Helix Floor with XLR out - trying to add external looper
rd2rk replied to mrmichaelgibson's topic in Helix
1/4" to XLR adapter? -
It helps us troubleshoot if you name the devices you're using, like what make/model amp? Instant Commands fire on Preset Load and on Snapshot Load. Channel 1 is the HXS BASE (default) MIDI Channel. When you change Presets HXS automatically sends a PC# matching the Preset MIDI # on the BASE Channel UNLESS in Global Settings>MIDI/Tempo you DISABLE "MIDI PC Tx". Your amp model is important because not all amps handle MIDI the same way. If you can set your amp to RECEIVE on Channel 2 and in Command Center set the Instant Commands to send on Channel 2 instead of BASE, that eliminates conflicts. Hope this helps.

Helix can“t receive MIDI CC in relative mode. Important upgrade function!!!!!

Wrong forum. Nobody from Line6 Monitors this forum. This is where you go if you're serious about suggestions for changes and improvements: https://line6.ideascale.com/a/index Before posting a new idea, please search to see if it's already been proposed. If 100 people vote on the same idea presented 20 different ways, it looks like only 5 people care about it! Also, post your ideas one at a time. I for one NEVER vote for multiple combined suggestions. -
If you'd rather use 2 snapshots than a single Stomp Mode FS, just save one SS with the Helix amp ON and the FX Loop OFF and save another the opposite way. No need to switch the physical amp to a clean channel, and if you don't turn the Helix amp OFF when the FX Loop is ON you'll have the Helix amp running through the physical preamp. Unless that's what you want?

OK, I've got no clue what you're talking about, way beyond my meager recording needs! I'm following in the hope that someone will know what you're talking about. Always happy to learn something new so, if you ever figure it out, please post back!

I use a Scarlett 18i20. The setting you're talking about is in the Scarlett's settings. What AI are you using?
-
Set the Helix amp Block and the FX Loop Block to the same FS and SAVE with one ON and the other OFF. That will toggle your physical preamp ON/OFF and the Helix amp OFF/ON.

I have the 100, no such problem. You know to change the BANKS manually you need to hold down the MANUAL button and turn the selector dial?
-
Oh, almost forgot. IIRC, Pro Tools First won't allow you to use 3rd Party Plugins. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think so. Screw Avid, get Reaper! Or Cakewalk! Or ANY DAW that won't try to screw you out of your children's inheritance.

You can't reamp through HXS using the USB reamp method (input 5) because you're using the 2i2 as your Audio Interface. In your HXS preset, split the path right after the Input Block and separate the Output Blocks. Record Path A with HXS amps/FX in your DAW on Input 1 using the L/Mono Output to the 2i2 Input 1. Record Path B without HXS amps/FX on input 2 using a TS cable from the HXS SEND to the 2i2 Input 2. This is your DI. Hurry and get the $69 Native offer. You'll now be able to PAINLESSLY reamp using the DI track to either Native OR Metallurgy. Attached is a sample preset. Wet+DI 2i2.hlx

You are correct. All paths are stereo. If the final blocks in both paths are stereo, then Path A Left will be combined with Path B Left, Path A RIght with Path B Right. The two paths in the illustration, being assigned to the MULTI output block type, would only have separate physical outputs IF one path were assigned to 1/4" (or digital) and the other assigned to XLR. The configuration in the illustration would send the same mixed stereo signal to all outputs.

Some of this has been implemented in recent updates. Press/Release/Hold is available for Looper and Snapshot commands (intra Helix). Keystrokes can be sent (Hotkeys). The ability to send multiple commands would be great, as would Press/Release/Hold for MIDI commands. I think that part of the reason that L6 doesn't go further with MIDI is that most guitarists blow a fuse trying to comprehend SIMPLE MIDI. Everything they add increases the workload for support.

Using jhs little black box with 4cable method with helix floor
rd2rk replied to Dominick9666's topic in Helix
In Global Settings>Ins/Outs: Send/Return 1 = INSTRUMENT Send/Return 2 = LINE 1/4" Outputs = LINE Volume Knob Controls = 1/4" (or 1/4"+XLR or MULTI) Signal flow: Guitar>Helix Input>Helix FX>Send 1 Block>Helix Send 1>Amp Input>Amp Send>Helix Return 2>Helix FX>Helix L/Mono Out>Amp Return In the Return Block, set MIX to 100%. Using a single FX Loop Block works fine if you're simply using FX in the Helix loop, but with an amp I find that it's less noisy using separate Send and Return Blocks. You don't need the Black Box, it's simply a line level attenuator. The Helix Volume knob should accomplish the same thing. If you think it does something different, try it in both the FX Loop and between the Helix Out and the Amp Return.- 1 reply

I assume that this is an issue because you're NOT using Helix as your Audio Interface. If you were, both audio and clock would be on USB. Helix receives external clock over MIDI or USB (Page 65 manual Rev F). In Global Settings>MIDI/Tempo set RECEIVE MIDI CLOCK to MIDI. Connect a MIDI cable and configure your DAW to send clock via MIDI. The point of the digital I/O is to eliminate AD/DA conversions when NOT using Helix as AI, as appears to be your situation.

A little help or visual layout for blind Helix LT user regarding layout.
rd2rk replied to HaltingState's topic in Helix
Is that different on the LT? Because on my Floor it's the first FX Block that's highlighted.- 8 replies

"LEARN", while not implemented in a consistent fashion, has been around for a long time. I don't see L6 making the effort to implement it though. There's a problem with NOTEs that's been around for ages. Who knows, though. They sometimes surprise us with small fixes and improvements that don't even get mentioned in the update notes.

