  1. Actually, I think Line 6 has given us enough to model what we need in the POD and recreate the experience (pretty close) with the DTs... However, for me it takes two DTs to get close enough that I am not bothered for what I need...A DT112 combo sitting on top of a closed back 212 powered by a DT25...Sure, it isn't exactly the same thing as using 412, but it's close enough....I can do convincing closed back and open back tones with more preamp models in the HD POD than I will ever need....without a truck... 2. Count me in sir...Would love to do that to my MK2 112...Need to do the rear bias points and pots mod anyway on that one....It's overdue...If you need my contact info again, just PM me here...
  3. I took a quick glance at the Scarlett 2i4....That's a 2 in, 4 out interface...Analog IO only...No digital IO...If you like focusrite, you gotta move to the 6i6 or the Saffire PRO 14 to get spdif...At least that what I saw....
  4. Yo Terry...The SV-Pre is still going strong as is the old MK1....I have a MK2...might try epoxying one in if you do a run... -spaceatl
  5. hmmmm.....I do wonder about the plate voltage rating on the Tung Sols....Those are real 5881s are I recall...Max Plate voltage is 400...You have to be very careful about 5881s...They are not all the same.......you need a tube with a Max Plate rating of 450 volts or higher as I recall... I think the issue is using Tung Sol 5881s in a 400 volt amp with a Solid-State Rectifier....Check your plate voltage...I bet it's ready 420 volts or so....That's past Max on those tubes...You can generally use Russian 5881s...With Tung Sol, I think you have to go 6L6...6L6 of anything will always work...I am using Mesa 5881s....but those are Russian version with higher Plate rating....Your tech should have noticed this...
  6. I have old EMU 1820 interface and HD Desktop works just fine with that....My interface has 8 analog inputs and I have recorded my HD Desktop using unbalanced cables and balanced cables (L and R ourputs are TRS)....My interface also has a coax spdif IO also....that works fine too for recording the POD...You can take a dry input off the spdif in the POD at the same time you take the processed on the Analog outs if you setup the pOD that way...If you interface supports ASIO configuration, then re-amping the dry track isn't much of a problem at all...It's just configuring the pathc IO on your interface...
  7. That was why I suggested a Weber Mass...It's a real speaker motor..."Reactance" is the word I think you meant...A Weber MASS has reactance...resistors do not...
  8. Good job mentioning that. I sure hope no one tries a Variac on an DT running at 90 volts...Certainly that would not be a good idea...And safety is the primary concern... In terms of running a tube amp safely silent which is the topic on this thread...One can run ANY tube amplifier silent safely...You need only a dummy load to do so. Make sure that the rating of the dummy load is 4 times the amplifier rating...A properly rated resistive load is actually a bit safer for the amplifier's output transformer than real speakers are since speakers more often tend to fail to open circuit...If you plan to run your amplifier near max power, you must use a load that is at least double the rating...four times is better...Tube audio power amplifiers can actually exceed their rated output by 4 times in fast transients depending on the design...Running sustained at full power, they tend to nearly double...So that DT-25 could lay down as much as 50 watts with the master dimed...fast transients as high as 100 watts...So you use a 100 watt dummy load or attenuator on a DT-25 and you are actually safer than you are with the stock speaker by 10 watts... People that generally experienced a failure doing this are the ones that used one a dummy load(or attenuator) matched to their amplifier's output ratting and dimed the output, melted the load and wondered why their amp blew up...They just did not know any better...I think most of those guys are former hotplate users... ;)
