  1. Oh yea, I agree. I use Eb so that I get can use the Mags most of the time. The modelling I use now and then and like I said it's workable. Oddly enough I use the modelling in between for the retuning capability. My JTV89f is the only Floyd on the market I can use different tuning all night long and be on one guitar. My point was as someone with experience using the guitar but manually retuning it's less the optimal the more away from standard you go. So for those that play a lot in drop tunings, it likely is not the best guitar for that. Unless you plan on usingthe modelling most of the time.
  2. +1. I use Eb tuning and while workable you can tell it's not designed for it. I'll tune it up Standard sometimes and the modelling works better. Man that sucks the OP got an $$$ guitar that you can't use for your personal setup but in this case your best solution might be really to look at finding something that suits your setup taste better.
  3. Hmm being you are running mic and guitar, I would probably think studio direct would be the best option to keep the mic line the cleanest sounding. But you might try each one, just a matter of trade offs in that scenario.
  4. On Rare occasion I it seems the POD freaks out and does some odds stuff when changing a patch. Usually just switch to another patch and right back solves it. Again for me that is rare occurrence and I think that a hiccup on the POD not the DT. This one has happend to me a couple of times. What I've found is it seems to be glitch in the DT related to physical knob positions, or some sort of short or maybe not so good pot on the DT. Two things that fix it. 1. Just turn the volume on the POD down (to avoid loud squeals) and move the offending knob, you can see on the DT screen as the one that is not on the correct setting/dot where it was saved and move the knob back and forth quickly. Kind of the same thing as quick fix on dirty volume knob on guitar. Just spin the debris/dust out of it. The other thing is the keep the knobs (physical knobs not the real pod setting) on the DT set around 12 o'clock. Seems all the way up or down seems to trigger that more. While I have experienced this before it's not often. I usually set my knobs to 12 o'clock before a show and then just switch the patch and back to reset the patch afterwards.
  5. Stick with the XLR. A 1/4 cable is high impedance signal. This is fine for guitars and for short runs (under 30' feet). On a XLR cable you have low impedance balanced signal. So it's good for longer runs. Since you are using vocal and guitar on the POD you using one side of the POD chain for vocal and the other side for guitar. So you are mono on each of those already. You could use the 1/4 outs instead but there would be no reason to do that, and you would lose capability of using anything over 30 foot length without sacrificing some sound quality.
  6. In country music (well older country music and modern chicken pickers) hybird picking using the middle and ring finger is quite common. I also got to see ZZ Top play last year up close to the stage. I would say Billy played more with his fingers than the pick. He would grab the pic and then drop it or throw it out to the audience quite a lot.
  7. +1 well written! Line6 has proven it will completely replace the flagship instead to something that will cost twice as much. It's not a sustainable model. As much as I like my HD500x and DT combo the idea of going back all analog with the stuff, I've learned being the digital world is tempting. Yes other companies will update amps, pedals etc... as well. But when company [x] changes a new pedal I want, that pedal will still plug in and work with my old gear. Part of that is inherant to the fact it's analog so there is only 1 interface standard. But from an end consumers point of view, I don't care. I want what serves me best, the details of interface and limitations of technology are not my problem or concern.
  8. Ever try Hero tumb pics? They are nylon ones so they feel a bit different than most thumb pics. The edge is pretty straight but you could manually bevel it like you did to the others. http://www.elderly.com/herco-flex-52-blue-nylon-thumbpick.htm
  9. FYI. I was able to download and reflash to 1.71 with no issue. One side note 1.71 doesn't not support controlling tunings from a POD directly. Tuning knobs etc... all work properly just can't set directly on the POD. I'm in love again. This sounds more like I expect my Variax to sound, no odd quacks. I know it's up to individuals but this to me is the pinnacle. Just missing some minor stuff.
  10. Yea I'm windows 10 so used Monkey for Win 10. I might try downloading the file directly, had not tried that. I had a Variax 500 which I think was around 1.7 or 1.5 or so and it was my favorite modelling sound-wise. The JTV 89F gives me the locking Tremolo and the playability is so much better. 1.9 for me is pretty good but I've when away from using the modelling a lot because some of them just are not as good to my ears.
  11. With the JTV 89F, on Monkey it only let me go back to 1.9. It's it possible to go to 1.71 on the 89F or you do that with a different JTV?
  12. Always drives me crazy that PA power amp companies put out such huge numbers for their amps. Crown is usually pretty good about putting RMS figures instead of peak but they usually show it as bridged mono running at 2ohms (if stable) or 4ohm loads to list those numbers. Behringer (actually IMO not a bad amp) is the worst about the wattage numbers, hard to even find the RMS numbers.
  13. Willing to bet we will get a bit on the L6 Link integration on the Helix eventually. Line 6 is supposed taking a look into trying to get to play nice with each other. I suspect we will get something along the lines of using a single DT but have the topology etc... switching over the L6 connection. Long term I expect, Line6 will integrate and collaborate more on the Yamaha side. Yamaha already has some modeling amps. We already have the Yamaha Variax standard. So I expect the DT replacement will eventually come from that side of the house, IF there is one. L6 has history of tinkering with thinks like this (what happened to Bass Variax, Acoustic Variax, etc...) and then more or less turning back and focusing on FRFR later. Although due to Bogner's involvement I don't truly expect the replacement to stand up to the DT. It's truly an outstanding amp. If I end up replacing it down the road, L6 will have to really convince me the replacement is really that good, which as good as the Helix looks they have not done on the POD, or I will end up going back all analog.