So, the complexity of plugging a cable from MIDI IN to MIDI OUT? That two MIDI devices have to agree on which MIDI channel they're communicating on? The confusing concept that you use PC (Program Change) messages to change presets, and CC (Control Change) messages to control parameters (the knobs you mentioned) within presets? Yes, there's more to it, but not a lot. It's REALLY not rocket science, and none of that will change in MIDI 2.0. Again, I don't want to seem like I'm getting all up in your face about this. The Helix is a very powerful MIDI controller, and with power comes a level of complexity. With ANY technology. If you have ANY questions about using MIDI with Helix, feel free to ask them on this forum. I do MIDI, and I'm always happy to help!

Well, memory might be one thing you can blame on age - I sort of remember 1978... I was in California and... and...
-
MIDI 2.0 still doesn't eliminate the necessity for you, as the performer, to tweak all of those settings, it just makes them visible and tweakable in the same way that HX Edit or BTS does. There'll still be preset providers for them that hate tweaking and preset haters who'll tweak their hearts out!

A lot has happened since the 80's, and nobody here is claiming (nor did anyone EVER claim) that anything is going to replace a virtuoso on ANY instrument. Ever hear Jan Hammer? 80's synth virtuoso made VERY convincing guitar noises (including incorporating guitar TECHNIQUE) with a synth. Didn't replace guitar players. All of which is quite beside the point. We're talking about guitar TECHNOLOGY. I don't mean to get on your case, but I'm starting to think that I have no clue what YOU'RE talking about...
-
Simplest explanation: Global Settings>Ins/Outs>Return Type=RETURN Guitar>HXS L/Mono Input>HXS FX (OD, Dist, Mods)>FX Loop L Block>TS Cable from HXS Send (TS=L/Mono) to Amp Input (amp pre)> Amp FX Send>HXS L/Mono Return>HXS Time based FX (delay, reverb, Mods)>HXS L/Mono Out> Amp RETURN You probably don't want to use an HXS amp/preamp into a physical amp's preamp (unless you're using an HXS preamp as an AIAB), but you can toggle an HXS amp/preamp so that the signal bypasses the physical amp's preamp by assigning both the HXS amp and the FX Send L block to the same FS, saved with one ON and the other OFF. Whether or not you use a FULL HXS amp model or an HXS preamp in this second configuration is a matter of taste, no right or wrong there although the FULL amp model will be significantly louder than the preamp model.

I guess I don't get your point. Someday we'll all have chips implanted in our heads that can automatically configure any tech we encounter to any needs we happen to imagine. Helix will automatically create "the sound in our heads". No more messy menus and parameters to set. If you think programming presets in a guitar multifx is complicated, you've never looked at the manuals for any pro-grade synth. Analog synth patching was a piece of cake compared to programming a modern synth! Right now, you can play a guitar part and have it translated to MIDI, then play back the part using any instrument sound, SAMPLED for realism. No keyboard required. In the mix, you'd never guess the part was played on guitar. And the biggest limitation to playing those parts LIVE (which, IIRC, is what @DunedinDragondoes) is tracking (how quickly the synth translates the guitar signal into synthesized sound), a function of the actual chip tech that I mentioned previously. You're right, we're not discussing the instruments themselves. We're noting that modern guitar modeling and MIDI tech is coming closer and closer to eliminating the NEED for other instruments in any but the highest levels of performance in an acoustic environment (symphony orchestras, jazz in intimate settings, etc). And you're saying that guitar tech is behind the times?

FWIW - I'm 72 and it bugs the hell out of me when people use age as an excuse for - whatever. There are two main schools of thought in the guitar amps/fx world. ANALOG RULES! and Whatever sound best to YOU! The first group wants nothing to do with digital anything and considers MIDI to be the devil's work. The second group uses what sounds best and isn't afraid to try new things. The fact that you can still buy tube amps and analog pedals and can also buy a Helix and a Catalyst digital amp speaks to the fact that our industry caters to both groups. To summarize: The technology available to guitar players is IN NO WAY lagging. If anything, it's only restricted by the available digital tech (chips) available at a marketable price point, and the ability of users to incorporate the tech. Final thoughts: NOTE: The following is not directed at you! The more I hang out on forums the more I realize that there are many guitar players who try to embrace the digital world, but who really can't handle anything more technical than "connect wire A from output 1 to input 1". If using digital devices gives you agita, then use analog! No shame! Playing music should be FUN! Use what makes you happy and inspires you to PLAY! If a person is spending more time struggling to learn and configure their digital wonder boxes than they're spending PLAYING, they're doing it WRONG!

As above. I would add: If your cab is stereo, then use both Helix Outs to the amp, and both amp outs to the cab. If the cab is MONO, use only the Helix L/Mono Out to either one channel of the amp and one amp out to the cab (amp in stereo mode), or, if the speakers can handle it, you can bridge the amp. As to whether to use Helix preamps or full amp models, the preamps (IMO) sound best when using matching physical power amps. IOW - a Marshall Plexi preamp would sound best into the RETURN of an EL34 power amp; a Voxy preamp would be best into an EL84 amp. You're using essentially a "flat" PA type power amp, so the full amp models might sound best. Try it both ways and use what sounds best.