  9. I thought a stock Fender used a 12at7 for PI...higher current rating...
  10. I don't know but it would seem that the 800 might have been shot a little on the hot side...And I think that model probably differs from how most people run those... My own opinion is that the DEPs they chose the middle settings to offer as much of the dynamics of the power amp as they could...and they are all different... The DEP amp parameters are really the trick to finding yourself in a FULL model...Sure, turning the master DEP can help the 800 sound better...Another way to smooth out some of the xover distortion in those class AB models and tighten it up is to increase the bias DEP and decrease the biasX...I find these settings to be subtle and a little deceiving in headphones...I generally have to check with some decent air moving as these settings are more about dynamic response than the tone...they are all very interactive... Here's a little refresher from the Advanced Guide... Page 2 of the Amp:Edit Screen (not displayed for Preamp Models) • Knob 1: Use this Master Volume to adjust the amount of power amp distortion. This parameter is highly interactive with all other power amp parameters - the lower the Master is set, the less effect the other controls will have. • Knob 2: Setting the Sag to minimum offers a “tighter†responsiveness, and turning clockwise provides more “touch†dynamics & sustain. • Knob 3: Controls how much heater hum & AC ripple interacts with your tone. At the maximum setting things get really freaky. Page 3 of the Amp:Edit Screen (not displayed for Preamp Models) • Knob 1: Changes the Bias of the power tubes. Set to minimum to achieve a very “cold†Class AB biasing. At maximum the amp is operating in Class A. • Knob 2: The Bias Excursion determines how the power amp tubes’ voicing reacts when they are pushed hard. Set low for a tighter feel. Set high for more tube compression. This parameter is highly reactive with the DRIVE & MASTER settings.
  11. This amp modeling stuff grew out of the impossibility of creating a Solid-State device that is exactly equivalent to a Vacuum Tube in terms of electrical response. Modeling is really the only cost effective way to do that....but that means going digital and back....computation... However, things like this give me some hope that one day we might have a solid-state tube that that yields the same response without the need for a computer...Might have to try some of these...One thing at least for the old gear is that a solid-state tube might introduce the notion of EXACT match pairs/quads etc... http://eshop.amtelectronics.com/6l6-12ax7-amt-electronics-solid-state-tubes.html
  12. Probably at some point...He has done just about everything you can do...I know at one time in the early days he did take a line off the head the run the FX stack...and the power for that was a SS Crown power amp as I recall...Probably several incarnations there...He intentionally mismatched the cab load on the Plexi power amp for the dry tone using a wirewound pot...basically, he added some adjustable resistance to the speaker line...It's a global tone control...impedance higher than the tap means brighter....impedance lower than the tap tends to darken some... This gets really complicated with the Variac running a lower voltage as the impedance of everything changes some with that...
  13. If you want a soaker that sounds like a speaker, then get a Weber Mass...It's a speaker motor without a cone so it's basically silent... https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/mass.htm
  14. Never a good idea for a tube amp...Running a tube amp without a load can burn up the output transformer. I would suggest you at least put a dummy load on the amp...A resistive load will keep the power amp loaded....But the tone will be different than with a cab... https://www.parts-express.com/8-ohm-100w-non-inductive-dummy-load-resistor--019-020
  15. I think the clean to light crunch is where HD is really excelling...With the XT type modeling, the only way I could ever get anything to work as to put a tube buffer in the signal path...and even then it was just starting to "feel" better...Never could use the XT stuff direct for cleans or light crunch...heavier stuff was ok...but I always ended up using putting a tube in the path...I never used POD Farm (XT bean and Flextone III XL), but my understanding is that the Farm is XT generation modeling so what you are saying seems very consistent with my feelings on the XT type modeling I have...I had to use outboard gear to get XT modeling good enough for me...tube power amp with a mic on a cab and some outboard FX since XT chains were fixed...With an HD Bean I can record direct and the cleans 10 times better IMO...The dynamics were the thing that blew me away the first time I used it in headphones...I don't need the outboard gear anymore....I can do the chain however I need...Made my life a little simpler...
  16. I like some grit too...It's not the grit so much as the dynamic range...That's a power thing...Instead of "spank"...it goes "splunk"... I guess the only analogy I can think of is Setzer...Gretch into a Bassman....Basssman can have a really nice nice pushed clean vibe...but still has the dynamic feel that is sorta like a Twin, jsut not quite a clean....grit is isn't my issue with the DT25 cleans in a louder situation...it's just that the power section compresses the transients a bit too much when pushed...
