I updated my pod HD500x to the newest patch just because. Now listening to it over just the USB I think maybe updating to the lastest was a mistake. Everything sounds very dark a quit a bit fizzy. How do you go back? Monkey will reinstall the latested but I'll like to try it with one back to really see.

Picked up some of these last night. I really dig this pic. Feels like a natural extension and has nice round tone. I thought the small size would be a problem, but I had not problem with it at all.

On Axis/Off Axis just depends on the sound you want. Either is valid depends purely on the sound you want. How to find the sweet spot: 1. Turn up the amp so you get some hiss from the amp, patch in gain pedal if needed to get a bit of hiss. 2. Put you mike (staight to the grill for this test, you can do off axis later if you want) to the speaker and move it around on the speaker. 3. You find one spot on the speaker that bump up the level just a bit higher on the mic input channel. Mark that spot, that is your sweet spot. It can be different even for of exactly the same amp/speaker combos.

:) Very nice. The sharper point on pick can make big difference in speed and getting clean notes. I use Dunlop Tolex sharps for shred stuff. They are too hard and get too much of click to them for straight up rock. I might pick up some of those Jazz III's lots of people seem to like them, never tried them.

Excited about my new Variax Bass! Picture!
Palico replied to ChristianArnold's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Nice looking Bass you got there! :) -
I wonder if that is the difference then in the refresh rate. I can tune with good headstock tuner and dial the tuning in quicker and it *seems* more accurate than the POD. Maybe it's just because the headstock tuner is not bouncing around as much making it easier to dial in.

Workbench compatibility with Pod hd500x and variax 300?
Palico replied to ioscommuter's topic in POD HD
POD HD500X and the old Workbench (version which worked with non-JTV Variax) does not work. If you wish to use WorkBench with your Variax 300 you will need a POD HD500 or older POD device w/ a VDI interface. Or get the USB thing which can still be had for *meager* price fo $99 new. -
My setup basicaly a Dream rig w/ DT25 combo but using a Variax 500 instead of JTV. Last night at rehersal it seemed I had to turn my master volume kind of high. So I started looking around at some various settings as it just seemed odd to me. I found the low power switch had been engaged but it didn't light up the "Low Power" on the top of the amp. I unplugged the L6 Link and the low power lights up. So I turn off the amp. Set the switch to normal mode and reconnect the L6 Link. It *seemed* louder to me and I adjusted the amp back to about where I normally have it (about 4 to 5). Everything seemed fine. My question is does the lower power mode supposed to even matter when the L6 Link is connected?

I would generally agree, the HD and even on the X3 the tuner seemed to be a *bit* off. It is close enough for me on stage in live situation most of the time but I usually had a headstock tuner or other tuners around to make sure it was correct when I have the time to dial the tune in correctly. The gutiar itself is not a perfectly temptered instrument anyway and will always be a bit out of tune somewhere on it. There are some odd fret board with that attempt to correct that but for most of us the standard straight frets are good enough. Add to that if you intonation is not perfect or the nut hieght is not perfect or the how hard you press the strings down and how high and/or worn your frets are.

+1. If your not near a GC the live wire cables have screw off ends, so they should be easy enough to resolder. I haven't need to with any of them yet.

I got the DT25 combo with my 500X unit. I was also concerned about having enough volume because at times I have to push ith just the amp wit the 1/12. I played a show this weekend outside using just the combo amp. I was about 75% on the master and had to roll off the volume pedal I had setup for some stuff. The DT50 will give you more volume for sure, but I DT25 will do in most venues without a problem. It's much louder than I expected it to be.

I'll have to check into that one. Didn't know they made one with that many inputs.

I'm looking to doing some recording for my band. I would like to mic the drums up with one on each drum and two overheads. So I need at least 7 inputs to the DAW (Mixcraft 6). Up to this point I've just used my POD as the interface as the two inputs were enough for me, work fantastic for the guitars and vocals. But 2 ain't gonna cover it unless I mixed down the drums with external mixer which I really don't want to do; I would like to have the change to EQ each drum to get the best sound, plus the stereo field options too! Anyway, I'm looking to see if anyone has any recommendations on 7 or above input interface that will not break the $$$. I figure I'm in the 500-700 ranger already just to get that many inputs over usb and/or firewire.