  14. Here is the thing with the POD. It's not made to instantly produce sound like [insert artist x here] for you. It WILL allow you to make crappy crappy tones. That is accurate for modeling system because well the real amps/pedals/mixers/mic etc... will all allow you to make some crappy crappy tones too. Aside from the great advice and guides you already gotten on this thread, Look at what amps, pedals, mics the artist you want to emulate uses. Often this will not get you totally there as there may be post record EQ on their record that you will not know what it is. Or there amps might be modified or they use one not in the POD. But this is a good start and for any effect/amp you don't have in the POD usually you can find something in the area. There are also plenty of resource on what specific effects are typically used for. The POD is not build for Metal, Rock,Blues,Jazz, etc... it's built for all of them. So you might not really have much of need for some effects. Then again since they are there in the POD it does give you a great deal of space to experiment with inventing something too.
  15. My old Variax 500 had no quacking sound what so ever. My JTV89F does, particularly when used with alternate tuning. Part of this is likely because I use a 1/2 physical tuning (meaning actually tuning the strings down 1/2 steps not digital). When I have set to standard the quacking is less noticeable. Yes I'm on 1.9 as the HD the quack is much much worse on some models (particularly the hollow bodies) and I find most of the models sound very thin sounding. Superior features, particularly the tuning knob and build and overall way it plays. Yep love it, totally agree. Overall all my 89f is outstanding playing guitar and the only floyd that can quickly retune, although not perfect I still think it's a great guitar.
  16. Play ability the overall tone using the Magnetic pickups : JTV Tone and overall sound of the models: Older Variax.
  17. The DT25 has a great direct out on it. I would tweak the patch for the DT25 and use the DT25 direct out to the PA. Or even mic DT25 like you would any other amp. I play live with my DT25 3 or 4 times a month. My setup for smaller venues is actually just using the DT by itself. For bigger venues I will send use the direct out on the back DT. I played one for where they had a pro level pa setup and due to setup and time they just mic'ed and it sounded great that way too.
  18. As already said the POD can function as an audio interface for guitar and actually a very very basic one for mics as well, no phantom power so no condenser mics. Most audio interfaces have input for low z (guitar/bass/etc...) and mic inputs. When they are used with a guitar typically you use a VST or other type of software solution for modeling the guitar amp/pedals etc.... so the POD covers those in one box. The stand alone audio usually also handle most any type of mic so you can mic a cab or vocal etc.... So they are more a bit more extensive for recording say an entire band in tracks but for just guitar the POD works fine. I have both for different purposes. Last time I did some recording with my band, I used my Tascam inteface for vocals and micing up a drum set but used a POD X3 for Bass guitar and my POD HD500x for guitars going straight from the POD to the DAW in both cases.
  19. When creating a lead patch, I like to move it up about a 3db or so. But like Pianoguyy said that also includes fx/eq changes as well. In the end, since it's perceived volume, I just use my ear during rehearsals or sound checks to dial in the what my final lead patch will be. And I don't use a lead patch on everything. Some times just kick on some fx (overdrive,dist,compressor,etc...) without changing patch is enough.
  20. silverhead is likely correct on your problem. But to provide another possibility. Check the assigments of exp1 and exp2 and pay close attention to which one the patch is set on the board itself. There is a little led light for EXP1 or EXP2 on the board itself that will switch. One is red the other green. Also, if you doing the patch on machine make sure you write it to the patch before you try it. I've had some odd behavior with the pedals in that aspect. If you getting odd behavior then just set the pedal on the device usually fixes that.
  21. Great post guys! Really enjoyed reading this on musicians ship and showmanship! As a amateur, I never attempted to put up walls of empty Marshall, of course I don't have the stage room in the local pubs I play anyway. But they do look cool. And while as a guitarist, I really enjoy a Steve Via type of band that can really kill it on stage. I also enjoy a KISS type of show where it's a spectacle to behold. Although I don't think the "Marshall" name on the wall of empty cabs makes any difference (except to perhaps musicians that are attending), it's just the fact it's wall of "speaker" cabs. I thought about taking the Line6 logo off my DT25 before just for that reason but then I changed my mind because I don't really care too much about other musicians that down anyone just because they don't like the gear they use, so I don't care if those guys like me or not. I want to win fans, people that like my music and show, not my gear.
  22. That's why I do a down movement with the volume knob (in fact all the way down very quickly) and then back up to where the dot is. Then I adjust. Still yea you can get huge volume hit if the physical knob was up high last, but turning it quickly negates most of it.
  23. I'm not totally sure I understand the question. As for the patch to patch volume, I've found not real easy solution other than just tweak them over time. I do like you a compare back and forth a good bit to try to keep them in relative volume. As for the knob position when moving from one patch to another to make the adjustment. On the POD itself there is a small dot on the display over the last saved knob position. So I move the knob down then back up to that position indicated by the dot and adjust up/down from there.
  24. Yea I'm the odd ball, in the 30-50 age range and love my dream rig setup. The only thing I hate is others that will bash someone else's rig based on their style and choices. Because someone else's rig doesn't work for you doesn't mean it doesn't work for them. I play open jams from time to time and am playing those thought the host guitarist rig. Some of them a I hate, because they don't work for my style of playing. But when the host guitarist plays it, it sounds good. It works for them but not me. It's not a bad rig or a bad tones, just not ones that work for the style and way I play.
  25. They don't have iso cab somewhere you could put the powered speaker? I get not wanting amps with a IEM setup, but most that have that setup use amps off stage somewhere for electric guitars. You will get it, just will take some time working on it as much as you can within the time given.
