You guys are the finest! So it would be fair to dub the expression pedal as automation control? Having never given it much consideration, i guess thats all it really is...correct me if mistaken.

Ive been a guitar player for 32 years, but ive always been pretty much a guitar>head> cab guy and never messed with too many fx, outside of the basic and usual front end stuff. Crybaby, Screamer ect.. When i purchased my Helix, i wasnt aware that a rack unit was in the making, or that would have been an obvious choice for me, but as it were, i figured i would just cut the weird metal foot-rest off my helix, with a carbon blade and angle grinder when i got home. After seeing some posts here, im intrigued. It seems as if the expression pedal has nearly as many creative uses as the Helix itself. The power. I was hoping we could talk about - what the expression pedal can be used to do - and if willing, maybe you could even instruct how to use the expression pedal in the fashion you are describing in your post, so to help myself and future dummies like myself, erase a bit of the confusion, and more quickly integrate the expression pedal into our enjoyment of the Helix. Thanks for any interest you may have shown here.

Sure after re-tooling a bit and exporting set list, problem solved. Edited here because of an oversight on my part.

Editor. It allows you to skip steps otherwise not possible on the hardware.

Thats great man. Hopefully you can agree then, that the switch over to the fx return set-up was something beneficial to you. Theres no guarantee that FRFR is going to be a better sound to your ear....so no, if youre happy, i wouldnt be in a rush either. Though sometimes you never know what youre missing until youve tried it :) Ignorance is bliss. :P

There is no difference or advantage to using the Helix modeler as opposed to a DAW modeler, speaking sonics ....other than the Helix exclusively using line 6 software. For somebody to say a kemper or helix is way better just doesnt make sense...unless of course the Kemper or axe fx or helix has better sounding software...in which case it would sound just as good as a computer program. IMO there is no other modeler than TH3 right now. At the latest price ive seen $229 (?) i guess you can make many comparisons, but i got the software early and got it for $162, and at that price it really has no competition. You get soooo many stomps, fx, amps and cabs, acoustic sim, ir loader, tuner, looper, that its hard to need anything else. The sounds are the best ive heard. VERY low latency and VERY low CPU use. Of course nothing is perfect and some find the GUI inTH3 to be a drag (i dont really) but even at $229, it may be worth your time to demo it. Good luck!

Right you would need to save it as a new IR (custom IR) Redwirez has mix IR as im sure you are aware of. I think you just need to find the right IRs. My best helix sounds are coming from a combination of a Helix cab and an IR. Sometimes a single 1024 IR is all it takes though.....and to add, condenser mics are a bit more true than dynamic mics. With the right monitoring and knowing what to listen for you can tell when its an IR using a dynamic mic. A condenser is near impossible to tell. Semi knowing you, for $125, i think you should just spring for the entire redwirez library. Youll get mixIR and a lot of stuff you may not be aware that you like.

Where are you with the Line 6 amp you just dusted off ?(i forget the model) Still digging it? I found 2 in my area for sale but they were $275
-
I would just use preamp models when going into your fx return and allow your amp to power it and your speaker to sing its tune. Though if you are front ending it, as you are in your case, the distortion fx (stomps) could liven things up...or even some fx could be cool there too, altho not an optimal spot for a verb or delay...but let your ear be the judge. Use amp and cab models when going into your DAW or a flat frequency response speaker. Like a studio monitor. That is pretty descent.

VERY much appreciated. Ive seen some of your other posts and you are a beaut!! Invaluable here. Thanks for your presence on this forum and thanks for taking a minute here with me.

Nahh man.. Go into your fx return. of course its all up to you about the sound, but going into the front of your amp is hitting the amps preamp and ideally you would like to bypass it and just hit the amp portion.. Fx return will allow for this giving you better tone and more options. You can simultaneously come out of one of the helix outs and into the front end of your amp allowing you to choose that tone when you want as well. Youll just have to program the helix to turn off or on the appropriate ins/outs.

Was hoping to get somewhere with this. Anyone able to step in here? Should i be exporting a setlist or a bundle? Whats the difference between the two?
-
I actually just upgraded the editor just be fore posting. I didn't realize i was a version or two behind on the firmware until after i installed the editor. I dont want to update any firmware until ive backed up my presets. I did however roll the editor application back to 1.10, to match my firmware, and that did not work. Yep. I gave that a go, and had no luck. I'll have to try again later when i have more time. Thanks for your responses guys!

Getting this and then the export gets stuck on 4%. When i try to quit the export, it freezes and crashes. Thanks for any thoughts.
-
No no, i like what you are doing because it brings the distortion more into focus. I would say find the happy medium of gain to where the distortion is the most audible.
-
On top of all that, anytime you add any hi end from the amp controls, on a distorted sound, it just highlights the shrill high end. The distortion that the OP reports on the stone age 185 preset, is also there on the distorted channels, possibly causing what everyone is reporting as harsh high end.
-
What about the amp settings? are you leaving them at default? They way they are when the block is loaded.
-
So you didnt turn any gain down or anything? because the default setting is a lot more distorted than your example. Or are your pickups just THAT low of output? I get the same thing here, even worse (and no it is not natural-line6 needs to fix this) but i have to bring the amp gain down to 1.2...and even then, its still more distorted than your soundcloud link..

Overdrive/distortion tones not sounding good at all
willjrock replied to m6stringtosh's topic in Helix
You can get good sounds from the helix but it takes a lot of work. Too much....and then some of the factory sounds are pretty bad. Try some redwirez or free ownhammer IRs mixed in with helix cab IRs. Ive got 10 or 15 real good sounds but it took a lot of experimenting to get them. Line 6 needs to improve on it some, but you also need to spend more time with it and you'll be liking it a lot more in a few months. -
People shouldnt have to work so hard to get great tone in the modeling world. Altho it DOES still take some effort, ive never had to hi pass or EQ any other sim, cab, or amp for that matter to get descent sound. There are nasty distortions in the Helix that you must go out of your way to filter out a lot of times, hence all the complaints. Line 6 still has plenty of work to do on its modeling in the helix.
-
I appreciate the feedback, but you may be mistaken. Thats not really even possible unless you have something else going on in your chain. Helix is going to sound the same whether the volume knob is on 1 or 10.
-
To me, that distortion sounds almost as if an amp with no speaker block is running in the background, in parallel...like some of the raw amp sound is somehow bypassing the cab block. Im not saying thats what is happening, im just saying thats what the "fizz" reminds me of.
-
Here something....Try it without any blocks. The distortion is not there. Then add a block with a clean amp and it IS there, even when the overall output is lower.
-
It seems rather odd to me that Helix cabs only sound "very good" thru FRFR speakers yet redwirez sound very good thru anything capable of playback. I dont know.....I havent heard an inspiring tone yet, that was dialed with a Helix cab.

Make sure you buddy up to him since you have no real argument of your own...or we could always go back to arguing the definition of an investment lol.