You can set the play back volume on the setup screens but unfortunally never found a way to set it with a foot controller. I've tried to use it a live situation before at practice. Problem is I can't seem to click it on and off at the exact right timing so the loop doesn't jump off when the measure comes back around.

I agree the looper is just a extra throw in and would need more to be useful in peformance since. It is useful for trying out patch change thought. Just kick it in and then you get the exact same performance each time. Note: You CAN get the full 48 seconds from the looper. Click the button for 1/2 speed BEFORE you record anything. It will not be selected when you first go the the looper. You will then have the full 48 seconds. The trick is the if you hit the 1/2 speed button while play back instead of slowing down the record piece to half speed it will double the speed.

I watch a vid from big church where they had the neatest system for that. They had the amps behind the stage in full enclosed and padded isolation boxes mic'ed up. And then just had plugs on the stage for the effects floor boards. One of the cleanest stages I had seen. Plus in-ears for monitors so no wedges. Of course I'm sure they have major monetary investement in their system. I use to play in church but I'm back out peforming again. So now the volume is not big deal but in the church setting that is huge deal becuase your expected to sound good but you have keep it at a pretty low volume. Aside from the pure capability of the POD units the small foot print and volume was why I started using the PODs as well. Then I got hooked on them. Now using Variax, HD and DT25 althought I can generally crank up now.

Asidie for the HD->DT, the POD have always sounded best sent direct to PA, IMO. If you have to mic and amp on stage and volume is problem the only option is to use a isolation box to tame it. But with the POD untis that is not really needed anymore.

So if I'm gonna pre-sell tickets and get a portion of those tickets why would I not rent my own venue and make all the money myself? Don't walk away of that offer, RUN away fast! -
Extra Expression Pedal - what do you program it to do?
Palico replied to ColonelForbin's topic in POD HD
This depends on how you want the volume to act. If you put in pre amp (traditional) placment, it will act like the volume on the guitar and clean up the signal as volume is rolled down.If you put it in a post postion it will act more like master volume control and just reduce the overall volume without affecting the tone (Distorted sound) -
Delay Before Reverb? (general 'pedal' Sequence Thoughts)

Yep, I used to be the same. Then even before I moved over to the digtial world, I discovered effects looper were made for reason. -
Delay Before Reverb? (general 'pedal' Sequence Thoughts)
Palico replied to ColonelForbin's topic in POD HD
Love to put the Volume Pedal at the end of the chain. It basicly works like a master volume on the floor. I can roll down the volume on the guitar itself if I want that clean up effect. I read on post the other day for Surf type of Reverb sound to put the Reverb unit in front of the amp, so I guess it's all about what sound you are after. I've found Mod effects can work well before or after. I always liked a phaser after the distorsion as it makes the phaser toned down a bit. Before it could give you some wild swirls thought. -
If you have downloaded the HD500 Edit. Checked the controller min value. It sets that funny depending on what the value of hte effect at the time of assigment. That has caught me a dozen times. Not sure that's you issue but worth checking.

The Pod X3 had a good bit of Bass amp models on it. I the HD500x I think has two models, one being the Fender Bassman but it does have Ampeg as well. Not a lot of options, but a couple of effects that useful for Bass. Most bassist I've known were more into getting a Bass amp with a lot of headroom so they can shake the room well, hence why I dont' thinkt the L6 Bass offerings ever took off that well. I've used it from time to time on Bass to record so I don't have the mic's etc... but I really don't know even If I would use it much for bass in live situtuation.

Palico replied to EOengineer's topic in POD HD
I can certinaly understand that. The biggest problem I see with the technlogy is the option overload. I read Meeboos guide and I think largerly it involves mainly things that you have to do even on pedals (order of pedals, gain stages, etc...) But I do think it is bit easiler to dial in on pedals. Mainly becuase you only have so many options on the pedal. Turn the couple of knobs and it does what it does. You can't tune you cabs with real cab either, unless you physcially change the speakers or cab itself. That can be very freeing. I there is defently the Digital Fizz issue but that has been getting to be less of a problem over time and updates. -
That is what threw me. Thanks for the explaination guys!