  17. I have the DT50 112 and the DT25 head cab.... The DT25 is great for practice rehearsals and playing out with it has worked for me to a degree....However, the few times I have played out with the DT25 as my only amp, I have used one of my 212 cabs instead of the stock cab...more sources... The real issue I have with the DT25 in a group situation when the amp is pushed is that the clean tones suffer a little bit...with better monitors pushing is less of an issue...But clean tones do suffer just playing next to a rock drummer with a real kit with no monitors....I have run it on 412 cab also and that really helps the cleans in louder situations...The amp is just a bit underpowered for cleans IMO, but that actually make it great for getting a cranked tone...both are great amplifiers...
  18. It depends on your tone, your cab and speakers....If you like the ice pick in the forehead V30 vibe, then perhaps 45 degrees off axis...That approach is backwards from how I roll....get a great tone on the rig that works for the situations I need...Then figure out the mic strategy... I would suggest not to get too caught up with analyzers....Too many tweak with their eyes instead of their ears....Certainly if it helps you understand what you might want to correct, go for it....You might be better off just using a reference mic and record from several positions...that might help you determine and average...
  19. I have the HD Desktop....It's my main pre amp all the time....I generally use the power amp in on just about any tube amp....I have an SV MK1, SV MK2, DT50 and DT25....Since the HD came around, that's the modeling preamp I use....I can also use it with headphones or direct to a PA (FRFR Monitors)...Best bean ever IMHO...dynamics are the big improvement in HD over the previous generation....If you have issues with dynamics in your pooter, it could be your interface....the interface (ADC) is everything when capturing a dry guitar from analog (passive guitars)...If it's a 9VDC active PUP system, then you only have 10v peak to peak at the max anyway. The dynamic range of most passive guitars can be quite a bit higher than that.... HD Desktop is pretty decent for catching the dry with the SPDIF...
  20. All you need is a fishin' hat and an old acoustic...
  21. It's the rationalization that is entertaining...It's classic rationalization... Don't take it personal...everyone is doing it...You want IRs...I want a sandwich...In tribute to Looney... It's start with a notion of informed acceptance... -"I know the POD is not going make me a sandwich." The middle lays the groundwork (rationale) that defines the problem...with modest acceptance... -"But everyday around noon, I start getting hungry....and I know I can make my own sandwich..." Finally, a solution is once again injected that conflicts with the original notion of informed acceptance... -"If the POD just had the freedom to make me a sandwich, I would no longer be hungry....besides, my sandwiches are not very good." Please do not confuse me with Line 6....I do not work for Line 6...sorry you missed it... :(
  22. Perhaps you should get it serviced... Not sure what to say about your power belief other than it's a free country...Sorry I could not help you...
  23. Now the cabs are weird, not to be trusted...dang, still no sandwich... :P "Just not possible without external gear"...and here I am thinking that the Torpedo was a pretty decent hint as to why that might be...guess not...
  24. I like how you guys rationalize this..."If the Cab Models sounded decent"....I think one guy put it as "giving us the freedom to choose"....I am still put out that POD hasn't made me a sandwich yet....All this time, and still no sandwich... :D
  25. perhaps a structured approach would help you isolate your hum issue...sounds like you have too many variables to quantify... Run the amp by itself...Nothing connected other than power and the speaker...Does it hum? if so, try to isolate the modes of the amp.... Does it hum in Class AB? Try each NFL and each mode... Does it hum in Class A? Try each NFL and each mode... Basically you have 16 configuration combinations of the power amp... If the amp is pretty quiet, then you know the the issue is probably elsewhere...now plug in your guitar to the amp and see what the noise deal really is with your guitar and the amp itself...then add you HD500....maybe you need an AVR or a decent power conditioner? have you ever measured your house power? Do you know for a fact that you have zero voltage on ground? Are there CDL bulbs or light tubes nearby? CRT monitor...computer?
