd care to think about. However, even if it's still the same as the old days, it still takes balls to look a customer in the eye and tell them that their set-up will cost 3x as much, merely because they have to loosen each string once or twice to adjust the intonation...it's not exactly a kidney transplant. At the prices he was quoting, after 3 or 4 set-ups, he'll have spent the price of the guitar again, which is insane. And depending on the degree of seasonal changes wherever he is, it might require a set-up a couple of times a year. Would you shell out upwards of $450-$500 a year to keep one guitar in playing order? Me neither...
  15. Nonsense. It's all about the 3rd Fezter valve... the one next to the framistan coordinator.
  16. Sounds like it should be working, and I'm at a loss for what to suggest. Don't take this the wrong way, but why are you monitoring with laptop speakers? It's just about the worst option possible. $10 earbuds would sound better. If volume is the issue, and you have any kind of decent headphones, set Helix as your output device, and monitor directly from there. The results will be infinitely better.
  17. You won't like this, but this is an unanswerable question. And I'd love to tell you that there's a magic formula for dialing in patches that will somehow allow them to sound the same in a variety of listening environments, at a wide range of volumes, and on different kinds of speakers...but the truth is, it's never gonna happen. No matter what the spec sheets say, headphones and a full PA blasting away at stage volume are two very different scenarios. The biggest difference is volume, but proximity is also significant...with a PA, you're listening at a considerable distance from the source, and way off-axis, whereas your headphones are right on top of you... which at the very least tends to make the high end more prominent. In short, you're gonna end up with multiple sets of patches, depending on what you're monitoring through. I've got 3... headphones, studio monitors, and the ones I use live. Once you've done it enough, you'll start to know what tweaks you'll have to make from one to the next, so that no matter what you dial a given patch in on, adjusting it for something else won't be such a pain in the a$$.
  18. Lol... indeed. Which is what makes all of these discussions such a fabulous waste of time. Abstract, out of context debates over the definition "clean", "dirt", and "crunch"... it's all genre-dependent. One man's over saturated, compressed to oblivion "can of bees", is another's "who the hell snuck in here turned my gain all the way down?". To the country act sideman who would be genuinely surprised to learn that there are electric guitars other than Telecasters in existence, "dirt" means one thing. If you're Alice Cooper's most recent discovery, and you have difficulty distinguishing a Tele from a canoe paddle, it'll mean something else. Everybody's right, or wrong, or neither... lol. Who cares? Do your thing, gents...;)
  19. So? It's Ebay...where comical prices are frequently demanded for everything under the sun. The same place where some genius tried to auction off one of his own kidneys for $100K. Sellers are free to demand the price of a gold plated Rolls Royce, if that's what they've decided their item is "worth"..if the price is stupid enough, it'll remain on Ebay forever, or until the seller becomes less stupid.
  20. May as well debate the nature of the afterlife, folks...in fact, it would be the exact same conversation: Lots of blind guessing, highly individualized wish lists, and references to cryptic writings of questionable origin.... "The Gospel According to Digital Igloo"...;)
  21. Do what ya like, but it's gonna be a long wait...
  22. Requests need to go to Idea Scale... it won't even get noticed in here. But honestly, it's not terribly difficult to set the volume knob at noon... there's a built in landmark: The "u" in "volume" right above the knob. Works every time. Besides, any tiny variance in the physical position of the knob would result in a minimal perceptible volume difference, if any...and anyone claiming to hear a significant change from one day to the next, is full of $hit. Unless he's standing there with a dB meter, he can't possibly know how loud you were yesterday...and even with a meter, it's meaningless anyway. Perception is variable and entirely subjective, and will never be quantifiable in any meaningful way. 90 dB today might seem louder than 90dB yesterday, for any of a thousand reasons. This guy just likes to whine...if it wasn't this, he'd be b1tching about something else.
  23. Nobody "owes" you anything. You get what you pay for. If you're hanging on for a $500 full-blown Helix, it's going to be a very long and disappointing wait.
  24. Amen... let's keep going around in circles anyway though. It's ever so productive! How many bites does it take to get to the center of a nothing-burger? ;)
