It's there for multi and guitar input, but only affects the physical guitar input, not the Variax VDI input (wish it did). It's an actual impedance adjustment on the guitar input, not a simulation. I use it for my regular guitars to mellow out the sound, but I find it depends on the guitar. Wish they had a simulation for the Variax mags.

Replacing Magnetic Pickups

Rearrange your snapshots so the 2 you want are next to each other..

Did a little test with the Helix snapshot Variax settings - the parameters are selectable per snapshot. I selected the "Preset Variax Lock Control", pushed and turned so the brackets show up indicating Snapshot control of the parameter, then on one snapshot set it to "Pickup Select", and "Unlocked" on all other snapshots. With that and your special custom Variax model chosen on the "Preset Variax Model" parameter also under snapshot control, choose your custom model for that snapshot - changing the pickup selector won't force a model change for that snapshot, but you will be changing the mag pickup positions. When you change to another snapshot, change the model selection on that parameter. If you have it set to "Don't Force", it'll stay on the last chosen model which would be your custom model, and you don't want that. Also make sure the "Preset Variax Lock Control" is set to "Unlocked" for the other snapshots. With another regular model chosen on the other snapshots, when you use the pickup selector, it will choose other models in that group, like the T-Model Group, Spank Group, Lester Group, no matter what you Model Knob is physically set to.... On your custom Variax model, the body type and pickup type shouldn't matter if you pull all the preset's string volumes down all the way, and maybe the pickup volumes as well, and have your Mag mix all the way up. This is a very interesting possibility to me, as I have both the JTV 59 & 69, and they have very different overall volume differences. The 59's Humbuckers are quite a bit louder than my 69's Single Coils, to the point of I have 2 sets of the same presets, one for the 59 and one for the 69. If I could do what you're looking to do with a custom "Mags Only Model", you can also adjust the preset master volume, I might be able to even out the volume differences for both guitars' mags, and have just one set of Helix presets for both the 59 & 69.... I don't like using the USB interface for Workbench, as you only can monitor the guitar through the 1/4" JTV jack. I could fire up my HD500 or 500X and do it via the VDI, but will wait until the pending Helix 2.20 firmware update that will FINALLY make HD Workbench function via the Helix VDI. I have found that volume and tonality difference exist between the JTV VDI and regular 1/4" outputs. Many have said it doesn't, but I've experienced it on both of my JTV's. Dave

Interesting idea! It should work if you set the model pickups to the lowest possible, and reduce the string levels to the lowest as well if only the pickup level doesn't do it alone. The only hitch would be the pickup switch changes the model selection, so you can defeat that with the helix Variax control parameter. I do that with my acoustic electric preset so when I change my electric pickups with the selector it doesn't mess with the model selection....

I do this with the 2 paths. One is set with the DVI set to Variax model, the other is set to Variax mags. I set the model to the acoustic with my favorite acoustic lineup of eq, compression, reverb, etc for the model (no amp model), the other for the electric. I set a gain block at the beginning of both paths that toggle the volumes on and off for the paths depending on the snapshots. I've set them for electric- acoustic, electric- banjo, etc. Works great.

Long awaited by us JTV owners. We had the ability on the prior pedals (XTLive, X3Live, HD500, but had to wait on the HD500X as well.) It makes editing the JTV sounds MUCH more convenient.

I'm also a left hander playing right handed, but there are degrees of left handedness. I do some things left, but most others right handed. Playing right handed was not really a conscious choice I remember making, it's just how I learned. Same with throwing a ball, etc. Things I do left are basically writing and eating. I know people who are left handed in everything they do, so for them, the guitar would only feel natural lefty. However most guitar players I know to be even more lefty than me, play right handed... Just an observation on my part. I've only personally known one person that plays guitar lefty. It would be good if a Variax was made for those folks as well, but yes, I see the market aspects as well. If L6 wants to break it out of the niche, they should revisit that variation....

Just don't use a Clapper, could be embarrassing at a gig....

