  1. I put a set of noiseless DiMarzio "Area" series single coils in my 69S and they are quieter (hum & noise-wise) than many of my humbucker guitars.... Love them. The Fishman Fluence series does require battery power on both the single-coil and humbucker style form factors. On a traditional guitar, the powered pickups like EMG, and also the Fluence, usually entwine the power circuit into the whole circuit so that unplugging the 1/4" turns off the batteries. With the JTV's you would have trouble doing anything like that because of the complexity of the internals of the Variax. Also so much is crammed inside the JTV's, you'd have problems just trying to find space to place the battery(s?). Don't know if we've heard of any success stories with powered PU's on these guitars. Plus, batteries suck. I would not want a mod that I'd have to take my guitar apart in the middle of a show to change a dead battery.... No thanks.... Dave
  2. This is a problem with Windows 8.1 & probably 10 that I've run into one or two times. The os is over protective, and the software is not "signed" in its view.. I found it didn't install until I took admin control (on my pc that I built). It still asks for admin permission to start up the editor. Maddening... Dave
  3. I use the mags probably 90% of this time. I set my preset to per preset, then if I want the mags with the preset, I set it and save it with my JTV in mag mode (model knob light off) , and it recalls the preset with the mags on. For presets with the models on, I save the preset with the guitar model light lit, and it recalls the preset with the model I saved it with. When I want a mag & model is the same preset, I have to set up 2 paths with Variax model input on one and Variax mags on the other, and use the snapshots to switch between the 2 paths and mute the one I don't want. I have a few presets with acoustic models and mag electric so I can play rhythm on acoustic and a lead on electric. Pretty handy... Dave
  4. Just did the 2.11 update. No problems to report. Variax options work fine- I've always run it on per preset. Snapshots working. Sound is as I had it before. Dave
  5. I am waiting until after this weekend's gig to do the update, but have not experienced the Variax issues seen above. I have numerous presets with JTV models chosen that have worked fine since the 2.10 update that were migrated from 2.01 without issues. I did have the snapshot EXP 1/2 issue like everyone, and worked through it. Dave
  6. Ahh okay. I have found my fixed ones stay fixed, so... No worries then... Tried out the Archon lead at my gig, quick preset I put close to my 2205 mod preset, and switched to it during a song. Really liked it. I'm not a metal player, but it was very good in comparison, will probably mix it into my preferred presets. Also really like the Litigator for an edgy fender sound. Never specifically heard a Dumble, but if that's what one is, I like it.... Dave
  7. Hmmm, I gigged with mine last Saturday night, and have been using it quite a bit since doing the fixes to all my prior presets with snapshots. All my JTV presets switch as they should, no abnormal behavior so far. Will keep an eye out for problems, though. Dave
  8. Been hoping for Z adjustment for the VDI and Variax for quite some time, and understand the issue that the Variax signal through the VDI is digital, but also, this is a modeling system, so could it be modeled? Seems to me it's possible... Dave
  9. I probably do have it set that way in the global settings. You can set it that way temporarily, then back after you're done with them. Dave
  10. At least with mine, I found I could do the plug in/out for each snapshot, THEN save the preset and it was good. Was a bit of a pain, but I see it as a one time deal. All new presets have not had an issue with it. I copied one I fixed, and the copy was fine. I'll work through my "test bench" set list, then save my fixed set lists in my 2.10 backup - done. Dave
  11. Mine is good with the fix, rebooted a number of times since last night. It only happens with presets I reloaded from my 2.01 set lists that had snapshots made. Not with any new preset I made. Think this is how it slipped through beta testing... Dave
  12. Quick update -- tried just re-saving a pre-existing preset with snapshots I had reloaded from my 2.01 set lists, that didn't make any difference, had to do the workaround anyway. Well it was a good thought... Worked my way through all my gigging presets in my set list. Next up is my "test bench" set list, where I try out amps & settings. Played a little with Litigator -- cool, it's gots good bones... Dave
  13. hefonthefjords - Thanks for the workaround! I used my mission pedal, as I use my JTV's with the VDI. That works too. Don't have to save after each snapshot, it worked with a save when they were all set right. Still a pain, as I have most of my presets with active snapshots. Unadjusted snapshots didn't have the issue. Taking a break right now, but will try just saving the preset to see what happens... Good thought. Thanks folks! Dave
  14. Probably user error, but when I change a snapshot, the display above the expression pedal changes from EXP 1 EXP 2 to EXP 1 only and EXP 2 no longer works. I assign my volume control to EXP 2 on all my presets so when I'm tweaking settings with the Helix up off the floor I plug my mission EXP pedal into the EXP 2 jack. So far that is all I use it for, not out gigging. Is there a setting I need to make? So far haven't found one. If I reboot, the display and function is back to normal, until I change a snapshot. Thanks. Dave Quick p.s. when I change presets, it stays only EXP 1, have to reboot to get back to EXP 1 EXP 2.
