  1. Well, DI already let the cat out of the bag about this one over on another thread, but one thing that's being added in the next update is the ability to set whether the expression pedal is set to EXP1 or EXP2 per snapshot. So with this, you can have the pedal be set to whatever you want on a snapshot per snapshot basis, so you should be able to do what you want. The only caveat with this is that you'll need to have the EXP Position setting in the Global Settings menu set to Global or Per Preset (not Per Snapshot). So jut hold out until the next update, and you should be good to go.
  2. Man, the band was smokin' tonight! The funny, or perhaps sad, thing is that I imagine these MI brands don't mean much at all to Samsung. I'm sure Samsung is more interested in the consumer audio side of Harman's business - probably looking for the headphone and speaker side of things more than anything. The MI part of the portfolio is probably a tiny slice of the overall pie.
  3. Funny you mention that, as Samsung just bought Harman, which owns a few MI brands - AKG, Lexicon, JBL and Digitech to name a few... https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-electronics-to-acquire-harman-accelerating-growth-in-automotive-and-connected-technologies
  4. Helix does support MIDI over USB, but if you wanted to use some sort of USB controller with it, you'd have to have some sort of USB host device between the Helix and the controller - something like this: https://www.thomann.de/gb/kenton_midi_usb_host.htm Or this: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDIExpand
  5. Yeah, the One Spot would work. I use a One Spot with my G75.
  6. Nah... He's got a long way to go before that. Honestly, I don't have problems with anyone expressing their opinion here. I think it's great that Line 6 lets these forums be as open as they are. I'd just remind everyone to please respond respectfully, even if they don't agree with something.
  7. 2.10 will be released by next week at the latest... In a sense, yes, Yamaha is essentially acting like a holdings company. The fact that they have their own line of musical instruments and, albeit limited, line of modeling products kind of shows that. They didn't really purchase Line 6 with the intention of integrating them into their own Yamaha-branded products, at as far as can tell and from what everyone has told me. Boy, you're a real glass half-full kind of guy, aren't ya... :) I mean, really, if you're that pessimistic about Line 6 and their intentions, you may be better off selling the Helix. Life is, like you said, short, and it's too short to play stuff you don't love. Personally, I love the Helix like it is right now, and would be happy with it even if it weren't ever to receive another update. But that actually isn't the case. Like I said, there's plenty of good stuff coming. 2017 will be fun...
  8. There will be a new update, 2.10, coming any day now... So there's that... As far as the frequency of the updates, that is what it is. They have been steadily coming, and they will continue. There are some big plans in the future. As far as Yamaha and Line 6, Yamaha really doesn't get involved with the day to day operations of Line 6, or really much of anything, for that matter. DI has said that Yamaha let them borrow one of their engineers for some of the final parts of Helix' development, but it's not like Yamaha is telling Line 6 how to run the business. Yes, they do own them, but Yamaha has been pretty much hands-off with it subsidiaries in the past, and I don't see any indication that's changing, really. Rest assured there is a lot going on behind the scenes. I know some of it, but of course am bound by an NDA to disclose what I do know. I saw this picture the other day, and I think it applies here. What the public sees as the release is just the tip of the iceberg... There's a lot of hard work being done behind the scenes, and it will be evident as to why in the future.
  9. Well, the Updater is bundled in the same installation package as the editor, and the editor most certainly is there. So I'm not sure why your not seeing it. But as far as backing up, if you're starting off from scratch, there's no need to back up anything before running the Updater and installing the latest firmware. I would post a link to the actual download, but I'm posting from my phone right now, so I can't really get to it very easily right now.
  10. The editor is just called "Helix". Just select from the middle pulldown menu under the Software link above.
  11. Make sure you have the level parameter assigned to a snapshot controller. On the Helix itself, push and turn the knob under the parameter, and brackets will appear. In the editor, you have to go to the Controller Assign tab and select "snapshot controller" from the pulldown menu. The big thing to remember is that you need to see those brackets.