I've had mine since late October 2015, from Sweetwater. I edit pretty much only on the unit itself (helix floor). So far no issues with the rotary joystick (knock wood). Just wanted to add a data point. Dave

Checked Sweetwater, and it's still listed there, not in stock, but had an expected date... Dave

Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable
davidb7170 replied to joebar23's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Don't think you're getting response because (probably) no one has done what your asking about. It may be dated tech for what it's intended for - digital networking, but the use of the Cat 5/5e cable and connection for the VDI on the Variax - HD500X or Helix is not a network application, it is just using the same multi conductor cable for it's 4 pairs for 2 digital signals (mag only & combo of Variax mag/model), power, and switching functions. The digital signals are not packet type LAN network signals, but rather continuous digital audio streams probably similar to SPDIF. Also the same reason that network switches or routers will not work between the Variax and the HD500X or Helix... The advances in Cat 5 to 6 to 7, etc, usually are to better transmit LAN traffic better and faster as LAN speeds increase. My first home network was 10 BaseT (10Mb/sec), the next step was 100 BaseT (100Mb/sec), I now run a Gigabit system 1000 BaseT (1000 Mb/sec), just in my home. The next step up will the Terabit systems, that require even higher bandwidth speeds. As those frequencies increase, so does crosstalk between close signal conductors, so increased shielding is needed where at the lower speeds, just twisted pairs were adequate. So what's this got to do with the VDI? Little, other than that they chose to use readily available cables that fit their need for 4 sets of conductors. The most stringent tech need was good performance of their digital audio streams, and it works. AFAIK, they have not changed the spec on the VDI interface, so there is really no driving need for the advanced Cat 6 & 7 LAN cable to carry it. Would it work - certainly. Dave -
I got a kick out of it. Knew the filter bot would strike... Right when I pushed Post...

Stupid filter 😄

It's the title of the novel that Blade Runner is based on, by Philip K lollipop, I think...

Typically if you send line level to FOH, they have to put a push the -20dB pad on the channel, assuming they have one... Dave

Lol, crusinon2! My take is there is no right or wrong, proper or improper in this. Only what works for you. Dave

Well, Helix owners are getting a massive discount on Helix Native, more analogous to your example?

Thinking maybe you have your headphone output set to monitor all (XLR, 1/4", and usb) and may be getting some phase differences between those sources. I use my XLR set at mic level and my 1/4" at line level with global eq only, so set my headphones only to monitor the flat XLR, and don't hear any phasing issues. Just a thought... Dave

I use the tweed blues with the gain at 1.9 or 2.0, channel volume at 7.0, and the stock 4x10 cab with either the 414, or 121 mic at 2.0 inches. I've tried other amp models and keep coming back to this one for my clean country sound... Dave

Ain't gonna happen on this hardware. If you want WiFi or Bluetooth, it's got to have the receiver and transmitter built in. It doesn't and no FW update can do anything about it. Dave

Okay, saved two of the fixed presets with model & tuning switched by snapshots to my PC, then loaded those 2 into my "test bench" set list to a couple of empty slots. Tried them and the JTV model switching and tuning parameters would not switch. I then went back to my regular set list and copied those 2 presets directly to the test bench without going through the Helix Editor, and they worked fine when tested. So, copying within the Helix is successful with all parameters, states, and functions intact, but the transfer out to the backup file on the PC or input back from the PC boogers the preset snapshot variax parameter changes. I'm guessing the bug may be in the Helix Editor transfer process, not saving the parameters right, or the file preset format is needing revision to include the correct data. Doing the 2.12 FW update, I saved and loaded using set lists (as I have with all the FW updates). In this test, I saved and loaded single presets, and it messed up either way, but only on presets with Variax snapshot switching. The other presets with one variax model and tuning not affected by snapshots all kept their proper settings. Dave
-
The update went smoothly, but I also saw the loss of Variax model assignments where I used snapshots to change models and tunings. On patches where I had a static model and tuning activate, it worked fine. Just the snapshot JTV model changes were messed up. I have only a few of those, and once I set them back up, and saved, they worked fine. I'm going to save one of those presets back to the pc and reload it into another slot to see if the new FW version of the preset comes back properly. If not, it's probably a bug that needs to be corrected. Dave

Did I get a Bad Guitar?
davidb7170 replied to robertallen's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I used 9's on my strat for years and would periodically break a string on a gig. When I got my Variax 300 about 12 years ago, it came with 10's and I changed them to 9's, as that was what I was used to. I would get maybe 3 or 4 gigs and break a string. I started changing them more often. I would buy the box of 10 sets, and once mistakenly bought 10's, so I used them, got used to them very quickly, and my string breakage dropped to nothing. By the time I got my 2 JTV's, I stuck with the 10's, and no problems. Now I change my strings when they go dull... I always have a spare JTV on my guitar stand, but (knock wood) have not had to use it due to a broken string... Dave