  15. Looking forward to updating today! Good stuff. Hopefully the Variax HD Workbench moved up on the que for the next firmware update...
  16. I have found that sometimes when the pc has a usb problem, it will somehow mark that usb channel and device hooked to it and stop communicating with it. If I "uninstall" it with the Windows device manager, the pc will reinstall it, wiping the error log for it and start communicating again. Sometimes it may take a reboot for it to find it, but I've had success getting it going again. Something to try... Dave
  17. No battery that I'm aware of. They use EPROM memory of some sort to save the preset and other data as far as I know. The internal battery question came up when someone asked if a clock/time display could be added to the Helix. For that to happen, it would need an internal battery to keep the circuit going with power off, like the coin-sized ones inside a PC. None of the PODs had this, nor does the Helix, from the info from that request. Dave
  18. Most of the time, the audience doesn't know one sound from another (unless it's really bad), but at last night's gig I had 2 guys ask about my rig. I have the Helix and 2 JTV's, a 59 & a 69S. I pretty much gravitate to the 69S (long time Strat guy). One guy recognized the 69S and was wondering how I got such a good sound and where was my amp... The other asked what kind of guitar it was, and said "Line 6, like that amp Line 6?" Said he'd have to look into those. Made my night. I tend to use the mags 90% of the time (I put in DiMarzio noiseless SC'S) and love the quiet operation of them. The original pups sounded great except for the typical hum of SC'S. I use the models for acoustic and for alternative down tunings. No complaints here. I jump from mags to models all the time preset to preset, and snapshot to snapshot. Waiting for the implementation of hd work bench to be added through the Helix, can't come soon enough for me. It'll be in SOME update (c'mon guys!). The sound men we use love my sound and levels. I even out my presets so I don't blow anyone's heads off when I go from clean to overdrive... Dave
  19. I have the same issue when hooking up my Helix to my pc with USB. I built an isolation transformer to put between the 1/4" out of the Helix & the 1/4" input of my power amp. Yes sounds like a ground loop to me. The available isolation devices should take care of it - Isolating either part (USB or audio path) will help, and the most common ones are available like you say. Was not familiar with USB isolators, but that apparently did not pan out for you... Not specifically familiar with Hum X, but if it's made for audio with either 1/4" or XLR (or both) they work fine. My main desktop pc is on one electrical circuit, and my Helix & amp on the other side of the room on an outlet apparently from another circuit. I made my isolation transformer about 8 - 10 years ago, just a little thing in a project box... I use it whenever I hook up my Helix to the pc. Have not tried my laptop with the Helix, as I don't have the software on it. It's Win10, so I should try it just to see if I have any problems from that.... Dave
  20. Would love it if it would, but don't think it does last time I checked. Will take another look. I know it does with the guitar input for my non-Variax guitars so I can set up for those, preset by preset... Dave
  21. You're being logical -- Stop It :P Actually, IMO they have a production run of finished drilled necks in stock. Now if you order something different (not drilled, not finished this way or that), they have to change their procedure for that onesie or twosie, so is (in their minds) special handling, and they want to discourage it, because in a production line, it's a PITA.... Charge more - if it's important enough to the customer, they'll pay it.... Doubt they make each neck to order (whether they claim to or not) - they probably know how many of this or that kind of neck gets ordered and how many to keep in stock. When the onesie or twosie order comes in, upsets their apple cart.... Dave
  22. This has been going on for a couple weeks now, so don't think the cyber attacks last Friday had anything to do with it. The phone version of Chrome on my android doesn't have many options and I tried them all. My Chrome on the pc does work on this helix forum, though, so just specific to my phone, it seems.
  23. Giving up on Chrome browser on my phone. It's native browser works for the Helix forum. Chrome works on my pc, as well as IE, and IE and Edge on my Win 10 laptop, so dunno, tried clearing the Chrome cache and history on the phone, but no go... I try it periodically, but no change.
