Unable to install workbench on mac
soundog replied to philschon's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Line 6 customers shouldn't have to resort to keeping an old computer or performing Java workarounds just to use their trusty old Variax guitars with Workbench. There are a few things we can do to pressure Line 6 to update Workbench so it works with recent computers and operating systems: 1) open a support ticket here https://line6.com/support/tickets/add.html and the more the merrier. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. 2) be vocal on these and other forums 3) vote for support in Line 6 Ideascale right here. You'll need to register for Ideascale if you haven't already. (In my opinion, the lack of legacy Variax support shouldn't require an "idea" for submission. But sometimes you gotta approach a problem from all angles.) Makes sense -

Yes, running latest versions of all, except High Sierra (not Mojave). I can enter the plug-in window with or without IC. I can toggle IC on and off when running it. No problems. I have no idea why some folks have problems and others do not. I wish I knew. Are there any helpful tips in this message?
-
Are you running a demo or authorized copy? For me (and I'm also using Logic Pro) after I authorized the software, it does not matter if I have wi-fi (IC) on or off. Native runs with no problems.

Thanks, cruision2 ... that's what I figured. Sounds just dandy to me.

.... in the "Promote Your Patchs" subform, he has a thread there and checks it and replies. I know there are Floyd patches in his Big Pack, maybe some in others. I don't use the vibrato bar and sometimes use heavier strings for slide work on my Variax Standard. So I hardtailed the mechanism with a wood block last weekend. Everything sounds good to me after the operation, but am wondering if there are any piezo pickup interactions I should be aware of that might impact tone.

You can't go wrong with any of these three guys' presets. They put a lot of time and thought into them.

So did Line 6 pretty much "invent" amp modeling with the POD? Were they the first to market (and so others have copied the concept, while all continue to evolve it)?

That's why I gave up trying to form The Guitar Army band last year. Too many fist fights and broken chairs.

Therein lies the rub. In a live setting, there are so many variables (PA, EQ, interaction between instruments in the mix, room acoustics, beer served, etc) using another's presets can present a challenge. I use some in a studio setting, which is much more controlled. In that case, some of the third-party presets have been a huge timesaver, as well as inspirational for song writing.

Syncing Helix Floor with Helix Native in FL Studio
soundog replied to BobbyHurman's topic in Helix Native
IdeaScale for Helix is the place these sorts of ideas get propagated, and considered by Line 6. There may already be the same suggestion for Helix Native, in which case you can "vote it up." -
1976fenderhead .... if its any help, I've gotten my best bass tracks by 1) recording straight into the DAW through an audio interface, and 2)I using Kush Audio's REDDI bass preamp plug-in (best plug-in for bass I've found; adds a bit of heft and warmth). Then EQ and compress the bass with favorite plug-ins as needed. If I use Helix (Native) at all, I duplicate the raw bass audio track, add Helix amp and cabinet, and mix it in parallel with the DI track as needed. If you want more obvious bass effects, of course you could go straight through Helix. As far as bass and Helix, there are some other thread for that and different folks have different fave amps and cabs. I personally like the old school Tuck n Go Ampeg combo.

Syncing Helix Floor with Helix Native in FL Studio
soundog replied to BobbyHurman's topic in Helix Native
I doubt there is any way to run HX Edit within a DAW .... its a standalone application. HX Edit is best used to edit presets for the hardware units. Helix Native duplicates most (if not all) of the editing functionality within the DAW plug-in. As far as MIDI control goes for Native, you're pretty much limited to the confines of what is covered in the Native manual, as well as the functionality of your DAW. All that said, Native shines as an amp/effects modeling plug-in, but may fall a bit short if you want to use it as a virtual guitar amp for real-time live performance use. -

I don't think Guitar Rig has a nearly identical (and much more expensive) hardware product that they are also selling, right? ;-) -
Nice presets, @arislaf. Also, I've been enjoying your Variax Realistic Bundle a bunch! Thx for all the effort that went into making them.

Oh boy, even just phantom powered XLR to the stereo Variax input jack would be great. I hate messing around with all of these darned Variax A/B power supplies and batteries and stuff. What a pain. For now, I use the A/B power XLR out to my Apollo audio interface and its acceptably quiet. Also am using this Variax bundle, which is a joy. And just finished hard tailing my Standard, which works great for me because I often swap out heavy strings for doing slide work via Variax alternate tunings.... While I'm on the subject, what a pain to use Workbench HD to change a few settings in the studio: Variax --> ethernet cable --> USB dongle ---> computer AND wall wart --> Line 6 A/B supply --> XLR out --> audio interface --> computer --> monitors AND Variax stereo 1/4" jack --> stereo cable --> Line 6 A/B supply AND Workbench HD all up to date and working. And don't forget that Line 6 Monkey software if needed.

You're encountering one of the reasons a lot of hit records and recording engineers use a DI to record bass instead of mic'ing a cabinet. The acoustics of a cabinet (and IR) can smear/diffuse the sound a bit. Make it sound boxy, muddy, less punchy, however you want to describe it. I don't play bass live, but do record it in the studio, sometimes using Helix Native. If I use an IR at all I dial it way back until it sounds right. Most of the time, though, I prefer the sound without an IR or cab. FYI, I own some of the 3Sigma bass IRs (fave is the Ampeg), and like them better than the stock cabinets, but they still affect the sound in the same way.

I used an Aura 16 with my acoustic for winery/coffee house gigs, and really liked the sound. Now I use an HX Effects with 3Sigma acoustic guitar IRs, and am pretty happy with the sound, but I think I liked the Aura a bit better. I tried create some IRs from the Aura before I sold it, but for some reason they didn't sound quite as good as the original to my ears, maybe I wasn't doing something right? If anybody out there is able to create a good WAV-file IR from the Aura Gallery, I'd be forever dented. The favorite one I used and need was: Acoustic Guitar (6 String); Taylor 710; Dreadnought; Cedar/Rosewood; Neumann M147