  12. I think the answer is basically what they've told us - the reverbs in the Helix were ported over from the HD, and all of the HD reverbs are stereo. I don't think making mono versions of the reverbs is as easy as simply deleting one side. I think it would essentially mean writing new mono algorithms for each model and making it sure still sounds the way it should. They probably just didn't think it was worth the investment of time and resources to do it.
  13. Well, you would be able to do some basic functions. You could select presets on the Helix, and you could actually program the footswitches within the HD500 to control the virtual Helix footswitches. I think tap tempo would work as well. You could probably set up the expression pedal to control the Helix EXP1/2 as well. It would be kind of big pain, though.
  14. The Vintage Delay is pretty close to the Lo-Res delay. I can't say I've done a head-to-head comparison, but conceptually, they're kind of the same thing.
  15. Yeah, actually, I think even if the Helix didn't offer amp/cab modeling, it would be a good bargain as a multi-fx processor alone. I love using it with real amps for effects only. It works great. I mean if you think about what you get - the 4 loops, the scribble strips, snapshots, MIDI control, and then all the effects. You couldn't really build a pedalboard with all those features for less than $1500.
  16. I would just power down and do the reset procedure. It sounds like the update went through OK. Doing the reset procedure will clear out any problematic presets and give you the updated factory presets.
  17. Nope... The Helix's USB port is a USB-B port - communication with a USB host device only.
  18. It doesn't matter how well something is designed or what the overall build quality is, there will always be some bad components that find their way into the production process. This is why companies offer warranties. Based on the the number of units sold, and the relatively few complaints I see about failures, I think the actual chance of getting a unit with these issues is very low. I know that doesn't really offer any comfort to people who have to deal with it, necessarily, but such is life. The Helix footswitches aren't the same as the HD500X, even though they do look the same cosmetically. They were redesigned.
  19. I wouldn't doubt that people use the term that way... It's just that's not technically correct (the best kind of correct :) ). One oft the most common uses of a sidechained effect would be a compressor that's using the kick drum track as an input source to apply compression to bass track. It creates a slight ducking effect so the level of the bass track drops a little on every kick. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression#Side-chaining
  20. Well, first, not to be that guy, but what you're describing isn't sidechaining - it's just running the effects in a parallel effects. Sidechaining is using the input from one source to control the effect (typically compression) that's applied to another source. But, anyway, if you're saying you have both the delay and reverb block in the same parallel path and have the mix parameter on both set to 100, the reason they sound different is because you have no dry signal going into the second block (I'm not sure if you have the delay or reverb first). So let's say you have delay first... You would have the repeats with no dry signal coming out of the delay block going into the reverb block, and the reverb is only being applied to the repeats. Whereas if you had the delay and reverb blocks simply after the amp/cab block(s) with the mix set to 50, the dry signal persist through the delay block and goes into the reverb block.
  21. Well, the Helix returns are switchable between instrument and line level. At line level, they're closer to +4dBu. Instrument level is actually lower than -10dBv - it's more like -22dBv iirc. Anyway, I'd just experiment with both. I think I'd be inclined to try instrument level on the Helix and -10dBv on the amp first, just because the signal running through the Helix internally is instrument level and every time you boost it, you add a little more noise. It's usually best to just have single boost at the end of the signal, f possible.
  22. I don't have any problem with people selling patches, in general - especially the people mentioned in this post. They actually have been active here and other places online in interacting with people quite a lot. Personally, I haven't ever paid for patches, just because I've never really felt the need, but I understand why people do it. I've also never really used any patches from CustomTone. I've put a few up at the request of other, but I generally think that it works out best for me to set up my tones from scratch myself. I guess from my perspective the whole patch sharing thing is a relatively small part of what makes this a community. I think the fact that people can come here and have questions answered or leave their two cents on what features they'd like to see is much more important.
