Better is very subjective. They are different. Standard is a different and updated set of models and a different and updated Workbench HD application. So it will sound different. Whether one is better over the other would be more to do with your needs and what kind of sound you are looking for. Having a 300 and 700 electric, plus six JTV's myself, I like the sound of the older Variax and the JTV's for different reasons, depending on what it is I'm trying to do for a given song. The old and new are different, I like their sounds. Would hate to choose only one. --- And BTW, I'm a tech at Line 6 that services these.

" Strangely the encoder works perfectly, but maybe there is some contact issue on some pins inside " --- If it is skipping over some of the Models,... then yes, it is a failed encoder. And as far as contact cleaning goes,... ... something I prepared for the admin for such questions. Possible reasons,... -May need to re-install or update Flash memory. -Problem with the 3-Way switch or switch in the Model encoder assembly (would require a trip to a Line 6 authorized service center). -Not changing presets could be problem with the Model encoder contacts (would require a trip to a Line 6 authorized service center).

Is year of production important?

Hardware on a 59,... --Bridge adjustment set screws are a little longer to give more adjusting margin for broader intonation adjusting. That was two to three years ago. --JTV overall, no hardware changes since 2014 that I can think of. The usual ongoing periodic updates to Line 6 Monkey and Variax Flash program updates. -

Batteries for JTV

Coupe is pretty good. They know their stuff. -
Yes, and being made of wood, there will be some tolerances as wood expands and contracts with differences temperature and humidity in different places. Perfect example of how much it can change,... Stevic McKay of the Aussie band Twelve Foot Ninja, was in town with his prototype Shuriken and brought it to me for some electronic tweaks. The cavity cover was bowed, the fret edges were very sharp, there was overall shrinkage of the wood. It got back to normal after a few days, once Stevic got back home Down Under. So the specs can differ from location to location. Just so that you're all aware of what can be, when it it comes to dimensions of wood products.

1) Your local authorized service center should be able to handle that. https://line6.com/find/service_center/ There's a pull down sub menu for specifics (dealer, service, guitar service), choose the one in your area for guitar service for the one closest to you. I'm always available to them for queries should they want to pick my brain. Usually it's for something they already know and just want confirmation from me. They're pretty good. We wouldn't accept anything less. 2) I do electronics, and also trained in lutherie as well. Been getting paid do this in all things tech of audio/visual world, for some 45 years now when I first became crew member for the group Iron Butterfly (1975). Lots of time at this. 3) Set-up on these is not quite the same as a passive electronics guitar. Certain quirks to deal with, so it's best to have an authorized service center do it. Interactions between magnetics and piezos makes it touchy that way. -
1) So long as you stick to the 6k to 8k Ohm DCR spec pick-ups. 2) the pick-ups can accommodate a two wire configuration, as the the 5-Way switch is configured for two wire pick-ups. Can't think of any pick-ups off-hand that can accommodate that. Don't try to switch to JTV-69 5-Way switch to get around that, though the switch would accommodate five wire humbuckers, the connections in the UI harness downstream won't. 3) A lot of the above solutions seem like a lot of time and effort, so it would be more controllable to use Workbench HD, create it yourself, then save it as a custom patch to your computer.

Might have to tune it manually and then save it as a custom patch to your computer.

"Have you tried carefully applying contact cleaner to the connector pins in the battery box? " --- That won't work. 1) Chances are, it's probably the power management circuit in the battery box, glitch in the program or intermittent solder point, resulting in a false low signal to the main board. 2) The Korean 59 is an early serial number from 10 years ago and general servicing on it is long overdue,... the guitar version of a car's 50,000 mile tune-up. -
Yeah, fire is bad.

Use only the Line 6 Variax battery charger. We can't vouch for others. Log a Support ticket in your account, they will let you know your options. We usually,... usually have spares for occasions like this.

Be aware that modifications that affect product functions to Line 6 product may void any warranties, should it need servicing by Line 6. And though I would know how to deal with that, should it come across my repair bench, I would be limited in what I would be allowed to do regarding servicing of the product.
